If @signalapp put up a crowd-sourced project fund to create a native app for linux (to support the many linux phone initiatives), I guarantee it would be funded quickly.

#signal #linux #linuxphone #privacy

@tinker @signalapp This, but also: I'd rather have signal-cli integrated well with a single user-facing app that lets me communicate with people regardless of what platform they're on. That's how the UX should be on a real Linux phone that's not trying to be a billboard for capitalist "apps".
@tinker @signalapp IMHO porting #Deltachat would be simpler, because it doesn't care about the phone number/SIM card, SMS verification, etc.
@d1 @tinker @signalapp
You can register Signal in a Android Vm. it doesnt care about a local sim card. Only recieving sms is important.

@moin @d1 @tinker @signalapp

SMS must be dependent on a SIM card somewhere in the equation.

@d1 @tinker @signalapp DeltaChat already works on Linux mobile and other platforms - no need to port...
@opensourceopenmind @tinker @signalapp #DeltaChat doesn't seem to be ported to the #Jolla phone, which is #Linux-based
ArcaneChat TUI | OpenRepos.net — Community Repository System

@richarddebruin @opensourceopenmind @tinker @signalapp well, that's a start, but no relative of mine would ever use a terminal client of #Deltachat.
@d1 @opensourceopenmind @tinker @signalapp nope, I hope the developer can turn it into a sailfishos gui version

@compl4xx @opensourceopenmind @tinker @signalapp Can anyone out there with a #Jolla phone confirm if #DeltaChat works with a GUI? Not just as a terminal-based app?
@d1 @compl4xx @opensourceopenmind @tinker @signalapp I might be able to check later today for you.
@d1 as far as i know it doesn't (unless you use the android app)
@d1 @tinker @signalapp If #SailfishOS cannot run flatpaks, appimages, debs, or rpms, comes with a proprietary closed source UI and components, uses the Android kernel instead of mainline Linux, it's simply diverged so much from traditional desktop Linux that I'd not consider it "Linux" any more, just like Android.
@opensourceopenmind @d1 @tinker @signalapp The #n900 was/is no linux phone to you, too?
@fooxl No idea, a little before my time. I was probably in diapers when it came out. Anyway, can it even connect to 4G mobile networks still... otherwise it's irrelevant and cannot be called a phone.

@opensourceopenmind It was broadly accepted as linux phone although it had the same characteristics as SailfishOS. But ofc everybody can define for themselves what's considered "linux".

BTW SailfishOS is based on RPM.

@fooxl @opensourceopenmind Also there's on going open sourcing. If you're interested check out the forum.
Regarding mainline from my personal point of view it's probably that there isn't any available out of the box for mainline socs.

@fooxl So does that mean #SailfishOS can use rpms? #DeltaTouch is packaged as rpm but people are still saying it doesn't work on SFOS...?

https://delta.chat/en/download

Perhaps they haven't tried the rpm?

@opensourceopenmind @fooxl

whats deltachat? can it chat with wa and tg?

@opensourceopenmind @d1 @Muppensish @richarddebruin Yes, it can. But it must meet the requirements (dependencies e.g. openssl) of the RPM. Also the GUI probably won't work on SailfishOS. You can find more info on the sailfish forums.
@tinker @signalapp I admit, Signal's phone number requirement is definitely causing hesitation with me.
@Catwoman69y2k @tinker @signalapp It's hostile to privacy, you really should consider #DeltaChat instead
@tinker @signalapp
If Molly is a third party app compatible with signal, what's stopping a different third party from just making a signal compatible app?
@Cycrev @tinker @signalapp Nothing, and they already exist: Signal-Cli, Flare, Whisperfish, SignalUT.
@tinker @signalapp Isn't there one already? Or what am I running on my Manjaro system? (Package is called signal-desktop.)
@SvenBothe @signalapp - Signal desktop (Windows, Mac, and Linux) is not a standalone app. It requires a phone to sync with. Right the only standalone native apps are for iOS and Android.
@tinker @signalapp Ah - got it. Thanks for the explanation!

@SvenBothe @tinker @signalapp Technically, #SignalDesktop does not require a phone to sync with.

It requires a primary device to sync with at least once every 30 days... that duration could have been reduced since I checked last.

My primary device is my Linux desktop running Signal-Cli from Flathub.

A phone number is required once to activate a new account - at registration time only - afaik, and I still hate that requirement, for the record.

@SvenBothe @tinker @signalapp it's not native, it's an Electron app (i.e. a stripped down Chromium browser hammered into obedience and demanding a gigabyte of RAM in return)
@tinker @signalapp it won't be private until they stop requiring a phone number, which is 99% of the times tied to a government id
@tinker @signalapp my precious phone number... Any one realise we need real tools for mainstream usage? Not spending time for redundant technology just to please a niche?
@tinker @signalapp will be better to spend the money in a decentralized alternativa like a client for XMPP instead.
@tinker @signalapp the app should also have a desktop UI, replacing the Electron bloatware that’s the only current officially sanctioned option

@tinker
#Matrix web-login from POS' Firefox would work. Matrix is on par with Signal cryptographically.

I would like to see something like Cwtch in Rust work in the Alpine environment someday. . .

@tinker @signalapp Totally agree, they seem to care quite little about Linux and even less about Mobile Linux :(
@signalapp @tinker I don’t even have a Linux phone (yet) and I’d contribute to such an initiative.

@AnnaGeeks There is voluntary initiative already for Sailfish! Check: https://gitlab.com/whisperfish/whisperfish/-/wikis/home

There is native client also for Telegram+matrix so situation within Sailfish is quite good in this regard :)

@tinker @signalapp There is quite well working app already for #SailfishOS! But would definitely be amazing if #Signal supported the development even little bit.
