My first reaction to DLSS5 can be summarized as “🤮”. So now this completely discards artistic intent, and replaces all game characters with fake instagram influencers?

Is it just me?

NVIDIA DLSS 5 Delivers AI-Powered Breakthrough In Visual Fidelity For Games

NVIDIA DLSS 5 infuses pixels with photorealistic lighting and materials to bridge the gap between rendering and reality.

NVIDIA
@aras Can you detect if DLSS is turned on(overridden to be on basically)? I really want to do this and replace my models with clowns when it is detected.
@aras I’m watching a whole discord channel of players reacting the same right now, not just you
@aras next step is just shipping the default cube and the AI will make the game that billioners think people should play... or a break through in technology, how nvidea would phrase it.
@aras not just you
feels more like a party trick than serious technology to me. I certainly wouldn't use this
@logicalerror @aras Ewww! I had to check it wasn't April 1st yet!!! 🤮🤮🤮
@aras it's horrible. i hate it so much.
@aras I don't have words for this. Why would anyone think this is a good idea?
@aras more like visual infidelity
@aras not just you. Realtime yassification isn't something I ever wanted.

@aras Leon with that AI lighting looks like a protagonist gazing the moonlight in some romantic movie.

Art directors must be having some fun time right now.

@aras it needs more fingers 😆 damn thats ugly
@aras also, this has nothing to do with super sampling, it's making stuff up. Next stop: porn and lawsuits.
@aras Wow. It looks amazing ... ... ly ugly.

@aras I just realized what this reminds me of: My old crappy Casio digital camera, which had a non-optional "denoiser" (probably also "AI" based) that smoothed away a lot of details and re-added stuff that wasn't there.

Even with all filters off, everyone looked like they were wearing makeup. I hated that thing (but couldn't afford to buy another camera back then).

@aras Companies just won't stop filling this timeline with gazillions of AI-enabled things nobody needs.

Make it stop.

@aras At some point we can just forget about making models, animations, whatever, and ship low-poly soups because some AI shit will do whatever the hell it wants with the pixels, AI-"enhancing" them anyway.

@molecularmusing @aras This is how VR worked in Lukyanenko's Labirynth trilogy. The first novel was released in 1997, and the setting was era-appropriate, so you had 486 or maybe Pentiums, software rendering, and modems. There was a plot point about needing to stay "inside" for 15 minutes or so, while hunted, because 3 MB of data had to be downloaded.

The VR in the books worked by drawing crude shapes on the screen, while you were in a psychedelic trance that made you see them as a real world.

@molecularmusing @aras that would work perfectly with ai generated low poly models and textures right? Get ai to do all the work and creativity, that's what they're aiming for.
@molecularmusing Make everything out of cubes with text labels on them for prompts. >_<
@aras it's not just you, this is a fucking disgrace

@aras It's fucking absurd. Temporal AA/dyn res is already, let's just say, not uncontroversial, but DLSS "classic" is certainly a state-of-the-art impl of that idea. I'm fine with that. (Temporal artifacts are always bugging me, but sigh, such is life I guess?)

Frame generation was already jumping the shark - making up fake frames while doing nothing about latency (and in fact usually making it worse), no thanks.

This is just... no words.

@aras it's not just changing the entire lighting to be higher contrast, deciding "oh it looks like there's fog/haze and puddles of rain in there, let me clean that up for you" (look at what it did in the background!!), it's also _completely_ changing the face and even skin tone

I mean, seriously, WTF

@rygorous @aras yeah not even the general direction from which faces are illuminated remains (hogwards legacy cart, wtf); not to mention that a broody character with sunken, dark-ringed eyes isn't supposed to look like an Hugo Boss perfume ad)
@funkylab @aras or the RE Requiem shot where it goes "oh this needs an ultra-bright white key light for sure" completely changing the mood
@funkylab @aras or the Starfield one where it goes "moody dank looking spaceship? Nah, imma turn that into the HDR photo furniture catalog version"
@funkylab @aras the girl in the first RE Requiem shot, of course, "time to age her up maybe 7 years, give her filler injections and contour makeup" just... 🤮
@rygorous @aras I have *so* many thoughts on the implicit (and probably pretty explicit) human biases that lead to that transformation. Surely, nobody would write a female character for a game that doesn't look canonically sexually attractive to the male core audience, right.
@rygorous @aras oh, and looks so *in every situation*. Not that I don't know, RE might be an environment where most characters might not be having the best day of their lives.
@rygorous @aras clearly, the only reason you'd want to light a scene in the rain on a dirty street in the evening is to highlight the finer details of the strands of hairs, in a "hyperrealism" style that rivals a makeup youtuber's ring light close-ups in harshness.
Seriously, in the original, the *natrium vapor street lights are on*.

@funkylab @aras I mean this one

like WTF, that's a _completely_ different lighting setup

(also a different face that looks like they recast the role for a Hollywood remake, as in all those shots...)

@aras Imagine running this on a Mario or Zelda game...
@aras This is clearly garbage, driven by the worst techbro impulses.
@TomF @aras this gives me a headache. Also wow. NODBODY wants this.
@Feral_3D @TomF @aras lol it just runs roop
@aras 4000 euro yassify filter! 🙃
@aras Very telling the companies who volunteered to be the examples for this tech are some of the most greedy in the industry right now.
@aras this looks like ass.
@aras huh, are all the characters going to look directly at the camera each time they are facing it? Talk about fourth wall breaking... Also yuk 🤮
@aras Amazing round of bullshit bingo. I was relieved to be spared images by the wall of marketing bull.
@aras I love it how it deforms that "CIGARETTES LOTTO" sign at the top left. 👌👌👌👌 THAT's the AI we all come to love and expect!

@ggn @aras I think that and the different atmospherics might be because they recorded from different runs that randomized environment/atmospherics differently? It seems unlikely it would get rid of all the fog and the people with umbrellas and get the perfect background without them

although it's definitely trying to get rid of fog/haze and shadows in _every_ shot they show, and just adding whole extra key lights for the heck of it

@rygorous @aras Maybe so, but I still find it very funny! Like all those faux PS1 style modern games that semi-randomly deform the polygons as you walk, now a feature in AAA games!
@aras it’s an abomination nobody needs
Why aren't actors ugly anymore?

YouTube
@aras I'm glad they choice Resident Evil for this demo...
It shows how their "breakthrough" completely destroys the mood of the game. It's such a "make stuff generic" thing. Or "prettier according to the default western standards"
And also removed the iconic Umbrella Corp umbrellas to be generic...
And my god this is terrible.
@aras total garbage, it changes the environment and lighting as well as character faces. I wonder if the face is even consistent from one scene to the next, or if two similar enough characters will be blended to the same bland generic face
@aras Came here to rant about the same thing. Just got off my second playthrough of Resident Evil Requiem, too -- just to find this crap on Nvidia's page.
It's completely dumbfounding. How could the entire chain of command sign off on this? (That's a rhetorical question. I know how, but still) 😭 🫠
@aras Definitely not just you. I find this to be pretty uncanny. And I also see the main problem in overriding artists' intent.
@aras The idea that they would label this as "DLSS 5" and not some separate thing feels like a form of branding malpractice on-par with discarding "Office" in favor of "Copilot"
@tojiro @aras the icing on the cake is that in some games the nvidia control panel will automatically override graphics settings on each game start (currently seeing this in Cyberpunk 2077) - e.g. switch off DLSS and it will be enabled again on next game start. At first I thought it's a bug in CP2077, but it's actually a 'feature' of the nvidia software which needs to be manually disabled.
@aras I had seen this preview image on a few posts and I thought it was a joke, like the "hire fans" thing that "fixed" Aloy in HZD. I did not realize it was the actual NVIDIA promo. Wow this looks atrocious, literally like self-parody, I cannot believe they're bragging about this.
@glyph @aras I think that's my favourite thing about this fiasco: How they just walked into the room to brag about this, as if not a single person had told them it looks like garbage.
@aras I for one am very excited for the renaissance of stylized 2D games that this going to trigger. Photorealism has never been something to strive for, and 3D is just one D too much anyway.
@sschoener @aras given re-stylising 2D animation is already entirely possible and I don't think I've seen a single meaningful use of that (other than upscaling some low-res anime!) I don't have the same excitement :(
@mdiluz @aras well, if re-styling in 2D has no "single meaningful use", then we're safe, right? :)

@sschoener @aras honestly fair call out, the strength of what I wrote is way more than what I felt!

The feeling there is more that I've been unconvinced style transfer is going to produce much interesting art, given it exists elsewhere and has seen quite limited use.
