Windows 12 is due to come out this year.

1) Your computer does not meet the system requirements. Again.

Why?

Your PC will need a dedicated NPU — a specialized processor designed to handle AI tasks. So, if you recently bought a new PC just to use Windows 11, Microsoft wants you to go shopping again.

2) It will finally, unfortunately, introduce a subscription model.

That's right — you read that correctly. They want you to pay and keep paying to use the computer you just bought. Technically, you won’t own your computer while Windows is installed.

NOW is the time to try Linux. Stop waiting. Don’t make excuses. Don’t even complain — we all knew this day was coming. Either try Linux, or admit you’re Microsoft’s little bitch.

Source? Yes, this is real.

Windows 12 Reportedly Set for Release This Year as a Fully Modular, Subscription-Based, AI-Focused OS

Reports suggest that Microsoft may be gearing up to launch Windows 12 this year, which will be a modular and AI-focused OS.

@NetscapeNavigator
Who wrote the code? I understand SCOTUS says AI work cannot be copyrighted!.
However, if AI is fully embedded, nothing I do on the machine is copyrighted either?
(I am tech incompetent, but use linux now after trying and failing 15yrs sgo)

@SometimesLovely @NetscapeNavigator anything generated directly by AI is public domain. But! If you use a vibe coded program to create something like an image or script or 3d model, you still own that output (for the same reason Google doesn't own your essays written in Google Docs).

If you use AI to generate text or images for you in a work, you don't own those outputs, but you can still piece it together into a composite that includes your own work, in order to create something that you overall own (for instance, using an AI generated intro to a pamphlet you wrote. You still own the pamphlet, but the intro is public domain).

@NetscapeNavigator Endless Enshittification.
@NetscapeNavigator I got myself Linux =P And at work, it's somebody else's problem.
@NetscapeNavigator Will Windows 12 be the final nail that makes my employer allow me to run Linux on my company notebook? This would be awesome!
@taschenorakel @NetscapeNavigator As awesome as that would be, the LTS support for Windows 11 will run at least until 2034. I don't see many companies switching before that date. Especially not to an entirely new tech stack. Sad, but unfortunately the reality. But we can remain hopeful that this latest desperate push alienates even more people and makes them switch.
@NetscapeNavigator should be known my thinkpad from not even two whole fucking years ago wont be supported because it doesnt have an NPU, this is just gonna create ewaste and landfill, and most cant even upgrade bcuz hardware is expensive now
@NetscapeNavigator A dedicated NPU is a gimmick the average PC won't have; this is effectively saying Microslop don't want people using their OS.
@NetscapeNavigator #microslop really doing everything to make the name stick huh

@NetscapeNavigator

I don't have a dog in this race (longtime Linux user, and I've given up being a tech journo) but this report felt off to me.

WindowsCentral did a bit of extra source chasing and reckons it's overblown to say the least

https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows-11/no-an-ai-focused-windows-12-is-not-coming-this-year-false-report-gets-the-facts-completely-wrong

No, an AI-focused "Windows 12" is not coming this year — here's the plan

@HauntedOwlbear

Ah, well, then ... Windows is sure great, then.

*reads*
Wait. "... bringing back the movable taskbar" is on the 2026 roadmap for Win11??!! Right. Seems to be going great at Microslop.

@NetscapeNavigator

@fedithom @NetscapeNavigator I mean, I'd not use it or advise anyone else to.

I'm just not confident in the facts cited in the piece OP linked. Not because I think MS is too good to pull that kind of stuff, though

@NetscapeNavigator

Saying "it will introduce a subscription model" gave me the wrong idea, there will likely be a subscription option to tie in office 365 with AI features

"
references to a subscription model were found in the latest Windows preview builds, suggesting that Microsoft is finally going to force users to pay a monthly subscription to use Windows, right? No. These references are almost definitely tied to the newly discovered "IoT Enterprise Subscription" edition of Windows 11, not the client version of Windows vNext.
"[1]

"
The classic Home Windows is likely to remain a one-time licence. Advanced AI services would be added as an option.

No, of course 'Windows 12' won't require a subscription to use it

Rumors that the next version of Windows will require a subscription are greatly exaggerated.

Windows Central
@ambiguous_yelp Not sure if this will be the case, #MacroSlop is deeply in debt and needs a way to capture money, and for sure companies would need to pay, or do what Europe is already doing, moving away from #MicroSlop
@NetscapeNavigator Wow! I can't wait to spin up a VM on my linux box to find out :P
@NetscapeNavigator this is the most ridiculous thing theyve done so far geez

@NetscapeNavigator Microsoft continues in their assertion that your computer is actually their computer.

And the bright sides are what, being able to not install stuff you don't want like you already can in some OS's, and some pretty bits in the UI? I look forward to Microslop's burning crater.

(For the benefit of any twerp trying to claim this toot is some sort of threat: I'm referring to the idea of MS crashing and burning after making a particularly awful business decision)

@NetscapeNavigator Been into computers since 1975. Had DOS systems, otherwise always Linux and/or Apple. Never been tempted by MS.
How long until Windows 11 itself is forced out of support? I can see most people unwilling to upgrade if it means having to rent their own computers, and Microsoft forcing their hand anyways by removing security updates from Windows 11

@NetscapeNavigator So you're supporting more Linux.

I recently fell back in love with Mabox.

@NetscapeNavigator I make some income from Adobe. What's your suggestion? I need to run Photoshop with GPU acceleration. Any options?

@OSchell @NetscapeNavigator That article may have a point, but the site itself is so bad, so much ads and several popups, that I refuse to finish reading the article. But thanks for pointing it out.
Ubuntu is even easier to use than Windows imo
@NetscapeNavigator Will these requirements exist? Will my computer need this? Or did someone report that they might, potentially?

@NetscapeNavigator Let the normies eat shit and die with Microslop.

Every sane person would move to Linux and have it as their base OS. Wanna use Windows, just fire up a VM if the RAM allows or have a disposable flash drive with Windows 10/11 LTSC install on it.

@NetscapeNavigator The core OS will stay sub-free. And the optional features seem to be all AI.
Only the NPU part is really bothering me, everything else i don't care for.
If you really want to let people switch to Linux, concentrate on its strengths, not on the weaknesses of others. Open-source doesn't need populistic language and half-truths.

@NetscapeNavigator At the same time as California is leading the charge to cripple consumer computing with ID requirements...
And the AI firms have bought up all the RAM, SSD and flash...
And bought all the HDD from Western Digital...
And Google is closing Android to developers who don't want to buy into their syndicate...

This is the end-run to destroy FOSS and consumer computing. You will rent what they offer and comply with their terms or you won't have a computer.

@NetscapeNavigator
"I'm so glad, I'm so glad.. I'm glad, I'm glad, I'm glad that I became a Linux user with Ubuntu 6.10 in the year 2006! 😊
I'm STILL using Ubuntu and I have few regrets.
It really IS the best OS of the pack.

@NetscapeNavigator

whenever i hesitate switching back to linux i remember all the steam games i own and never played HAHAHA makes it REAL easy REAL quick.

@NetscapeNavigator I literally thought this was satire
@NetscapeNavigator totally agree! New circumstances can be a HUGE opportunity! Switching to Linux is comparable to... having great sex for the first time in your life (pardon my example 😃)
@NetscapeNavigator I urge them to start Windows 11 subscriptions so we can get on with it faster
@NetscapeNavigator A major boost for Linux, with great opportunities for companies offering a supported solution for businesses.

@sharan @NetscapeNavigator

The good news is the report is false

Not such a good news. I was fine with MS shooting themselves in the already bleeding foot

@Kingu I never said it is. 🤣

@sharan

Not you, but the article said it :)

@sharan

Here is the problem with Windows Central — they’ve been known to kiss Microsoft’s ass.

Does anyone remember how they first said Windows 11 would not require TPM 2.0? Or how, when it was finally officially announced that TPM 2.0 was required, Windows Central tried to tell us how great this was for security?

Every other news source, from PC Magazine to PCWorld to ZDNet, is warning you about the future — you should listen.

Or you can be hopeful and wishful and trust Windows Central.

@NetscapeNavigator As an ex-journalist, I take everything with a grain of salt. I just checked ZDNet and PCMag briefly, and they have covered Windows 12 in commentary and prediction formats. If there's some verified source other than PC World, let me know.

Until then, I PRESUME this could be the options, but I don't take them as granted or press releases.

When the time comes, Linux will be the option on my main too. Until then, stripped down W11, no AI, etc.

@NetscapeNavigator
Yes! This is the way - but currently, we can't *all* go there. Linux needs a LOT of work on #Accessibility.

This needs to become a priority, pronto, because many folks who rely on assistive technologies are unable to use Linux effectively. That SUCKS.

If you are a #Linux #Dev, please consider taking on an #a11y side-project.

@sb Exactly that. But yeah, go on telling me I am microsofts Bitch because I cannot switch to Linux because of Accessibilityreasons. Ah, I am only making Excuses, ya know. @NetscapeNavigator said it

@NetscapeNavigator This article was widely debunked and the source article seemed to be AI generated. I'm a Linux user who dumped Windows three years ago, but we need to be careful about spreading rumors.

@NetscapeNavigator I have Cali Linux. 🙌
@NetscapeNavigator This appears to be disinfo. I am no fan of modern windows, but we cannot allow ourselves to fall into the disinfo void. It helps no one.

@NetscapeNavigator
Great, so you're offending everyone who cannot, for one reason or another, switch to Linux. I'm not one of them, but I find the part about being "Microsoft's bitch" disgusting.

For an example reason, search for "linux accessibility". From what I read on the Fediverse, Linux doesn't score too many points there.
