Coming soon in Mastodon 4.6 - a redesigned profile page. We've used community feedback and surveys to inform these updates. In our latest blog post, @imanijoy explains our design thinking and choices. Here are a few highlights 🧵

A Redesign for Profiles

Sharing the design thinking for the new look coming to profile pages.

Mastodon Blog
A new Activity tab has a dropdown menu for filtering different views of information (posts, boosts, replies) so you can find the information you're interested in.
We've reworked featured hashtags, pinned posts, and custom fields to make the most important details more easily discoverable, and make better use of vertical space.
Profile editing is now a unified experience, with everything in a single view. You can also now add alt text for profile and cover photos.

There's much more to discover! Read the blog post for more information, and let us know what you think.

These updates will start to appear on mastodon.social and other servers running nightly builds from today, and will be available to everyone in Mastodon 4.6, coming in a few weeks.

@Mastodon
@joseli

Sería una mejora poder descargar y cargar archivos .csv con las notas de perfil.

@Mastodon Could you please allow users to post images and videos in quotes? (this is possible on other social media platforms)
@Gamrok @Mastodon I would definitely appreciate this as well :)
@jeremyjackson @Gamrok @Mastodon thank you, and we're certainly taking this into consideration. 😎

@imanijoy same for polls, please! I've seen others doing this already (with Mastodon, not other softwares), but probably they used a certain Mastodon app to do this.

@jeremyjackson @Gamrok @Mastodon

@imanijoy

Good to hear! I have been noticing the lack of this feature more and more so here's hoping...! 🤞

@jeremyjackson @Gamrok @Mastodon

@Mastodon crucial Fedi question: do we know if Bowie creates #BonkWave #music or not?
@Mastodon
When do we get search that works?
@RealGene @Mastodon In what way does the search not work for you?
@Gargron @Mastodon
I try to search for things I know I've seen, and get incorrect results. Search syntax, like from:me is completely inconsistent and has obvious gaps.

@RealGene @Gargron @Mastodon

if the post was from another instance, depending upon your server's retention policy, it may "forget" older posts

you can't search posts that aren't public

and people may change their settings to make their posts unsearchable

i found that search only returns the first few posts. at which point it's helpful to take the last returned post, get the date on it, and search again adding the search term "before:2024-04-25" for example to get the next page of results

I can't use mastodon as my primary social media yet because the ui and ux are still not Facebooky enough to entice my family and friends over from facebook.
@kayrah87 this has been on my mind as well – in fact, I addressed in in my talk last week at FOSS Backstage design. I'd love to hear your thoughts in more detail sometime.

@imanijoy @kayrah87

I find the tiny space we're allocated on the left side to write posts and replies very off putting. It's too small and feels strange having to focus on the side of my screen instead of the centre. I find myself leaning to the left when I'm writing to correct for that, which isn't comfortable. Would prefer something in the middle and also inline when replying to others.

Thanks, J.

@mackaj @imanijoy @kayrah87 If you need something more Facebooky, you could also take a look at Friendica. You can interact with Mastodon from there too.

@gunchleoc @imanijoy @kayrah87

It's a little niggle and I like Mastodon otherwise, including the instance I'm on (I have a small monthly DD donation running to support it). I'd be very reluctant to start over somewhere else.

@mackaj My post was about @kayrah87 's friends who would be moving here from Facebook.

@Mastodon you are aiming at lower tech users and are adding the local server regardless of whether it's the one of the viewer.

1 - how does this impact the user experience if they browse a post and try to boost it? or follow while viewing on a server not their own?
2 - it might be good in the tool tip to call out iff the server matches that of the user and say "this person's posts will show up in your local feed". (I'm not sure how to phrase it to be clear and not clutter, but that matters)

@draNgNon @Mastodon
For 1: If you try to interact with a user while you are not on your home instance's page, the website will prompt you to insert your username@domain, in order to redirect you back home (img related).

For the second point.. people tend to know their own instance, right?

@crittero
re 2) The techy ones, yes. For not so techy ones I’ve seen a story or two in recent months of users believing that all Mastodon instances are run by the Mastodon company with the domains being some kind of gimmick – somewhat understandable when you’re used to corpo media platforms and particularily also to BlueSky, where that’s actually pretty acurate. (At least that’s were we suspected it might come from in the comments.)

So they’ll probably know the full handle, but not necessarily be aware of what it means.
@draNgNon @Mastodon

@curiousicae exactly. if people knew their own instance they wouldn't need to have changed how the handles are in the profile display
@crittero @Mastodon

@Mastodon
Add a ‚CV‘ tab with the option to share updates in post format and we can finally get rid of LinkedIn. 🙂

Great improvements. Thank you for your work.

@Mastodon could use some colour instead of all white... not sure what's the point of paying for a color screen to see a black and white UI.

@Mastodon "You can also now add alt text for profile and cover photos."

YESSSSS!!!

@hwll @Mastodon Already done. 🤩
@katzentratschen @Mastodon one of the advantages of being on the flagship instance I guess
@hwll @Mastodon Indeed. You get some glimpses of design tests, too. Including bugs. 🤪
@hwll @Mastodon I can? Maybe after my server updates the software....?
@Mastodon ах да, one more thing, та самая фича, которую вы у себя убрали, не так ли?
@liilliil @Mastodon Instances can choose to enable or disaple their federated feed.
@crittero Mastodon GmbH has chosen to disable them but continues to show those that are enabled
@Mastodon awesome, this means a lot to many people here!
@Mastodon Is this survey prompted automatically or can i opt to take it voluntarily?
@Mastodon What happens when text in custom fields is sentence-long? In today’s listed view, it is readable without hovering. This new compact design seems to only allow a couple characters.

@frumble fields take a whole line if they have to, and get compacted if they have enough room to do so

if a profile field is long enough to not fit in a line, an ellipsis button is shown and clicking it opens a modal with multi-line text

here is how your profile looks on mastodon.social

@ClearlyClaire @frumble On my iPhone the sentence cuts off at "spiegeln ausnahm […]". That's not very mobile-friendly and not how I'd expect a PWA to handle different screen sizes and resolutions. Some other design choices look as if they were made just for desktop browsers, too.
@katzentratschen @frumble do you have a screenshot? This would have happened on the previous version as well, wouldn't it? At least now you can have a modal that shows the full version!
@ClearlyClaire @frumble "Modal" refers to the "[…]" button that opens an overlay with the whole line? Cutting off lines did happen before, yes. But I don't think a modal is an improvement. Lots of clicking/tapping.
@katzentratschen @frumble yes, i was referring to that; right, it's a click, but before that, the sentence simply wasn't available to be shown fully; it doesn't cut off earlier than it did, it just allows you to see it in a more convenient way when it does
@ClearlyClaire @frumble It's definitely an improvement. Just not the one I was hoping for. Thanks for your reply!

@katzentratschen @ClearlyClaire @frumble

@katzentratschen On the contrary! It was designed mobile-first, but factoring in the importance of other page content as well. For visible content in paragraph form, we encourage the use of the bio itself.

Thank you for your feedback!

@imanijoy @ClearlyClaire @frumble Thanks for your reply. I don't use this section in my own profile, but I've seen a lot of accounts getting quite creative with its headings and content. I'm not sure if they'll appreciate to use the bio section instead. It's similar to the discussion about pinned posts in a carousel. (Personally, I usually scroll to recent posts without reading bios or pinned posts.)
@katzentratschen @ClearlyClaire @frumble that's completely understandable. We're a small team maintaining a software that must work for millions, which means we're entrusting the community to be understanding of some compromises here and there. We appreciate it!

@Mastodon

i have a pinned post that doesn't show up anymore

i tried pinning it/ unpinning it again: nope

i tried pinning and unpinning others posts: fine

it still shows up on the mobile app as pinned, but not the web

@benroyce At the bottom of the pinned post on your profile is a very easy to miss "View all pinned posts" button (I can see your "Don't be a sucker" post there). It confused me too! @Mastodon

@Cheeseness @Mastodon

no it's not that

i have indeed tried that as well

i'm going to mull it over, think if i forgot anything stupid (which while not what you have indicated, it's possible i missed something else obvious) then potentially file a bug report

@benroyce Ah, sorry for assuming (I had a moment today where I couldn't find my own pinned posts because I'd missed that button). Hope you get to the bottom of what you've encountered! @Mastodon

@Cheeseness @Mastodon

it's very strange. it's something about this one particular post. because it's a reply? because it has embedded video?

it's public, i checked that

i'll puzzle over it

@benroyce I just tried pinning my reply here to my profile and it hasn't shown up. That might be it @Mastodon

@Cheeseness @Mastodon

interesting

i did do some tests like:

find another post of mine with embedded video: pins fine

find another post that was a reply i made (EDIT: to my own post, perhaps an excluding criteria): pins fine

but if you are having flakiness too in this domain there could be something to it

@Cheeseness @Mastodon

followup:

you got it!

i pinned the comment above and it does not show up on the new web ui profile (but does show up on the mobile app)

i'm going to file a bug report and reference this thread

maybe the criteria is a reply nested deep/ a reply to someone else

@benroyce Interestingly, if I have a column for my profile open, I'll see the new pin immediately when I make it. If I then view something else and then re-open my profile, it won't be visible anymore (the show replies toggle doesn't seem to affect this behaviour). Also on the web app (don't have a mobile device to check the mobile app with) @Mastodon

@Cheeseness @Mastodon

so this post of yours is the one i'm linking in the bug report, since you have further info on behavior/ conditions 😁
