Hey Fediverse! ๐Ÿ‘‹
New here and looking to connect with folks in #OTSec, #SmartHome, #HomeAutomation, #KNX, oversized #Homelab setups (#Proxmox / #OPNsense / #Docker) and the whole #FOSS / #OpenSource world.
Also into #3DPrinting and currently turning my house into a fully automated playground. ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ๐Ÿก
Say hi if youโ€™re into similar things!
@yehor Thanks for saying hi! ๐Ÿ‘‹
What does your smart home look like? Which systems are you using, and what do you run locally? Curious to hear! ๐Ÿ˜Š
#SmartHome #HomeAutomation #Homelab
@ChrisLink @yehor At my church, I set them with a #homeassistant Green with a zooz-800. They had a pre-existing Yale Assure YRL-216 that I integrated with zwave module. I use Keymaster to manage the codes. Having the expiring code and basic scheduling which is great because our church does rentals.
@hydrian @yehor Hey, thanks for sharing! Sounds really cool. ๐Ÿ˜„
@ChrisLink well, itโ€™s Home Assistant together with Phillips Hue and a secondary ZigBee network for non-Hue devices. Everything is local except my Samsung robot vacuum integration I built myself through API calls to SmartThings.
@ChrisLink Hi ๐Ÿ‘‹!
@farmous Hey, thanks! ๐Ÿ˜Š
Your name definitely rings a bell โ€” I think weโ€™ve chatted before in the Home Assistant forum.
If I remember correctly, the first blueprint I ever used was actually your Hue โ†”๏ธ KNX blueprint! ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ”ง
Great to meet you here!
#HomeAssistant #KNX #Hue #SmartHome
@ChrisLink If you had a question about Knx there, chances are quite high. I'm maintainer of the integration ๐Ÿ˜‰
Nice to meet you again here!
@farmous Okay, wow โ€” then I really owe you a million thanks! ๐Ÿ™Œ
Amazing! Thanks so much for your work!
#KNX #HomeAssistant
@farmous @ChrisLink Hey, nice to meet you here! Just started planning a house with KNX, will definitely (later) also use homebridge. Super excited already :-)

@boyesen @farmous
Hey, nice running into you here! ๐Ÿ˜Š
Iโ€™m currently planning a simple, "native" KNX integration between my ventilation system and domestic hot water heat pump.

Goals:
โ€ข key parameters on the KNX bus (without spamming it ๐Ÿ‘€)
โ€ข basic control even if IT / Home Assistant is down
โ€ข all the #dataporn flowing into the #Homelab ๐Ÿ“ˆ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ

Anyone else doing #KNX and #HVAC #heatpump integrations?
How do you balance low bus traffic vs โ€œstill want the dataโ€?

@ChrisLink @boyesen I guess heat pumps don't require sub-second precision to be controlled, do they?
If you really require high resolution sensor data, Knx isn't the right tool.

Other than that, I'm more or less happy with my ABB ClimaEco heating controller (AC/S). It's a generic Knx application controller that's ETS configured (which imho is a downside). But I don't use a heat pump myself - shouldn't make much difference though.

@farmous @boyesen
Both my ventilation system and domestic hot water heat pump speak Modbus RTU.
The plan is to intercept them via a Modbus RTU โ†’ TCP gateway.

From there:

Minimal, selected values โ†’ KNX via a Modbus TCP โ†” KNX gateway

Richer data set โ†’ Home Assistant directly on the Modbus TCP level

One RTU bus, multiple TCP clients, different consumers depending on their strengths.
Simple where it needs to be, detailed where it helps.

@ChrisLink Hi from a KNX-guy here!
Hey @fiskelandslaget! Iโ€™m currently renovating my house and want to connect as much as possible using KNX. ๐Ÿ”ง๐Ÿก
Iโ€™m curious: What does your KNX setup look like? What have you integrated โ€” lighting, shading, heating, sensors, energy management?
Happy to hear your experiences! ๐Ÿ™Œ

@ChrisLink (Disclaimer: I work with selling KNX and KNX courses)

I have renovated my whole house using KNX. Lightning, heating, CO2-sensors, energy price and energy management, sun shading and so on.

Also tried different other protocolls like Z-Wave, Zigbee, KNX RF and other products like Homey, HA, Ikea and Philips Hue.

How are you going to make your setup?

@fiskelandslaget Oh wow โ€” that sounds really interesting!
Iโ€™d love to hear more!
What were the biggest challenges for you? And looking back, what had the most benefit or the most positive impact? ๐Ÿค”โœจ

For my part: Iโ€™ve tried a lot over the past decades โ€” but KNX never disappointed me. Thatโ€™s why my goal is simple: get everything natively into KNX and hard-wired. Heat pump, water valves, ventilation, PV + storage, AC units, lighting, shading, alertsโ€ฆ all of it. โšก๐Ÿก

@ChrisLink  Hello!
What are you running / hoping to run with your setup?

I've got most things I need now, I just need to decide on which photo storing/sharing software to use. None of them (so far) are perfect :/

@chewie Behind the scenes, my setup runs on Proxmox as the hypervisor, with a now fairly large Docker VM (Portainer) inside it. All data lives on a Ugreen NAS, and the network stack is managed with OPNsense + UniFi / MikroTik.

Key services in daily use: Nextcloud, Home Assistant, Paperless-NGX, GitLab, Immich, Jellyfin โ€” plus the usual IT admin overheadโ€ฆ because itโ€™s fun. ๐Ÿ˜„โš™๏ธ

What does your setup look like? Already tested Immich?

#Homelab #SelfHosting #Proxmox #Docker #OPNsense #HomeAutomation

@ChrisLink @chewie Does Immich support guest/public access yet? Thatโ€™s what originally stopped me from switching over.
@ClickyMcTicker @chewie Turns out it can do that now! ๐Ÿ˜„
Though honestlyโ€ฆ Iโ€™ve never actually tested it myself. Everyone in the family just has their own user, and so far thatโ€™s been more than enough.
@ClickyMcTicker @ChrisLink you can share a publicly accessible link to albums on Immich, and can control whether people with the link can view, download and upload. That what you're looking for?

@ChrisLink Nice!
I'm using an old version of vmware on 2 servers. One to run some web servers, DokuWiki, LibreNMS, TPLink Omada Controller, Technitium DNS (like pihole), Redmine, ntfy, Yacy, SearxNG, Jitsi, BBB, Axigen, Hauk, Openfire (Jabber), Owncloud, ProjectSend, Privatebin, Netbox and OpenDCIM.

I need to reinstall NetXMS and really try and migrate everything off LibreNMS at some point as I prefer it.

On the other is my Fediverse server, which runs Mastodon, mastowall, Peertube, and Pixelfed, although I don't really use Pixelfed and it seems to have de-federated itself from everyone else ;(

I have another old server that is running OPNsense.

I tried Immich, but there didn't seem to be a way of adding custom tag / descriptions. The "AI" bit seems mainly for people, but I will mostly be categorizing these guys: @Rabbits

I should try Immich again as it has changed since I last tried.
I'm veering towards Photoprism atm, but I really need to make a spreadsheet of the pros and cons :/

Edit: oh, and I'm running Valheim for some friends.

@chewie @Rabbits Wow, that sounds wild โ€” in a good way! Respect! ๐Ÿ˜„
I keep having to look up some of these services just to figure out what they actually do.
Do you have a Matrix instance as well? Thatโ€™s still on my to-do list.

@ChrisLink ๐Ÿ™

Haha, sorry, I should have provided links.
No, I think XMPP is enough for chat (as it now can do audio and video calls on android) for me at the mo, although I hear it's a good system.

@chewie Took a look at Matrix + Element today โ€” and wow, it seems like a really solid replacement for my old TS3 server, which Iโ€™ve grown pretty tired of using. Modern features, self-hosted, open โ€” I like it! ๐Ÿš€

@hans06801 @chewie Thanks! It looks great and reads well.
Sadly, there seems to be no voice/video chat โ€” and voice is a must-have for me. ๐Ÿ”Š
@ChrisLink @hans06801 same for me unfortunately

@chewie @ChrisLink

Delta Chat has already 1-on-1 video calls (beta) but no group chat yet.

Help testing upcoming Delta Chat release with calls ๐Ÿ“ž!

Short answer: no. In order to always be able to connect, at least one of the parties has to use a Chatmail server, because Chatmail servers (will) come with a TURN server. Without a TURN server itโ€™s not guaranteed that the two parties can connect to each other. Sometimes they still can, (by using just a STUN server, which is used even for non-Chatmail accounts), but in most cases they can not. AFAIK this is still under consideration, i.e. whether to just disable the โ€œcallโ€ feature for non-Cha...

Nice! I don't think jabber can do group calls yet either.
