So Trump first creates the problem and now you can pay him for protection, in true Mafia style.
#trump #iran #hormuz #geopolitics @geopolitics

He can rightly claim that the US has never had a president like him before. One who is so openly criminal... Unbelievable!

@ErikJonker @geopolitics I guess this is what “running the government like a business” looks like.
@ErikJonker @geopolitics Not sure I'd feel safe on board if I was still a sailor...
@ErikJonker @geopolitics
An offer nobody can resist, obviously. Very reasonable 🤪
@ErikJonker @[email protected] Are there any who believe this? If so they are paying a high prise. #iran can block #hormuz from land. No ships needed. Very small to pass with a few mile from the coast.
@ErikJonker @geopolitics Not "energy", but "Petrostuff".

@ErikJonker Is it just me or is this something no one needs to buy?

Even if you're BP or Shell or whatever if a tanker or two of yours gets blown up, the US Navy is *still* going to shuttle you through the Strait of Hormuz and it'll be considered a national emergency if any more than a couple of those tankers get taken out.

@josh @ErikJonker @geopolitics

From what I gather, this is less a case of protection money, and more the US government having to offer insurance coverage because the usual maritime insurance providers do not want to touch it because the risk is too great.

That said, this feels very throw-together and who knows if it will actually materialize as actual coverage.

@skjeggtroll @ErikJonker @geopolitics

You know. Socialism for the investment but capitalism for the consumer. That old chestnut.

@josh @ErikJonker
And very few companies are likely to risk their tankers and freighters in that seaway in any case, "insurance" or no. The credibility of that is, shall we say, open to question.

@n1xnx @ErikJonker

When the inner monolog is broken:

MY GOODNESS WHATEVER WOULD CAUSE A PERSON TO THINK THAT I WONDER? /s

@ErikJonker @geopolitics

For the last eighty years, the U.S.Navy has ensured free ocean transit everywhere in the world (save the Houthi missiles and Yemeni pirates).

#Trump has ended all that. Naval escorts will soon be needed in the South China Sea and the Malacca Strait.

@Stinson_108 @ErikJonker @geopolitics

So in other words, this is just a giant bullshit for domestic consumption grift.

@ErikJonker Well. His Gulf State vassals get 80% of their food through that strait, so he better be the ace up their sleeve..

But I know who’s going to pay the claims for those insurances, and it’s not the Trump family!

@geopolitics @ErikJonker ...no one on the planet can discern a coherent, understandable international policy from this MAGA-Trumpo administration...applicable as well to economic policy, domestic law & order policy, Constitutional law policy, and on & on....
@ErikJonker I've noticed that everything our Australian right- wing governments do creates a business opportunity for someone. Same is evidently true of Republicans.

@ErikJonker “Dat’s a mighty nice stable world order ya got there. It would be a shame if something… happened to it…”

JKC, AYFKM?
So, it appears that we had the money to cover ACA, but the orange cockwomble and his stable of brain dead warmongers, decided that he would rather kill people than even try to do his ACTUAL FUCKING JOB.
@ErikJonker @geopolitics So he can send Jared to rebuild Tehran.
@ErikJonker @geopolitics - of you invest in renewables and energy efficiency of your own sphere
@ErikJonker @geopolitics
And, of course, he doesn't pay his bills, so that insurance is worthless.
@ErikJonker @geopolitics
I read that as "tankers WITH our "protection insurance fee" paid will be convoyed-up and escorted ; anyone else trying to freeload will be sunk. By, for clarity, us (US).
