Nothing about what we are seeing from this administration is mainline Christian. That’s why they don’t care what the Pope says. They don’t think the Pope is a real Christian.

All of this comes from an apocalyptic end times sect / cult of Christianity centered on ‘dominionism’.

I grew up in this cult and I can trace a straight line from it to all the worst things about our world today, not just in America (they’re also huge in East and SE Asia, Brazil, Australia..)

If you’ve ever seen an athlete or pop star or actor profess their faith and homophobic beliefs publicly and repeatedly it’s likely part of this:

It’s also tied inextricably to America in the way that Mormonism is (on different aspects): while the leaders are American, indisputably, there are a ton of global faith leaders in the same mold

Mainland Christianity has other issues! But this is the specific flavor I know most about.

Well, Petey’s pastor has a whole thing about what he believes about the end times

Compare that to this chart of different beliefs on the end times (eschatology)

https://www.desiringgod.org/interviews/an-evening-of-eschatology

I guessed, without even looking too deeply, that Petey’s pastor was a postmillenialist and I am correct. I can see it all of the statements even third hand

This link compares different positions and even thinks the postmillenialists are NOT fervent enough.. (but useful chart on key positions of theology)

An Evening of Eschatology

Eschatology is an important area of study, and if we keep the gospel central, God is honored when we press into his word to understand it.

Desiring God
@skinnylatte Eschatology sounds a bit rude to me.
@skinnylatte so they're going for a thousand year reich before the second coming? Original, at least.

@skinnylatte Thanks for sharing your perspective. The reason I cancelled my Washington Post subscription was that they got scooped on the story of Supreme Court justice Samuel Alito flying the Appeal to Heaven flag at his vacation home despite having a *multi-year lead* over other publications on this information.

Catholic justices on SCOTUS have aided and abetted the trend of a “Christian exception” over the course of numerous rulings to not only free Christians from compliance with laws the apply to everyone else, but enable Christians to impose their beliefs on those who don’t share them.

@skinnylatte As a mostly Italian-American, I was raised Catholic, although we weren't too devout about it, but it wasn't until around 2001 or so when I had to pivot my life from being a freelance writer to getting a day job in IT and had to work around these kinds of people that I realized I was an atheist, because their views are so toxic, vehement, and just utter nonsense that I knew whatever they believed was garbage. They're so very awful and dangerous.
@skinnylatte 'Our Christianity is the One True Christianity' is one of the core tenets of pretty much all flavours of Christianity, heh.

@sindarina @skinnylatte

Which is remarkable given that anyone who actually reads and listens to Jesus’ words ought to come away with a huge dose of humility and empathy rather than this kind of overweening arrogance. 😞

@skinnylatte wow, now I'm suddenly wondering if this is the Christian church my wife's ex colleague was into. They used to be best friends, but when my wife moved out of Singapore to be with me they lost all contact. We visited Singapore again some time later and all her other ex-colleagues said she'd been off the radar for years - so we paid her a surprise visit. It was a bit stilted and awkward. Not unfriendly, but they haven't spoken since.

@skinnylatte reminds me of the old consolidated track Dominion (mostly a cut of an in person conversation with the band and audience members)

@skinnylatte also apologies for the off topic.

This sounds like a wild way to grow up. Understanding the thoughts here behind the people is instructive

@skinnylatte I always think about this when watching the singing competition tv shows: the judges and many of the competitors make a big point of announcing their faith, every episode of every season. I have to assume the shows were either created originally for that purpose, or were quickly overtaken by that agenda.
@skinnylatte yes, I remember this getting some media attention when Australia's PM was into it (Morrison).

@skinnylatte

Yep, I grew up around these people, adjacent to, but thankfully not in their cult. Didn't know about the international reach, though.

@emc2 @skinnylatte Jeff Sharlet has written at some length about the international reach of this strain of Christianity. His book The Family was made into a Netflix documentary and in it you see the connection between American evangelicals and anti-LGBT legislation in African countries, for example.
@skinnylatte Also, the Pope is not the boss of a LOT of Christians. And the entire WASP element of the GOP (i.e. all of it) was easy to SUBVERT into Christian Nationalism because Protestantism was already its own special version of 'you didn't work hard enough and the Catholics are actually sinners" hell.

@skinnylatte

Christians like Trump have been the default version of Christianity during my lifetime.

I went to Episcopalian school and that denomination seems like nothing at much as straining to try to remain sane in the face of the Bible.

I hear people refer to Episcopalians as mainstream Christianity, but it's dying

@skinnylatte The real weird ones are the Catholics who think the Pope is not a real Christian and have split off into their own little thing, like CORAC.

My uncle is in their little weird cult, apparently got him kicked out of Opus Dei which is a great indicator, when even the dudes wearing cilices think the CORAC guys are fucking weird.

@Thatonepersonwithaface getting kicked out of Opus Dei?!!!??? They must be a whole jar of olives short of a pizza.

@skinnylatte A deep dive...this series was behind a paywall last I knew, but I just accessed it without my subscription to post the link.

Sean Feucht, Lance Wallnau, and the Seven Mountains

@skinnylatte Blimey, so they just zeroed in on this 'reference to the King James Bible's rendering of Genesis 1:28 in which God grants humanity "dominion" over the Earth.'?...

'And God blessed them, and God said unto them, "Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth."'

And a couple of mad passages from the likes of Revelations? All to pursue a political national christianism that is the antithesis of what Jesus actually taught? This is scarily stupid, but no doubt effective.

@skinnylatte Christianity started as an apocalyptic cult that has now lingered too long without its apocalypse.

(Comment for the thread audience, not trying to teach you something you already know)

@skinnylatte @lisamelton One of my neighbors is flying that tree flag.

@lisamelton @DarkAthena @skinnylatte

🤮

Would be a shame if something happened to their nice flag

Why Is Mike Johnson Flying a Christian Nationalist Flag Outside His Office?

A new report confirmed that the House speaker is displaying an “Appeal to Heaven” flag outside his door.

The New Republic
@skinnylatte
1. This is terrifying.
2. Fascinating how their project has so little to do with what the Jesus of the Gospels actually said.
@skinnylatte Every thing I see in the Administration I can ascribe to a combination of the type of ”Christianity” I grew up with, and the unrestrained privilege of someone who had never been effectively told no.

@skinnylatte

Oooh, I learnt a new term. I was brought up in the Kingdom Now strain of this ridiculousness, but in the UK.

It is all very, very insidious, stupid and awful. I am so glad I got out

@skinnylatte Christianity needs to be treated like the evil death cult that it is. You can also throw Judaism and Islam into that group. All three of the world's major monotheistic religions are death cults.

@skinnylatte thank you for educating people about this. It's vitally important to understanding where we are, and how we got here.

I spent a brief stint in some pseudo-Christian circles and then had to untether myself, so I could heal. I think, subconsciously, I might have been trying not to be gay, by being as religious as possible. I discovered firsthand how toxic that evangelical culture could be, and finally embraced my whole self. Didn't set foot in a church for 12 years, until some gay and trans people invited me to check out their faith community, where literally everyone was respected and welcomed.

Sorry, that was a lot about me. I think it is perhaps a story familiar to you. I see you. I hear you. And I understand your warning.

@skinnylatte It is especially sick that most of these Protestant sects emerged as rejections of theocratic governments that censored and jailed them for their beliefs. Many of these churches in the US held staunch anti-government positions until the 1970s, when Republicans began luring them in with promises to oppress women, gays, and Black people. It turned out their misogyny, homophobia, and racism were stronger than faith in their guiding principles. Separation of church and state is Baptist!
@skinnylatte I was lucky to be raised in a real Baptist church that had plenty of flaws, but we learned early that cops are not your friends, you should never make pledges to government, and no one should ever know who you vote for. My parents didn't even tell each other. By the time I graduated high school, the pastor died and was replaced by a homophobic bootlicker who craved power and hated people, just like every other corrupted Baptist.
@skinnylatte Well, they have some points of contact. Days ago, that same Pope asked mercy for pedo priests.

@skinnylatte
Sara Diamond wrote several books on this movement and others like it

@skinnylatte Says a lot about the state of humanity that anyone can believe any of this shite...
@skinnylatte I saw this sign once, last year, and have wondered since why I don’t see it more often
@skinnylatte Yup. Grew up in it too. They are 100% a cult. I call them the American Taliban. I also call them the Whore of Babylon (a Revelations reference) - because it seems to get under their skin a bit.
@skinnylatte either way, we need to get rid of christianity
@skinnylatte When I lived in the US south for a while almost 30 years ago, evangelical christians there already rejected Catholicism as un-Christian, so....

@skinnylatte Still, the utter rejection of biblical teachings by so-called "Christians" is still a bit shocking to behold. 🤷‍♂️

And their support for a literal anti-Christ figure in the name of (checks notes) Christianity is just insane. 🤦‍♂️

@skinnylatte

I realized it was a cult 60 years ago. Yes, I am old.
