@petrillic The only three other governments I can think of that put their #scientists under political control were #Nazi #Germany, the #USSR, and #China under #Mao. It arguably played a role in the failure of all three. The Nazi atomic weapon project was stymied by the rejection of relativity and QM as "Jewish science", the USSR greatly damaged its agriculture with Lysenkoism, and the Cultural Revolution destroyed an entire generation of academics.
