Hi, the Mastodons. I don't know how this works yet or how active I'll be here, but I thought I'd introduce myself.

I'm a UK-based female AuDHD adult, choosing to remain mostly anonymous. I'm really just curious about how the Fediverse works - I can be ambivalent about social media but I thought this sounded refreshing in contrast to the big, powerful platforms which feel scarier to me by the minute. I've also been getting to grips with Linux recently, and am thinking about other ways within my limited means and courage to try to be involved with more of the small things that are about moving away from exploitation and towards caring for each other.

Take care out there :)

#introduction

@MelodicDinosaur hi, and welcome!

Iโ€™m sure youโ€™ll find it nice here. Youโ€™ve done the best first thing and done an intro post!

@saxifraga Thanks, Sax :)

P.S. So happy about Gorton and Denton ๐Ÿ’š

@MelodicDinosaur oh goodness, yes! Best result in Gorton and Denton!
@MelodicDinosaur @saxifraga we all are. I'm hoping it's the start of something really good.
@MelodicDinosaur you're nd and into linux; you're in the right place ๐Ÿ˜œ
@independentpen LOL, so *this* is where we've all been hiding! ๐Ÿ˜€
@MelodicDinosaur do you know about hashtags around here? The algo is chronological so tags are very helpful. Such as #actuallyAutistic or #AuDHD . There are a bunch of great weird ones too, #lichensubscribe (for lichen pics), #asstodon (donkey pics), #caturday (which today is). Check out @FediTips if ever you feel lost (:
@mjd did not know that! Thank you
@mjd @independentpen I didnยดt know this. I realize Iยดm doing so many things wrong here, I might be unable to finish fedi. Probably gonna start with a new char...
And welcome @MelodicDinosaur ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
@independentpen @FediTips Ooh... thank you!

@MelodicDinosaur @independentpen @FediTips

Welcome!

My advice: Step 1 is "follow 30 hashtags". There's no algorithm, so that's what gets your timeline started with things your care about.

There's lots of further advice and good further steps to take, but hashtags are really good starter seeds on Mastodon. Have fun!

@MelodicDinosaur

(Phases in time-traveler style)
Damn. The lichen people got to her first.
(It's either lichen, cats or sourdough around here. Pick your tribe.)

But seriously, welcome on board - great choice of server, you won't get flooded with shit on there!

My unasked-for advice - if you find that you've followed someone who floods your timeline you don't have to unfollow or mute them - you can also just turn their boosts off (if that's the problem) or if it's more a verbal diarrhoea thing put them in a list of their own.

Have fun. And stay away from the lichen freaks.

@independentpen @MelodicDinosaur
THEY KNOW WHAT THEY DID
@Hedgewizard @independentpen The *lichens*? What did they dooo?
@MelodicDinosaur @independentpen
Attention whores, one and all. Check their thallus type before engaging, that's all I'm saying

@Hedgewizard Oop! A friendly Hedgewizard. Hello!

I hope you'll forgive my asking such a purrsonal question - you're a very handsome cat, but are you a familiar or representative of the wizard or are you the wizard himself?

I'd rather not have to choose a tribe but it'd better not be sourdough because I tried one once and forgot about it and then it just got smelly and I threw it away so I'm afraid the little yeasts that live in the air will gang up on me if I ever try it again.

As for lichen vs. cats, I'll have to think carefully about this. I do like my new lichen friends but I don't want to end up embroiled in gang warfare. I'll have to seek specialist advice.

@MelodicDinosaur
That's Tiki. He's my over-familiar. This one is Ishi - if you hold him just right you can hear the wind whistling through the empty space between his ears

@MelodicDinosaur Hii, I can recommend you fedi tips website, they have mastodon account also where they post tutorials and tips about fediverse.

I recommend to follow hashtags and people you find interesting, block and mute content and people you don't want to see and try to engage with people in comments.

Hope you will enjoy being on mastodon.

@introvertcatto Thank you ๐Ÿฑ
@MelodicDinosaur you're welcome. Also, fediverse can be boring at the beginning when you first create an account but after following few hashtags and curating your feed to your liking you can enjoy it here, you can even find friends.
@MelodicDinosaur ๐Ÿ‘‹ Hi. Welcome ๐Ÿ˜Š

@MelodicDinosaur Hi there! The Fediverse is nice because you can make it as big or as small as you want it to be. I interact with a handful of folks, and that's my Goldilocks zone.

I struggle a lot with needing to know what the protocols, procedures and customs around certain things are. At least for me, there hasn't been too much friction along those lines here, which has made it an enjoyable place to hang out.

Hope it's a good experience for you, too!

@groink Hi Groink :). I'm relieved to hear that's the experience you've had. I relate to the worrying about it getting too overwhelming or accidentally getting something wrong. I'm surprised (in a nice way) that so many people have said hello!

Take care :)

@MelodicDinosaur
MD, your intentions, approach to social media, and interest in Linux all make you an ideal candidate to join the Fediverse.
I, for one, hope that your experience here will be rewarding for you, and that you will benefit greatly from being involved in this community.
@MelodicDinosaur hello, welcome, donโ€™t worry if it takes a while to find your way round. Following hashtags is a good way to see lots of relevant posts before you figure out who you want to follow.
Hope you have fun
@MelodicDinosaur Welcome! I see others have mentioned the very helpful fedi.tips and following hashtags, so I'll just say enjoy yourself and interact at the level that feels comfortable for you.
@MelodicDinosaur Hi and welcome aboard. I think you will fit in well here. ๐Ÿ––
@MelodicDinosaur Heyo and welcome to Mastodon :) enjoy your stay here!
@MelodicDinosaur Hello and welcome to the Fediverse network, of which Mastodon is only a small part.

@the_rebel Oh wow... that looks really cool, I didn't know there was so much. Thank you for this.
@MelodicDinosaur Take a look around, figure out what you actually want to do and what type of user you are. The Fediverse has the right services for each and every one of us.

If you want to write longer texts and are more of an organised type of person, then other services are more suitable for you.

First, get started and keep in mind that when you choose a service, you are only determining the appearance and functions that you yourself have.
The person you are communicating with does not have to have the same ;)
Like me, I am writing to you using the
#Sharkey service

You'll fit right in here! Welcome. Watch out for when @TheBreadmonkey goes off on a random train of thinking - which is quite frequent ๐Ÿ™‚

@greem @MelodicDinosaur

Wait, you can all see this?

@TheBreadmonkey @MelodicDinosaur yes, but from very far away so you look quite small.

@MelodicDinosaur @TheBreadmonkey @greem

Ben! Take that "ooh, fresh meat" glint out of your eyes and remember you're vegan.

What did we tell you? Only Swedes and Human Beans.

@MelodicDinosaur Welcome. You appear to have chosen a really good instance to be your Mastodon home, so that's a great start.
Enjoy! ;)
@scribblanitea Never a bad time to get t'kettle on!
@MelodicDinosaur Welcome to the fediverse!
