Beyond that, we're beholden to nothing. Try to enclose a browser, fine, we'll all jump to a fork and you'll be left with a ghost town.

But in that migration, some more fundamental questions get stirred up. "Maybe browsers and the internet itself could be different, at a deeper level?" "Why do we tacitly accept the superstructure that's largely dictated to us by the likes of Google?"

Those are the questions that really excite me. That's where the real innovation happens.

One of the greatest strengths of OSS is that it can capture funding and resources from the business world, but it can't effectively be captured *by* the business world. Sure, it can be influenced by money, but there's a built-in regulatory mechanism from the freedom to fork, and one that voids all the typical MBA extraction and lock-in tactics.

Freedom to fork also caps the power of aspiring tiny tyrants like this new CEO.

I have long believed that OSS represents something that cannot be properly characterized in terms of the cold war era capitalist vs anticapitalist dichotomy. I've debated this with both business and leftie types.

The freedom to fork fundamentally changes what power dynamics are even possible. What you get from that and the downstream effects are something altogether beyond that dichotomy.

ITT: Thoughts, re Mozilla.

First, and most obviously, time for me to get off Firefox. Time to find out where everyone is going.

This coincides with another wave of reordering my digital life, to get off of YouTube, off the streaming model, and further eliminate ads from my daily life.

Sadly, it seems the time has come for Mozilla to die. I don't know much about this CEO, but it seems he fundamentally does not understand the domain he's in.

It is a little ominous that I cannot delete this PhD application. I can choose not to submit it, but I can't withdraw it. Apparently once you offer your soul, you can't back out.

Am I going to randomly have a bunch of physics professors show up and be all like..

"The application. You created it. We came."

"Who are you?"

"Explorers of the furthest reaches of education. Demons to some, angels to others..."

His warning takes on even greater urgency today.
"Thirteen House Republicans joined Democrats in advancing a bill that would reverse Pres. Donald Trumpโ€™s executive order to crack down harder on federal worker unions. The bill was led by Democratic Rep. Jared Golden of Maine, who forced a vote on the measure using a discharge petition":

Maybe itโ€™s just me, but Iโ€™d much rather have an entire Somali immigrant family with two happy trans kids living right next door to me than a white supremacist or a racist MAGA lunatic any day of the week.
We asked Indivisibles around the country what they want to see from Democrats in 2026: Nominate real fighters, secure stronger leadership, and demonstrate that the Democratic majorities of 2027 will not be held back by the 2025 status quo. https://indivisibleteam.medium.com/we-are-in-a-battle-against-fascism-we-need-fighters-not-folders-f1c02a5d2d1f
