Highly overrated, would not recommend.

Architectural heritage campaigners in the UK are calling for the Grade II listing of the building above Charing Cross Station in London; that’s it in the picture:

If successful, the 1989 building could be the first Postmodernist building to gain heritage protection in the UK. Only recently did Brutalist architecture (such as Southbank) start being listed, and I can imagine some will spit out their tea upon hearing the news. (King Charles, for one, will not be amused.)

Many of you asked that I react to Richard Dawkins announcing that he fell for a chatbot. Instead of just pointing and laughing (my initial reaction obv) I dug into the “why” of it all: his obfuscations, insecurities, and utter sadness https://skepchick.org/2026/05/richard-dawkins-claude-delusion/

hahaa! Successfully removed all IR and UV filters from my old Canon EOS 600D, I can do full spectrum, UV and IR photography now!

All of the following photos have been taken with a ~550nm+ lpf, meaning cutting everything under 550nm (blue, purple and uv) off. I love the vibrant pink foliage and dramatic turquoise skies #photography

Just finished reading this book. It was quite interesting, and joined the dots in my understanding.

A few takeaways: continental modernism only really arrived in the early 1930s, the explosion of “stockbrokers’ Tudor” originated in the Arts & Crafts movement but got picked up by speculative property developers pandering to sentiment, Swedish modern design was more influential in the 20s UK than I thought, and “art deco” is like “techno” in music: used to describe a lot of things that aren’t it

The tragedy of C++ is that you need to learn Haskell to write good C++, yet very few people who have learned Haskell are willing to write C++.

Now free for all to read... In December I wrote about the opening of Melbourne's new Metro Tunnel beneath the city centre - focusing in particular on the art within its station walls:

One oversight notwithstanding, that was a good idea: unless, for some reason, the word “lederhosen” is meant to appear in the project, it would have been way to search for and replace before going to production. Of course, one has to remember to actually do this.

Didn't see anything on the fedi about this, so in case you missed it like I did:

Today was the first day of operation of IC306 (Hamburg Hbf -> Stockholm C). IC307 started operation yesterday. This is a new daytime service of Snälltaget.
