🧠⏳
ADHD + time = chaotic neutral energy.

I used to rely on Google + Nest to tell me when life was happening. It worked… almost too well.

Then I started self-hosting and had to rebuild that “time awareness” magic myself.

This Home Assistant automation finally fixed it:

ADHD Time Chaos? This Home Assistant Automation Finally Solved My Schedule Problems

ADHD time blindness is real. Here’s how I use Home Assistant and Alexa to automate reminders and stay (almost) on time.

🌀
The problem wasn’t planning.

It was feeling time pass.

2:30 PM means nothing to my brain.
“15 minutes until Project Sync” = actionable.

So I built countdown announcements at:

• ⏰ 1 hour
• ⏰ 30 minutes
• ⏰ 15 minutes
• ⏰ 5 minutes

🛠️
I ditched Google Calendar and synced Fastmail into Home Assistant using a published ICS link (Remote Calendar).

✔️ Read-only
✔️ No stored credentials
✔️ Standards-based

Plot twist: Zenarmor blocked the domain at first.
Security tools love a dramatic entrance.

🧮➡️🗣️
The automation converts absolute time → relative time.

Not: “Event at 2:30 PM.”
But: “Hey, you’ve got 15 minutes until Project Sync.”

That shift removes so much cognitive load it’s ridiculous.

🌙🚫
It only fires between 7 AM and 9 PM.

Because nobody deserves:
“YOU HAVE 1 HOUR UNTIL DENTIST”
at 3:12 AM.

We are building support systems. Not jump scares.

🏠📣📱
If I’m home → Alexa announces it.
Always → I get a phone notification (self-hosted ntfy).

Infrastructure handles awareness.
My brain handles action.

That division of labor? Elite.

🧠⚙️
This didn’t make me magically punctual.

It removed the background anxiety of constantly tracking time in my head.

Less mental math.
Less “wait what time is it?”
Less shame spiral.

More creative bandwidth.

You don’t need more discipline.

You need better scaffolding.

Automation isn’t laziness.
It’s assistive engineering for how your brain actually works.

If you’ve built a reminder, routine, or automation that actually supports your brain instead of punishing it — drop it below.

Time blindness doesn’t win.

We just out-engineer it. 🧠⚙️
