I pulled an old book off my shelf for airplane reading. "A Theory of the State," Yoram #Barzel, 2002. It describes in clinical fashion how a government hired as a protector of the population becomes a dictatorship. Today's goings-on fit Barzel's model. He wasn't predicting, just observing causes and effects. Remember, his context was the postwar rules-based order.

Ask for TSP. Trisodium phosphate. The best detergent ever. Use it to clean a garage floor before you paint. The package says TSP in big letters. In small letters, "substitute."

An old guy's complaint.

I go to the hardware store and ask for something simple, like paint thinner. You know, Stoddard solvent. I want to thin oil paint and clean brushes.

They sell me some stuff that looks like it was already used to clean brushes of white paint. It says Paint Thinner. Shake well before using. WTF?

The MSDS says it is completely soluble in water.

I'm all for new technology. I'm pissed when they put misleading labels. The kid seling doesn't know the difference.
