Exonerated man fights to hold his newly elected post despite GOP challenge

A New Orleans man exonerated after serving nearly 30 years in prison has a new fight on his hands. Calvin Duncan has been elected as the city's new clerk of criminal court, but now Republican lawmakers are racing to eliminate the position. Duncan won the clerk's office by promising to fix a system that failed him when he was trying to prove his innocence. Now, Gov. Jeff Landry and the GOP-controlled Legislature are seeking to shutter the office Duncan won. Senate Republicans passed a bill Wednesday to eliminate the Orleans Parish clerk of criminal court, saying it's part of a broader judicial overhaul. New Orleans is a predominantly Black and Democratic city, while the state Legislature is mostly white.

Important new analysis from @CrimethInc.

"In less than a year and a half, Trump has completely used up the advantages with which he began his second term. He has passed from appearing unstoppable to flailing pathetically. Obsessed with presenting an image of strength, Trump is indeed—as Shakespeare put it—a poor player whose hour upon the stage will soon reach its end. The stream of falsehoods and threats issuing from his administration can be seen for what it is: a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

This window of opportunity will not last long. The closer we draw to the 2026 midterm elections, the more people will be focused on electoral politics, including many of those who are currently participating in grassroots initiatives. We might be in a stronger position to address people at this moment than we ever will be again in the course of the Trump era.

Often, the moment of greatest danger—for example, when fascists or ICE agents are murdering people in Charlottesville or Minneapolis—turns out to have been, in retrospect, the moment of greatest possibility. By the time the terror has subsided and we recognize the potential of the situation, the moment is already passing."

The US Postal Service is dying by a thousand cuts. They announced today they are suspending matching contributions to employee pensions via the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS).

The CDC was about to publish a report that the 2025-2026 #COVID #COVID19 vaccine cut the number of emergency room visits and hospitalizations for healthy people in half last winter, but acting CDC director[*] Bhattacharya has blocked its release. Excellent reporting from Lena Sun.

Corporate Dems: While you whine about a streamer, Israel has killed 1800 Lebanese civilians including 120 children, injured 5800 civilians, & displaced 1.2M civilians—all with US taxpayer funded weapons.
This is while Netanyahu dragged fascist Trump into a war with Iran that left everyone worse off, killed 1900 Iranians, injured 25K more, & cost $45B in US taxpayer dollars.
If you had a spine you would cut all funding to Israel and demand Netanyahu's arrest. Stop Being Complicit In Genocide.
