#introduction I’m a retired aerospace engineer, worked on the #Orion / #Artemis program from beginning through the Artemis 2 mission launch, before that 18 years on the Space Shuttle, so I follow #space & #science topics. Also of interest #photography / #travel / #nature / #environment / #art / #geology / #gardening / #politics.

All photos I post - other than boosts of others - are my own © BigBang through 2026, Milian Kurten.

These are from a Nov 2022 trip to Big Bend National Park, #Texas.

@Trilobyter
Welcome and have fun😀
@Trilobyter I mourn that the Trilobytes are no longer with us... It's one of the extinctions I'm saddest over. #trilobyte #extinction
@sfierbaugh I know, right? I keep telling my spouse that if I ever get a tattoo it’s going to be some trilobite art but she insists my first tattoo must be her name across a butt cheek. So that’s our domestic standoff.

@Trilobyter

Awesome shots! Welcome aboard!

@Trilobyter Great shot! That's Santa Elena Canyon! I've been there!! Here is my field sketch from a BBNP trip in 2020. I think it's awesome how you can see the expression of the #fault that makes the escarpment, plus the same rocks are found at the base as the top, separated by a large normal fault.
@DrRocktagon nice! I studied GeoSci at UT Austin (BS ‘83) and did field work in TX, NM, & CO as part of that, plus a post-graduation stint supporting UT grad students as a field assistant in Chihuahua, Mexico. There my geo career ended (mid-80’s was not a good time, at least not with just a BS) and after knocking around Austin a few years picking up more classes I ended up working in the space program at JSC, 34 yrs & still at it, though also still eyeing outcrops & collecting rocks when I can.
@Trilobyter awesome. Once a geo, always a geo! That neck of the woods has some world class rocks
@Trilobyter Wow your photos are wonderful - powerful. I dont know how else to put it, there's no bullshit in them. Well done, sir. Glad to e-meet you and welcome to Mastodon!
@Trilobyter Welcome!
What is S/W?
@vik Thanks! Glad to be here. S/W = software.
@Trilobyter Oh, I see, thank you! Never read it with a slash so far :-)
Enjoy it here, it is a nice place!
@Trilobyter gorgeous pictures. Just out of curiosity, digital or film?
@marcominutoli Digital, taken with a Sony a7r ii. I transitioned to digital around 2005 after 30+ years of film, including the lab & darkroom work. I don’t miss the chemicals.
@Trilobyter Ironically, I just transitioned back to film. I killed my Nikon D80 with a firmware update. Dumb of me. As a computer scientist, I should know better. The final push was my last trip to my parents' where I stumbled on my negatives. My wife is kind enough to allow me to use our laundry room as darkroom. Sooo, I am enjoying the chemicals 😂.
@Trilobyter fascinating bio, geographically near my Texas heart. What’s a S/W engineer?
@srpitts S/W Engineer = software engineer. Really I do software systems engineering - requirements definition and model design for the Orion spacecraft simulation software.
@Trilobyter
Welcome! It’s a better space.
@Trilobyter Dig the pics! Do you always publish your photos in B&W?
@matt Thanks! I started long long ago doing only B&W film photography but now I shoot everything digital color. But I publish in both B&W and in color, it just depends on the photo & my feeling/mood at the moment. Sometimes I create both versions of a photo & have a difficult time deciding which I like best.
@Trilobyter Welcome aboard! I hope you find great friends and conversation, and thanks for the follow!
@pinkgoblin and thank you! I appreciate the welcome, am enjoying being on here so far.
@Trilobyter

Welcome to the Fediverse!

I hope you'll like it here! There's a great variety of platforms and interesting people here!

Enjoy the ride!

Great photos! Congrats!
@Trilobyter Welcome!! I look forward to seeing your photos!!

@Trilobyter

Oh my giddy aunt, I've never seen anything like that type of scenery, ever. Probably never will. Spectacular in black and white too. Neither #snowdoniamountains #wales, nor #scottishhighlands can compete.

@RhiMG I’ve traveled around England proper but sadly not yet to Wales or Scotland, but from what I’ve seen in photos & videos I think the scenery there holds its own against any other beautiful part of the world. And you have castles. But more than that, while you may hear some colorful expressions uttered by locals in the vast spaces of far west Texas, you will probably not hear any of them say “oh my giddy aunt”, so you’ve got that going for you😁.

@Trilobyter

I'm biased but #gowerpeninsula where I live is the jewel in the UK crown.

Late, but warm welcome @Trilobyter

Those photographies remind me instantly of Ansel Adams. Thanks for showing.

@Trilobyter

Already boosted & still deserving of mention, so—

have a look folks...

@Trilobyter I have a trilobite t-shirt like yours but labeled with name! Wore it yesterday. I’m always glad to see your posts.
