@jolla big *BIG* lumia vibes... hmmmm... NO$ so.. rips
@jolla 8TH PREORDER BABYYYYY
@gray @jolla Mediatek = closed binary blobs. Jollaboys, what are you doing?
I'm not in!
@gischpelino @jolla They probably chose m
Mediatek due to cost reasons? What alternatives are there?

@gischpelino @gray @jolla

Pick the lesser evil.
SailfishOS is a (mostly) open source OS thats gradually opening up. Firmware is closed.
Android with GMS is a closed source OS (if we are talking about device distributions). Firmware is closed too.

Besides that, due to regulations and other stuff, no SoC will ever be fully "open". Even ath10k has proprietary blobs.

@botchedrpr and Android is closing up even more next year and 2027 with all the sideloading restrictions :/
@gray @botchedrpr Installing apps is not sideloading. Or is simply eating food cooking?
@Dexruus Google themselves have referred to these 'unverified' apps as sideloaded; anything that doesn't come from an 'official' Android app store like Google Play or Epic Games, etc, is sideloaded according to Google

@gray See, thats why I dont call it sideloading.

Its installing an app.

Only because google calls it sideloading, its not sideloading.

@gray @botchedrpr Instead of wasting energy on recovering the unrecoverable sunken ship, we should explore new avenues for further innovation
@botchedrpr @gischpelino @gray @jolla This. Besides, MediaTek has *less* blobs than Qualcomm, and many of their SoCs have open-source TrustedFirmware (i.e SoCs used on Chromebooks).

MediaTek still has a lot to learn, but they massively improved over the past 5 years.

@elly @gray @gischpelino @jolla

Exactly. I'm a very happy person running an (almost) entirely open and ported by me boot chain on my MTK. I would've never had that privilege on Qualcomm chips. I hate people screaming "Mediatek is proprietary bullshit!" because of the chinese phone markets of 2012-2015 where nobody shared kernel source. Blame it on the vendor? Hell no, what a great phone they sold me... hmm... who to blame it on... my other phones have Qualcomm. It has to be MediaTek then!!!

@botchedrpr @elly @gray @gischpelino @jolla well, back then MTK had really bad name, unstable, hard to find custom ROM etc... Since I spoke 2 years ago about MediaTek with Angelo who worked on upstreaming I completly changed my mind 🤩
@okias @botchedrpr @elly @gray @jolla let's hope the very best. I ordered one to support Jolla and get digital sovereignty.
@elly @gray @gischpelino @botchedrpr @jolla Remember the "everyone who has a mobile phone has a piece of Israel in the pocket" speech of Netanyahu? I think/assume this is Snapdragon-level surveillance. I am aware these things have some nicely hidden call-home- features and can only assume this is, what he meant to say.
@ar1 you should stop believing conspiracy theories and go touch some grass
@elly Yeah. I hope that was meant in jest.
@elly Ok, I touched grass and you are right.
@botchedrpr @gischpelino @gray @jolla well, technically you could have fully open RISC 5 processors, but they're not there yet.
@jolla @brie Never going to send money again after that disastrous tablet campaign. By my count, I'm still owed €100 for that one. But good luck with this campaign I guess.
@collectifission @jolla @brie For what it's worth, the voucher system worked out well for the Jolla C2. (And I say that as someone that also had ordered the Jolla Tablet and never got it or any partial refunds.)
@jolla will the phone be waterproof?
@jolla Cyan / blue cover option for the Jolla One vibes please 🙏
@me
That was the same colour as mine!
@jolla
@jolla the back cover again ... very nice :-)
@jolla This will definitely join my collection of Jolla phones and Mind2..
@jolla What about #Accessibility? Is there a #Screenreader built in?
@Clio09 It has a Wayland based UI so accessibility options are limited. @jolla

Mamutovo
@jolla Is the factory reset function still going to have a paywall?

@jolla bought

Thank you for supporting European self defense.

@jolla I wish I could I just won't have 500 dollars I can spend on a phone in a few months. It's a really cool project and the idea of a privacy switch is awesome.

@jolla Ok nice, a decent European Linux phone. That's good. Although it is a bit too large for my tastes.

#jolla #linux #european

@jolla If the switch is configurable in software, how can it be trustworthy?

@leonid this.

It’s a feature but not a safety feature.

A hardware switch that can be software configured is an accessibility feature for a software switch. Never more than that.

@jolla So bummed there won't be a smaller one.. A smaller phone (like an iPhone Mini) is SO needed from literally **anybody**.
@buck @jolla Agreed. As a smaller-handed person, I'd love a small phone.
@buck @jolla absolutely agree. It’s stupendous I haven’t had anywhere to go phone-wise since this old iPhone 13 Mini
@Setok @jolla Won't someone **please** make a phone for us Mini users!?

@jolla looks interesting, but 500€ for pre-orders and even 600€ - 700€ is quite expensive for me.

Longevity of my phones is determined by wear and tear, and accidents breaking the display. So, 350€ is my personal limit, with ideal around 200€ and less.

Wish there was a low-spec variant of Linux phone.

I need just calls, microSDXC storage, and good enough camera for documentation photos,... and performance, for non-demanding apps I use, is irrelevant.

@kravemir @jolla They do also sell https://commerce.jolla.com/products/jolla-community-phone, the new device is specifically targeted at a bit higher end, because people requested that, iirc.
Jolla C2 Community Phone

@deepbluev7 @jolla nice option - I could have clicked further 🙈

There's also PINEPHONE (non-PRO), which costs more and has weaker performance specs, but has USB-C with host and DisplayPort Alternate Mode output.

@Miroslav Kravec so no faiphone for you either?

@jabgoe2089 same price category. Though, I used new iPhone 7, but it was a company provided phone.

For me, it's unreasonable to spend such money on utility tool with a high risk of physical damage. Breaking 200€ phone hurts less.

One phone I broke with slip from sunchair and only 50cm fall, but at unlucky angle on concrete.

The minimum monthly wage after taxes in my country is 660€. As a developer I earn more, but it would serve me (nor my family) no benefit to spend it on premium phone(s).

@jolla I would love this device but with @postmarketOS
@jolla How long will the hardware be supported with updates?
@quino_schuetz @jolla They usually don't provide a clear answer to this, since it depends on several factors and in the past it wasn't even clear if Jolla would be around for that long, but historically it has been between 5-8 years, usually on the higher end for first party devices.

@deepbluev7 @jolla @quino_schuetz I bought my first Jolla device in 2014 (same year Fairphone launched their first phone) and in contrast to the Fairphone, which only got support for two years, my Jolla got updates for 6 years. After that time it broke physically; so i think the Jolla was the more sustainable choice 😉
@jolla @quino_schuetz (Actually the order page says minimum 5 years, missed that the first time I read it)
@quino_schuetz @jolla they’ve generally been good at offering support for a long time (my Sony Xperia II running Sailfish is still getting regular updates). They promise 5 years minimum.

@jolla hmm. "Real phone, but we can't tell you the CPU or OS support timeline".

Pass, sadly.

#linux #geek

@jolla NO WAYYY NEW LINUX PHONEE
God, didn't expect y'all to go from collecting suggestions to announcement this quickly hahaa
@jolla Please share the exact SoC planned for this, as it can give a hint about potential mainline Linux support in the future.
@jolla if I get a voucher for the both tablets that never came in, I would make a new order, even though I just got a Shiftphone.

@jolla sadly it runs #sailfishos with utterly inconveniet UI... 🤷‍♂️

Is SailfishOS finally fully FOSS?

@wojtek UI is the main reason why I still use SailfishOS, for me the best UI/UX on smartphones available.
@wojtek @jolla not fully yet but they say it will be eventually and have been gradually releasing more parts of it as open source.
@wojtek @jolla Probably a matter of taste then, the UI and UX was what I liked most and what kept me using it for 12 years before giving in to all the papercuts in daily usage.
I hope they manage to catch up on their technical debt some point (browser, Qt).
