Damn.. Feels like more bad news than good is here.

My father in law died yesterday at 10am. Unlike a lot of "* in laws", both were dear friends to me.

He called us 2 days ago, saying he needed help cause his legs wouldn't work and needed help out of the chair. We were close by. He asked to eventually go to the ER, and we weren't able to help him. Called 911.

When he got to the hospital, was queued for emergency cardiac surgery. He coded 3x, then 2x overnight.

My wife followed his direct wishes and ordered termination of life support at 10am. Everyone who knew him affirmed that was what he said for the last 60 years of his life.

We're now having to do the terrible paperwork. My wife is the only child and grandchild. It falls on her, and I support her.

And yeah, we were going to go to Gettysburg next spring.

Whelp, it's friday.

I had a humorous text exchange today... grandma's social worker was like "I called transitional care, got voicemail, do you know what the plans are with her?", and I'm like "Oh yeah, she's at XYZ cremation.", just completely matter of fact.

Then I had a solid cry., because, I mean, grandma's dead.

It's Friday. The first Friday of 2026.

My new years resolution is to survive. That's all I have, that's all that matters. I want to get healthier, I want to finally accept myself for who I am, but I don't want to be disappointed if I fail my resolution, so my resolution is something I'm sure I can do, survive.

I need to work on my attitude. I've been deeply angry and grumpy for the last 6 months, and I don't know how to change that state. I've had moments of happiness here and there, but haven't had anything lasting. No feeling of joy. Just deep, dark anger.

Hugs to everyone. It’s totally understandable. I hope you can figure out a way to stop the anger, but it’s understandable

It is the new year! I’m also hoping to get healthier this year, and been noticing some really bad mental health signs… so I have therapy on Sunday.

@TheDrPinky kudos on that step ❤️ and for
@dntlookbehindu and others, the most effective antidote I’ve found for anxiety and anger and bitterness is the slow, consistent, and intentional practice of gratitude. Somebody I love once wrote “spiritual formation is the slowest of all human movements”, and learning to be very patient with myself in this area has also helped.
