People in meetings are always telling you that they are “conscious of time” as if that makes them special.

I’m conscious of time *and* space *and* smells, mate, but I don’t go on about it, and you should consider yourself lucky about that last one.

A lot of people speak by just assembling clichés, and I suppose it’s normal, but once you notice it, it can start to make your brain itch. A staff member in Tesco earlier noting that people “do utilise the baby changing area”.

It’s genuinely one of the best things about The Big Lebowski, though, how he picks up phrases and uses them, sometimes inappropriately.

@Nickiquote Well, that’s just like your opinion, Man.
@Nickiquote I like the “In this meeting there are no bad ideas”.
@Nickiquote
My workplace is inundated with “let’s take that offline” and “this needs to be socialized”. I would love some ado shenanigans.
@sollat If the latter one isn’t about a puppy, I don’t know what it means. Discussed with others?
@Nickiquote
Honestly, I barely know. I take it as “must be discussed ad nauseam with as many people who will have conflicting opinions as possible”. If that isn’t the intent, it’s definitely the result.
@Nickiquote I think technically there might be some difference between the meanings of “use” and “utilise” but even if there is I think we should bin or, if you like, deutilise, the latter.
@Nickiquote everyone speaking like an LLM eh. Can you imagine in the future, everyone speaking like a short form video?No gaps ever and every sentence is a question?That could really annoying?Really fast?
Doctor Who

YouTube
@only_ohm Does Christopher Eccleston walk a bit strangely? Have I only just noticed this?
@Nickiquote The shoulder sway? I found some footage of him walking in private life and he wasn't doing it, so I guess it's his Doctor walk.

@only_ohm @Nickiquote

he's my fav Dr. Who

i was so disappointed when he just had one season

@samiamsam @Nickiquote

I watched some classic Who - bits of 3 through 7 - in the 80s and 90s. 9 became my favourite about the moment of this speech, and remained so until 10 started bantering with the Sycorax leader in The Christmas Invasion. #DoctorWho

@Nickiquote See, I'm time blind (basically now* and not now is my grasp of time) but I don't feel the need to waste time by pointing out that "I'm not conscious of time."
Mind you, often the comment is made by someone who has gone on for so long that we all collectively stopped listening not now long ago!
*Now as in this instant as opposed to any short duration.

I may not be conscious of time but I am conscious that I'm rambling and have been for some considerable period of time (possibly measured in decades).

@Nickiquote and starting meetings saying "without further ado"

Why are you talking like that? You are a middle manager from New Jersey not a Victorian theatrical impresario

@blueorangeblue I’ve noticed that sometimes people adopt a kind of ironic Victorian speak. In particular one boss I had was always misusing the term “my erstwhile colleagues” for people who are current colleagues, and it hurt my brain not to correct him.

@blueorangeblue @Nickiquote worse: without further adieu.

It makes my teeth hurt.

@greem @blueorangeblue @Nickiquote oh no. I'd never encountered that one before. Thanks for adding yet another example to make me cringe when I hear it.
@greem @blueorangeblue @Nickiquote "Just fucking leave, then."
@greem @blueorangeblue @Nickiquote Even better: "I hate long goodbyes too" and walk out yourself.

@blueorangeblue @Nickiquote though for a while I was watching a gaming youtube who completed that phrase

"without further ado, let's do further"

@patterfloof @Nickiquote that's quite witty
@blueorangeblue @Nickiquote I don't remember their account, but that really became a catchphrase
@blueorangeblue @Nickiquote replying to "without further ado" with "omg you are absolutely right boss we really should cut the bullshit already" 🤌

@vrtxd @Nickiquote

"Yes, and if no one has any objections to recording this meeting, please put your hands together for Bob from finance with Cuddles the Monkey performing amazing feats of ventriloquism!"

@blueorangeblue @Nickiquote

"Without further ado" is the most ado phrase that has ever ado'd.

@Rhodium103 @blueorangeblue @Nickiquote I like to use the phrase "without further ado or adon't." Hoping it'll catch on. 🤞
@Nickiquote I might try out "conscious of space" in a non-astrophysics meeting and see where it gets me.
@Nickiquote
In meetings I’m barely even conscious at all 🤷
