NZ is starting day 2 of the global #CityNatureChallenge. In NZ, Wellington is off to an early lead and Christchurch close behind.

It’s early in the competition. We’ve got 4 days to observe then a week to upload and identify.

If you’ve not tried #iNaturalist yet, now’s the time. If you have, find some wild interesting thing(s) to photograph. Even one observation helps in the competition for the most observers. If lots of people do it, we find new species for the city.

Yesterday I took my cameras for a 10 hour bike ride in the hills and across the farmland around the city, then came home and ran a moth light in my back garden to see what moths we have this year. I took about 2,000 photos which I’ll upload to #iNaturalist later in the week. This morning I’m going to find as many species as I can in our garden, and then take my camera for a run through the southwestern suburbs, followed by more moth lighting. What wild things can you find?

Weird times with the new iNaturalist app. I'm sure their servers are getting hammered, but it's specifically failing over and over when I try sync/upload all of my observations. If I do them individually it doesn't seem to have any issues

Well, our region only had 24 observations for the entire CNC last year, and I'm already at nearly 50. So we did it! We beat last year!

It’s City Nature Challenge weekend!

All around the world, it’s a call for us to take photos of wild organisms of all kinds from April 25-28, 2025.

Then you upload them to iNaturalist, either via the app or the website and try to get them identified by May 4!

It’s a sort of global census of all wildlife, done by thousands of citizen scientists.

The best part is you can participate anywhere!

Here’s the culprit. If it hadn’t been in the sink I wouldn’t have stood a chance

Appears to be a Barn Funnel Weaver aka Domestic house spider (Tegenaria domestica). Probably silver dollar-ish with leg span or maybe a little bigger

Apparently one of the smaller species in the genus, which uhhh no thank you

love you spiders; love you from a distance please
