Hi everyone!

After a few years break from conventional social media, here to see if I enjoy this more.

I am a PhD student in cosmology. When not at my desk you can probably find me in the local climbing gym, cooking some vegan food, reading, playing boardgames or spending time outside doing more climbing, hiking, bike packing.

Might use this account for talking about science, hobbies or both.

Originally from Germany currently living in Denmark.

#introduction

I did not expect to come back from boardgame night to this! Over a hundred people interacting with this, was honestly expecting this post to go unnoticed! Thank you all so much, what an incredible welcome!
@alex_oe Hello and welcome! I'm glad you had a warm reception. ❤️

@alex_oe

Welcome to the last social media you will ever need. Welcome to Mastodon!

@alex_oe Hello Alexander! The beaches of Denmark are beautiful.

@alex_oe Hi Alex, welcome to mastodon! Hope you'll land here nicely, I think I have :) Looking forward to your shares.
@alex_oe welcome! I'm new here too and i swear it's like a breath of fresh air for now
@alex_oe have fun, I like it here, about 3 years now and have long ago dumped the FB and X etc.
@alex_oe welcome! You can follow both people and hashtags here, and you'll find your community soon enough.
@alex_oe Interested in stealing science and hearing about hobbies.

@alex_oe Greetings from Ireland.

A good start would be to follow @FediTips

First good tip: follow people you like. Check out what they boost. Follow the accounts you like from what they boost. Repeat.

@alex_oe Welcome from another (former) cosmologist, (former) climber, hiker, backpacker, etc. This is a good place.
@alex_oe Welcome! How nice to see your happy smile on what looks like a windy but beautiful day

@alex_oe hey welcome, you might have already realized this but in case you didn't, you need to follow people in order to see anything on your timeline! And since lots of people are scattered across many different servers, it might be difficult to expand your bubble past a certain point naturally

what I've started doing is occasionally picking a server at random from https://joinmastodon.org/servers and scrolling through to find interesting accounts to follow

Servers

Find where to sign up for the decentralized social network Mastodon.

@zrb @alex_oe I did the same thing. Also, I looked who interesting people were following and followed some of those accounts.
@alex_oe Kia Ora from Aotearoa New Zealand!🇳🇿
@alex_oe Welcome!
A helpful account to follow is @FediTips which offers lots of tips on how to use this platform.
- You can follow hashtags to increase the likelihood of posts with topic of interest showing up in your feed.
- You get 3 sets of feeds. Home: the accounts you follow. Trending: random popular posts from various instances. Live Feeds: Posts from accounts on the instance you belong to.
The system is a bit clunky between instances, but ask people for help -- someone will step up with advice.
@alex_oe Welcome! Look around and you're sure to find lots of interesting people and organizations to follow.
@alex_oe Welcome! I hope to also see you around in Cosmology world.
@alex_oe Herzlich Wilkommen

Welcome Alexander 👋

If you want help using this place please feel free to ask 🙂 There is also lots of help for new people on the website at https://fedi.tips

@alex_oe welcome Alex, and greetings from the other side of Øresund!
@alex_oe Welcome! The #boardgames hashtag is pretty great here.
@alex_oe welcome, Alexander. I hope you DO enjoy this more, it may be less contagious , but it's safer than algorithmania.
@alex_oe Welcome! I'm not as active on here as I am on some other social media, but I'm trying to get back into Mastodon.

@alex_oe Welcome. There is a good around the #boardgames hashtag. Plus plenty of outdoor posts on other hashtags like #SilentSunday (and others)

That’s the secret to discovery here. Follow hashtags.

@alex_oe tolles introduction-bild :D

heißt östreicher, kommst aus deutschland, bist in dänemark ... du driftest nordwärts apparently XD

@alex_oe Hi Alexander and welcome 🫶👋
The most important hint has already been given: Don‘t just follow people/profiles, but also hashtags - that‘s a huge difference to algo „social“ media through whoch you will not only see your favourite topics via hashtags in your timeline, but will also find people who are into the same topics.
And maybe add the hashtag #NeuHier or an English equivalent to your introduction which will make your intro go rounds here.
Have fun (and followed).

@alex_oe

Hello! You might find the #biketooter hastag worth a follow, and #bikenite, a weekly community Q&A around bikes hosted by @ascentale

@alex_oe it looks like a high frequented bike lane on the beach, judging on the tracks and the other bicycles in the background. Is this actually a thing in Denmark to ride on the beach?

@alex_oe
Hej!

If you need some timeline cleanse, the plushieverse is a good place to look (my following list should be a good place to start for that)... As well as the hashtags BloomScrolling, LichenSubscribe Mosstodon and probably a few more I missed

@alex_oe welcome here, hope you have a lovely time 💚

@alex_oe

Welcome! I’ve enjoyed my experience here very much — 3+ yrs. Hope you have fun here too.

@alex_oe Science is best left to the topic mailing lists. But there are many like me out here who are science-curious.

I caught a glimpse of information theory’s appearance in cosmology, and that perhaps, error correcting codes had a role in the determination of the six fundamental constants.

Cosmology needs a young voice explaining what it is and its relation to every-day stuff.

Watching MIT spin-off Commonwealth Energy. They’re close to making a workable tokamak reactor.

Welcome Alex.

@alex_oe nice to meet you! PhD students from my SDU department have board game afternoons basically every two weeks
