I don't think it's supposed to do that...
@catsalad I'm compelled to say "oooo big stretch"

@catsalad

Is that a repair or what the device actually looks like? 😲

@catsalad additional surface area for cooling on this hot day. Smart!

@catsalad

One seldom sees such a fine example of mozzarella solder these days. It's almost a lost art.

@passenger @catsalad came here to say that. Not the mozzarella bit, the art bit
@catsalad hm reading the alt text I'm not sure if you know the story of this pic?

@littlefox @catsalad

I don't know the story but I'm guessing this is a hardware debugging setup. If you have more i might be curious

@RnDanger @catsalad kinda - it's a PlayStation and it's being hacked :3
@littlefox what were they doing with it?

@catsalad that’s a heck of a cheese pull
@catsalad It became sentient and is now trying to consume its owner, take over their identity.
@catsalad that's not exactly a "surface mounted device"...

@catsalad

I've seen some wild shit in my time but... wow.

@catsalad
"OK, so we've identified your speedpath issue, but you're not gonna like it."
@catsalad I think you have some sort of issues with temperature rising in wrong places. 🧐
@catsalad That's a lot of solder.
@catsalad maybe not, but it's beautiful!
@catsalad Oh wow, how did THAT happen? 😲
@catsalad *whisper* The forbidden cotton candy.
@catsalad The most important question is: Is it still working? Looks like a piece of art.

@catsalad I don't think that's "overheated and pulled off".

That looks like very deliberate and painstaking rework soldering hundreds of individual wires from PCB to chip and tapping a few off to that ribbon cable.

@catsalad (if it was me doing this I'd have made an interposer flex PCB which adds a bit of lead time but has better signal integrity and avoids fragile spaghetti like this)
@azonenberg @catsalad yeah, it's a famous photo from a playstation homebrow wiki of someone reverse-engineering the syscon (system controller) on that board (iirc)
@catsalad mmm, lead free solder in a ps2
@catsalad I'm not even mad, I'm just impressed. This is peak bodge wire.
@catsalad That... makes me strangely uncomfortable. Also. Mimic?
@catsalad that's a mimic

@eniko @catsalad And it's yawning.

And now you're yawning.

@catsalad ...does it still work?
@catsalad and they say computers don't make art.
@catsalad It does look very cool!
@catsalad how to make your L3 cache performance go literally sideways

@catsalad

When I need to compute my bits 90 degrees out of phase

@catsalad ...and that's why we use anti-viral protection, kids.
@catsalad also ... Grey Waffle, anyone?
@catsalad When you need convection cooling but can't mount the board vertically?
