@redoak Both of my plum trees and my 3 apple trees should all be at maturity this year. I have multiple large currant bushes and a large amount of raspberries. My mulberry trees are looking very healthy and have been producing for years. I expect to be able to harvest hazelnuts for the first time from the yard this year. My ramp patch was very healthy last year. My nettles and sunchokes are unstoppable.
This isn't a withdrawal but rather a growth. I can eat things I grow in my yard. It won't keep me alive for very long but it is certainly nice to walk outside and see living things that one can eat and that other living things thrive with.
While I haven't shopped at Target since their disastrous dei rollback, there have been a few things for which I was struggling to find a reliable replacement source. I now buy Dr Bronners online direct from the company (did you know you can set up recurring orders?). Because I did that, I was able to try out Sal's Suds, which is a detergent made by Dr. Bronners. You can use it for dishes, general purpose cleaning, etc...
It smells pretty AND doesn't agitate my skin (dyshidrosis). I went to a local Korean home goods store and got a glass bottle to make my own dilution for general purpose cleaning spray.
I have decided to make requiring ID for online spaces as inconvenient and expensive as possible. I simply refuse. I have good enough credit to play chicken with a company that wants my id in order to pay a bill.
@redoak Making a specific effort to set aside money every month to support my creative friends directly through buying their art, music, donating to their ko-fis, etc
Changed my default search engine on my phone, which has surprised me with how good it feels to not be feeding that info into the Google machine any more (and this just reminded me to do it on my laptop)
Continuing to make things myself *and* share it, trying to brighten the world in any way I can (like @thirtycircles)
Good on you! My #Episcopalian parish did this & we're happy with how it's working
@redoak switched my default search engine to Wikipedia.
Trying to do the tasks of daily life by bike more.
Trying to be much more conscious of where I spend my time and attention.

Attached: 1 image A reusable placard for mobility-limited elder, consisting of a whiteboard, a two-foot steel ruler mounted by nut and bolt through a carefully hand-drilled hole, a second one-foot wooden ruler to stabilize, a chenille stick to bind it to the Rollator's back bar, and a narrow plastic container inside the walker saddle bag to keep the whole thing from tilting overmuch to either side. Still figuring out how best to put together a clear plastic envelope to weatherproof the sign, as the backing is only cardboard, and the dry-erase marker is only water resistant. But for a precipitation-free day, works quite well.
@redoak ok.
My weed-filled lawn is cheerfully flowering at the moment so I’m enjoying its little blue flowers rather than getting out the mower.
Update: here are the pics. They didn't load earlier.
Participating in a local Mask Bloc that provides free masks and air purifiers through a lending library.
Gardening at home using greywater. Dipping my toe into mushroom cultivation (Italian oysters). Sadly, my apple trees have not produced blooms the last 2 years (I suspect they need more sun) so I'm still working on that.
Purchasing all of our milk in glass jars from local farmers.
Boycotting Amazon, Walmart, Target, Home Depot, and Disney for their various shitty policies towards humans.
@redoak @stufromoz in the last several years I have:
- stopped buying from Amazon and sought local alternatives
- stripped back use of Google-, X/Grok-, and Meta-owned things to a bare minimum (retained only to keep in touch with people who can't or don't want to shift) and replaced them with services like @homeassistant, @kagihq, @Mastodon, and @fastmail
- cancelled accounts at Paramount Plus, Prime Video, DAZN, Spotify
- chosen to repair tools, tech, and other things where I can, rather than throwing away; also, passing things I no longer use on to others that can
It's not much, but it's something.
@redoak moving on from the ppl who wanna stay in it. surrounding myself exclusively with the hygiene community has done so much for my mental health.
maintaining some (extremely limited) presence on the mainstream platforms to keep tabs on what people are doing. theres a larp writing group that does workshops and stuff, people decorating their masks, having cc parties, all kinds of stuff
@redoak I’m expanding my garden this year to grow more food for friends and increase what we preserve. Hopefully turns into a nice little community space.
Also, slowly replacing all subscription-based services with FOSS and making donations towards ethical tech instead.
Aaaand finally deleting Instagram, expanding my personal website, and helping friends install Linux on their computers.
@redoak Public transit usage! I've been minimizing Lyft usage whenever possible.
Miscellaneous addendums:
- Donating platelets
- Trying to get into gardening
@redoak and then on a more personal level, I have friends who are not white/have not white children who are unwell given everything and going out into crowded public places causes them so much anxiety rn. So on my lunch break I try and offer specific help- like I'm running to the grocery store over lunch I'd be happy to pick up anything you need if you can get me a list by X time.
I think the specifics are more helpful, I get so many more bites than if I just say "how can I help you"
