Somewhere just outside Paris, a woman sighs in dismay as Word crashes for the third time.

Somewhere in the US our hero, sensing his time has come, suddenly becomes alert. He leaps into action, waking up his Thinkpad (he uses arch btw), and scours the web for his damsel in distress.

He immediately offers to help diagnose the problem. Nodding to himself, it's what he thought.

"You need to switch to Linux"

As quickly as he appeared, he vanishes back into the night, satisfied he's saved the day.

Don't be a hero.
@babe Bonnie Tyler lied when she wrote that smash hit "Holding Out for a Hero" didn't she?
@babe I'm not the hero you deserve. I'm the hero you need right now.
@babe
I love it! What a nice story!
@babe heck, if that's all it takes, next time *I'll* save you!
@babe oh my, what a hearty chuckle this just gave me
@babe who says chivalry is dead!

@babe

@babe okay but after installing Linuxabd all the necessary proprietary hardware drivers which complicated things only a bit, then installing WINE the errors are now different in MS Word

@babe

A few weeks ago, my brother gave me an early Christmas present by telling me that windows 11 has been a massive pain in his ass and he wants to switch his laptop to Linux.

I brought a Mint live USB over to Christmas dinner and then after we put the kids to bed I walked him through installation.

The next day he sent me an excited message saying his laptop is so much faster.

The day after that I got a message asking "why is sound not working?" And had to introduce him to the forums.

@babe

"Remember when we were in high school and I was sitting on the floor near the router with my laptop plugged in and looking annoyed? That was my wifi drivers not working. Trust me you have it way easier"

Is not that encouraging to someone who never had a reason to open a command line before although I did find that it's a known issue on his laptop that had a few easy to follow answers on separate forums

@babe oh noesies.. I feel the sudden need to crack open the Thinkpad (Gentoo, btw)...
@babe this needs to be a pinned toot at the top of the whole fedi
@babe she needs to use a typewriter and quit bothering the Internet about her shitty office software

@davbram @babe wow, seems like you've got more than one shitty take recently

Log off, go seek help

@babe I use Arch btw 😏

I'm always encouraging people to use Linux. Yes, it would be difficult at first.
No, you don't "have to"
It's more about politics and who you give power and your data, and your money.

When I decided to stop using WhatsApp, it was hell. Facebook, awful lonely moments. No more google on my phone, and some other actions I took. One of these actions is encouraging others to do it too. But, if it's too much yet, it's ok, one step at a time, at least you're on ✨ Mastodon ✨

@les_croquettes_du_chat I also use arch btw
@babe I don't it's too difficult 😁
There was no space left to type "(no)"

@willasaywhat @babe

"Sarabada..."

(Btw: The tuxedo is obviously a penguin reference.)

@willasaywhat @babe I would genuinely have been disappointed to not find this GIF in the replies. 🫡
@babe
Lol 😁😂 good story!
@babe 🧓 "WordPerfect never gave me these problems."
@babe the burning desire to save people from spyware riddled mediocrity.
@babe that hero is me in a slightly alternate timeline where I'm just slightly more annoying and also use arch for some reason.
@babe Bonnie Tyler's seminal song "Holding Out For A Hero" was about this. She was "holding out", because when she recorded the song, Linux did not yet exist. She could sense that it was coming within a decade, though #trivia
@healyn @babe further proven by the release of "where were you" 2 months after linux
@healyn @babe Holding Out For A Hero (Who Can Make My Sound Work)
@healyn @babe So that hero was originally Linus Torvalds? Understood.
@glennseto @babe correct, Bonnie Tyler was singing about Linus Torvalds

@babe “Oh, thank you, Linuxman! You’ve saved our city!”

(Or has he???)

@babe “As quickly as he appeared, he vanishes”

This bit seems not entirely plausible

@babe obviously the problem is that she isn't on LibreOffice.
@babe so… he’s the Tuxedo Mask of operating systems?
@babe literally me but dependent types
@babe And this is how I met your mother
@babe he may be huge queef, but he is not wrong.

@babe

I use an ancient copy of WORD but don't worry, I stole the fucker from The Pirate Bay

@babe shockingly, I'm seeing this just now.
