@cobalt123 Probably on the order of 20 years. Until recently it hung in the bathroom, because that's a place where one often has a time constraint (get to work, a meeting, etc.), isn't wearing a wristwatch, doesn't want to use a phone, and is not wearing glasses.
It has been replaced by a small back-lit digital clock that illuminates on noise, so a clap of the hands tells time. Personally, my watch claims it's waterproof, so I test that and wear it into the shower. ;)
@cobalt123 Ha. My rule would be "You have 25 minutes, after that, I'm popping the door lock and letting someone else in!"
I love deadlines. ;)
@mlanger ha, TWO wall clocks in your kitchen! The one over your sink is just like ours but yours is black! I don’t like digital clocks. Drew used to have a digital alarm clock that had a timer to start up his favorite radio station when the alarm went off.
I saw that as he became more confused at times due to Alzheimer ‘s that he could read the time but not know what that meant. If I put up the large analog clock he could say “7 (fifteen)” or “quarter after 7”easier he still knew what it meant. Now he can’t read a clock at all unless it is exactly at the full hour mark like “7 o’ clock.
I can see why most quick 30 point tests for dementia have the well-known part where someone has to draw a clock and put all the numbers on it. They also earn a point for having the big hand and the little hand correctly. I bet this test has to substitute a new question about time, perhaps 5 years or so from now. It won’t be so universal about analog clocks.
@cobalt123 Back when I had a 9-5 job, I had a clock radio. That was digital. But it was also in the 1980s.🤣
I had a real shock one day when I was in a supermarket and the girl packing bags at the register asked the cashier what time it was. The cashier pointed to the clock that was hanging on the wall right by us. It was an analog clock and the girl couldn't read it. She was a teenager; no apparent cognitive issues. Just never learned to read a clock.🤯
I have two analog clocks, one in the kitchen and the other on my desk. I use them more than I use digital clocks. I'm 73, and that means the analog clock is easier for me to read at a glance.
@dasparky Yes! I wonder if the youngest adults care very much that an analog clock is on the wall let alone it needs to be personalized with a certain style.
By the way, our conversations here remind me again that my Madtodon version doesn’t keep replies threaded. I think lots of people who have shared their photos and comments are possibly missed.
@PhoenixSerenity And this is the clock, that when your mother passes on, will be given to either you or your brother. I am voting that you get it.
When my grandparents died, all six grandchildren wanted either the antique wall-mounted “Grandfather” clock or the antique monumental table clock with carved dark wood and marble pillars. Doubt any young people would have anything like this.
We've got a "ship clock" on the wall. My husband's worked at sea for over 30 years and just had to get himself one. It's pretty and works.
@cobalt123 We have an analog clock in every room. I don't think we have a digital clock in the house, other than like built into another device where the clock isn't the main purpose...
Even my bedside alarm clock is the Timex that I have had forever. #Clock #Time #Analog .
Timex: Takes a licking and keeps on ticking!
Remember that? :) edit obviously you do :)
When I saw you said it had taken many lickings 😄
@paul
🤣🤣🤣
@paul @leadore LOve this clip! And saved it to share the next time my granddaughter texts me something surprising. LOL
AND, yes my parents finally bought me a watch as a gift since I would be going away to college.
It was “nice” to have“ my Timex but by that age I was eyeing the Bulova watches with the cobalt blue clock faces. Now that I think of it, since no one is likely to bestow a Bulova, maybe I could buy my own.
@paul @leadore As I definitely have strong #ADHD forces working on me I just spent an HOUR suddenly looking for a beautiful cobalt blue face watch I bought myself 4 years ago. Took me a long time and wow all the sorting I just did was desperately needed. But I was hyper focusing for too long. Aargh!
Finally found it and sharing my classic (to me) 2 watches and a mysterious object got time. Anyone know what that is? Heh. I knew window light was likely good to display my timepieces on. So I guess people can also “tell time” by the other things in that photo. Heh.

If you mean the little hour glass, it's an egg timer
I've never used one myself but I think they are one minute
@ai6yr @Nead Holy moly! Is it that all Russian clocks “go backwards???? I saw another person share their wall clock and I’d commented on it being a clock I ‘d never seen before. I would go crazy looking at yours. It tells me how ingrained my concept of time goes with the traditional clocks in the US.
And I love your barometer clock too. We keep 2 outdoors for in our dreadful heat waves and sudden monsoons in Arizona. It’s important portents for us.
@cobalt123 I spent a lot of tim, trying to find 24-hour watches and clocks... it's my thing.
The notes and signatures were to my dad who helped design and maintain the APS ring at Argonne. Next to it is one of his illustrations of the Tomak nuclear reactor he helped design during my early years.
They are both precious to me. :P
@dmoonfire I am thinking you had a very enriched childhood going by your adult interests. Maybe your parents had a very interesting social circle too. Fascinating!
My father also had an important role in the community I grew up in and part of the history for that area near Chicago. I retain many memories that most people would never think about.
The one in the living room stopped working, so I have it set to the Doomsday Clock time.
We have a working one in the bathroom.
I'm in my fourth quarter century.
