“If everyone who streamed All Hell on Spotify had done so using Tidal instead, we would have received an extra £31,847.38, which would double the amount we made from streaming of the album in this time period. Or if everyone used Apple Music it would have been £12,331 more.”

Los Campesinos! break down streaming royalties. In other news, Fuck Spotify.

💸 Here’s how much money Los Camp! make from streaming… - Los Campesinos!

Los Campesinos!

Following on from this, people have been asking about streaming rates compared with YouTube (worse even than Spotify!) and Qobuz (A bit more than Tidal!). Qobuz is currently the #2 highest paid streaming rate, the #1 is actually… would you believe… Peloton!

For me, streaming is a supplementary to my own music collection (Bandcamp & physical media), couldn't get on with Qobuz or Deezer, I really liked Tidal (but it has a 10k song limit) so currently use Apple Music.

@jonhicks what do you mean by songs limit on Tidal? Like, you can only have 10k in your account? 👀
@artlucas 10,000 items (tracks, albums, artists, playlists combined)
@artlucas @jonhicks, does an album with ten tracks in it count as one or eleven “items”?
@volemo @artlucas I'm hazy on that kind of detail, all I know is that it isn't enough and I've hit my limit :/
@jonhicks I see! I wonder why 🤔
@artlucas I *think* it's a technical limitation, and one that probably doesn't bother most folks. My wife rarely saves anything to her library, so it wouldn't affect her.
@jonhicks Makes sense! It probably wouldn't bother me too, I think 10k is quite a lot 😅
@jonhicks I used Apple Music. And vinyl (and yard sale CD finds). Just recently started Bandcamping and am slowly picking up a few things there. Need to do more of that.
@cdevroe I feel that Bandcamp has potential to grow into a great streaming competitor with the right companion app. They keep getting bought out and passed on, and can't help

@jonhicks I’ve used the app. It works ok for what it is.

Somehow they’ve managed to keep a pretty great culture and service going. I hope it continues.

I really like Bandcamp Friday, live listening sessions, and the social aspect of seeing people support artists.

Taylor should have bought it.

@cdevroe @jonhicks And also in Bandcamp Friday some musicians say it significantly boosts their income.
@jonhicks hmm, the 10k song limit might be an issue for me. I happen to know that that’s the limit for a single playlist on Spotify. Or it used to be that time I tried to add everyone’s end of year playlists to one mahoosive one for myself!
@jonhicks how deeply uncool using #spotify is.
@jonhicks I'm curious how much more they would have made if, theoretically, all those people have bought the album instead, physically or digitally. Or even some part of them.

@anotherdream @jonhicks assuming, ten songs on the record, giving 1 million sold copies: a typical contract back in the day paid 10% of the retail value to the band. At a cost of say $15 per disc, gives $1.5 million gross. Subtracted from this would be a great many things, such as all expenses involved in recording, mastering, promotion and distribution. Let's call it $250.000 at best, we'll round it up to half a million, giving the final check to the band of one million dollars.

This economy does not exist anymore and too many things have changed for the numbers to be really comparable. For example, an obvious requirement to participate in that economy was being someone a record company would be willing to front half a million dollars to, money they could, and frequently did - lose.

@jonhicks that's crazy. I've been using Spotify for years. It doesn't seem that much better than alternatives, though. Fuck, I'd switch if it meant supporting indie artists. Maybe Deezer or Tidal.
@LMNOChris @jonhicks I switched to Tidal (freaking autocorrect) a while back and it's been great. The quality of audio is significantly better, even on Bluetooth earbuds and absolutely noticeable with my janky ear drums.
@LMNOChris If you can live with the interface, Qobuz pays the most
@jonhicks @LMNOChris I chose Qobuz a couple of years ago for different reasons, one the amount it payed the artists and another because it was a small company.
@jonhicks I signed up for a two month trial for Tidal and copied over my library. If I don't like it I'll try that next. I listen to way too much indie to not care. Gotta support the creators 🤘
@jonhicks what about Qobuz? I suppose something around 6x spotify
@Volpit @jonhicks I switched from Tidal to Qobuz this year, primarily to benefit the artists I stream. So, I'd like to see this comparison, too, in case I was wrong.
@BoydStephenSmithJr @Volpit @jonhicks me three... since the streaming service itself is not really my cup of tea, I really hope the royalties are going where they should go
@lumiukko @BoydStephenSmithJr @Volpit Yes Qobuz would slightly more than Tidal. Qobuz is also not beholden to SF tech bros, but I struggle to get on with that interface.
@Volpit Qobuz would be slightly more than Tidal

@jonhicks I just bought a bunch of their albums. I LOVE their music and was reminded to look for new releases.
@jonhicks this is not an apple to apple comparison. Spotify has a free tier. Apple Music does not. If you take away a free option and offer only paid options, many people will simply not listen to it. The increase in income for the artist is most definitely not going to be the number quoted. Depending on circumstances, it’s even possible that that counterfactual yields a decrease.
@gaberber That free tier is yet another reason why Spotify needs to get into the sea
@jonhicks @gaberber hey hey, the sea's got enough problems without you filling it full of Spoti garbage!

@gaberber i feel like people just want to 💩 on Spotify.

people would rather complain about (a made up) payment per stream figure rather than focus on the fact that it makes up the majority of the streaming income they make and that other services just don't have the same volume of users.

@jonhicks wow, well, as a #Tidal user, that's a bit vindicating. i have always wondered whether it's *actually* significantly different from Spotify for artists, or essentially the same when the check comes. still probably the lesser evil, though?
@travisfw Yeah, I was taken aback by how much of a difference that $.01 makes!

@jonhicks

This does convince me to try Tidal. I had similar thoughts about Youtube. Seeing people make less than half a cent per view seems really unfair for any video that had any amount of work in it. One feels that it could just as easily be $0.03c one off per video (though people would need to sign up with a card), have no ads, and the quality for both the creators and viewers would go up.

@jonhicks what are the stats for YouTube music?
@jonhicks wrong way to think about it. It's possible they made less per steam but more gross, because of spotify's reach

@jonhicks

Currently listening for free on Bandcamp and it's Bandcamp Friday so I can buy the album and they get all the money!

All Hell, by Los Campesinos!

15 track album

Los Campesinos!
@jonhicks Yep. Not perfect service (qobus—Mac app is weak) majors on payments and true HD. I’ve been trialing for a few months. Very nice and very nice not using Spotify.
@jonhicks when people ask how Tidal is better I honestly answer that it's primarily the lack of joe rogan. I might be still paying pennies to artists, but at least none of it goes to that piece of shit. Or ai "bands". Or spotify.
