Our intro question:

Q1. Where are you posting from today? The solstice is today! What is this like where you are?

#BikeNiteQ #BikeTooter #Cycling cc @bikenite

@bikenite A1. Hello #BikeNite, I am in Oakland, CA as usual. It feels a little strange to see so much sun so late in the day. The light looks beautiful when it's coming from so low in the sky. It was nice to be riding yesterday evening and still be in the sunlight.

@ascentale @bikenite A1: It cloudy! North King County, north of Seattle. Rain expected tonight, and wow do we need it. We have July grass already. Maybe even August grass.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite Tirana, Albania. Very hot, humid, and a short thunderstorm.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite

Northern Monterey County. It's sunny, but quite windy. Other than the incessant wind and persistent low clouds, it was nice bicycling at Ft. Ord National Monument this morning.

There is a lot of ongoing clearing and strategic fuel break preparation for the upcoming prescribed burn.

@ascentale @bikenite
A1.
Hi from Kingston, Ontario, Canada!
This is a temperate part of the northern hemisphere, and just glorious weather today. Mid 20s, low humidity, clear skies and bright sun.
#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite A1: Hudson Valley. It was crazy hot + humid yesterday, cooler, drier and stiff winds today, but very high heat and humidity coming our way starting on Sunday. We could easily hit 100˚.

I had a great day of biking and exploring today, but learned soon after getting home that my community was hit by an ICE raid early this morning. No details, lots of speculation and outrage.

#climatechange

@ascentale @bikenite A1: I’m just outside Boston, MA, and it’s lovely outside- though quite windy.
We’re headed into a very hot week, so that’s going to suck.

#bikenite

@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A1: Posting from Zurich, Switzerland. I rode home from dinner with friends around midnight. Despite it had like 29 degrees C around 4pm and was still warm enough to sit outside just in a t-shirt, shorts and sandals at around 19 degrees C around midnight, it felt too cool to ride home that way. So I put on a thin long t-shirt, a hi-viz wind jacket and some thin and colorful (neon-yellow, neon-pink and petrol) cycling socks. Felt totally comfortable again.
@ascentale @bikenite@a.gup.pe A1: From Seattle, WA. It started out a bit rainy followed by some clouds, but the afternoon turned to be beautiful. I rode to the city centre to join my manager and another co-worker for lunch. It was a bit chilly on the way in but coming back was quite pleasant! #BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite

Hi!
A1. I'm camping high (9300 ft) on a mountain in central NM, where it is warm and breezy.

@ascentale @bikenite I'm posting from my kitchen in Worcester, MA. The weather is pleasant; not too hot out humid, but it's been a fairly windy day. I ran errands on my bike earlier and hit some stiff headwinds and lots of windblown debris.
@ascentale @bikenite A1: Nagoya, Japan. Hot today, a run of five days of warm rain starts tomorrow. We're in the middle of rainy season, but rain has been sparse.
@ascentale @bikenite
#BikeNite A1:
I am posting from home in Rochester Minnesota after having made pizza in my outdoor pizza oven.
The 44th parallel is just 2 miles North of my house. At this latitude the sunrise is at 5:26 a.m. and sunset 8:56. It's still light out at 9:30 p.m. The implication is that bike rides can start very early in the morning or go late into the evening without lights. With the heat warning coming this weekend, very early morning rides can beat the heat.
@ascentale @bikenite A1. Northern Virginia as usual. Today we got a brief break in the weather, so I tried to rush all the yard work to completion before the big heat wave hits. Luckily plenty of daylight to do this! But now I’m pooped. #BikeNite
@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite: A1. Ventura County, California. It's sunny but a nice temperature, as there's some marine influence today (yay!). Great weather for riding.
@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A1 Enjoying a beverage at the Hop Garden in Paoli, about 15 miles south of Madison, WI.
@ascentale @bikenite A1. From my usual Seattle. There’s a big festival here including a naked bike parade. I’ve only attended a few times and never participated in the bike ride. I’m leading a group ride tomorrow instead.

SOLSTICE PARADE - Fremont Fair

#BikeNite A1: Posting from #WaterlooRegion, along the Health Valley / TransCanada trail. Taking a snack break at my favourite spot overlooking the Conestoga River.

It's been a nice day. A little muggy now, and threatening to rain, but I should be able to get home before that if I don't answer too many BikeNite questions now. Still light out! Yay, #Solstice!

@ascentale
@bikenite

@bobjonkman @ascentale whoa, we just missed each other!

@ascentale @bikenite A1: hello from Somerville, Massachusetts, United States, near Boston!

the sun is about to set on the longest day of the year, like right.... about..... now

the weather has been nice today, not too warm, not too humid. it was kinda cloudy and windy today, but now it's just clear and pretty calm. good stuff.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite
#BikeNite A1a:
My customary solstice "dad" joke:

Q; What is the longest day of the year?
A (In Minnesota): The first Sunday in November because it is 25 hours long (changing from CDT to CST).

@ascentale @bikenite

A1. Chicago, it's hot and about to get hotter this weekend. We turned on the air conditioning this week and look forward to cool nights when they come.

Plenty of people out enjoying summer tonight.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite Still 30 minutes until sunset tonight at 2100 hours which puts me just north of @MartyCormack. Hot and windy today and with triple digit heat indexes and lots of wind expected for the next few days I’m taking a small bike break. #bikenite

@ascentale @bikenite

#BikeNite ! woo hoo

A1. Posting from Ann Arbor, MI. It's going to be super hot the next couple of days - "Extreme Heat Watch" hot - heat index up to 104F.

I'm not expecting to do a lot of daytime cycling in weather like this.

#miwx

@ascentale @bikenite Joining from Carbon County Montana. Beautiful solstice today, cool with light winds. A storm rolled through midday cooling things further.The nights seem more dim than dark, and snow is forecast for the mountains this weekend.
@ascentale @bikenite D.C. I rode to the airport to pick up a rental car , about a 5-6 mi ride in the waning twilight of the Solstice. It was nice, only downside was having night vision messed up by oncoming cars in nearby road and not being able to see the unlit trail at times.
@ascentale @bikenite A1: Somerville, MA. We're in a bit of a heat wave, but today was absolutely wonderful (windy though, some of those gusts were a bit much)
@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A1. Posting from Ventura County, California again. Our weather has been all over the place lately, with a short heat wave a few days ago, but back to June Gloom this morning with cooler temperatures. Perfect day to ride out on my ebike and do a little trail work on a short local favorite trail. I thought I would stop doing trail work once I got low on water, but I got tired before that happened. I always underestimate how much work there is to do on these trails and doing it on my own with only battery hand tools is a lot slower than being with a trail work crew with larger tools. I was working on a semi-official trail, so didn't want to go overboard. I'm trying to make this a regular summer habit maybe one or two days a week. The town open space agency doesn't maintain these types of trails and even many of their official trails don't get work done on them.

@ascentale @bikenite

A1. Tokyo, with the a/c on. I'd planned to get in a shorter ride (c. 65km) today, but just didn't have the juju. I biked to the LBS (Blue Lug, highly recommended if you're not into carbon fibre) to get the last part* needed for the new commuter. Then I cleaned up a bit in the Workshop in the Sky to prepare for tomorrow, when my son and I will get that bike ready to ride (inshallah)!

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite

A1 (cont'd).

* Last part needed to get it ride-worthy. There may yet be modifications and accessorizing.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite A1. Highcliffe-on-Sea, 25-30C, moderate SW wind. Beautiful cycling weather until about 9am, after which it is like pedalling in a hairdryer. But after riding through the winter I'm not knocking it. #BikeNite
@ascentale @bikenite posting from a muggy London whilst drinking breakfast coffee. Notmuch cycling planned for today - too hot - too tired - too many chores to take care of
@ascentale @bikenite A1 Cumbria, UK for this #BikeNite and we're mid-heatwave with plenty of mid-summer sunshine. Rides are hot, hot, hot. 🥵

@ascentale @bikenite A1.

Melbourne, Australia. A warm winter's Saturday for the shortest day of the year. Huge numbers of bikes around earlier today, mostly people meeting at a coffee shop or cafe, on a table outdoors since the weather is good.

The many bike paths, bike lanes and quiet roads, and bike racks, the frequency of trams, the provision for pedestrians all seems to have reached a criticality here in Collingwood and Fitzroy: the number of people around clearly could not have all arrived by car.

Even last night when leaving the after-work mingle at the pool room my local coworkers suggested simply walking the 30 minutes, rather than waiting.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite

A1. Posting from the midwest. Its silly hot here this week, low 100s F/ 40C with good humidity, mostly switching my rides to early/late when possible.

#bikenitea #bikenitea1

@ascentale @bikenite #bikeNite A1. I am once again posting from my home in Northern New England. Yesterday’s weather was glorious, highs in the high 70s (ºF), dry and sunny. I took my bicycle downtown in the late afternoon to the hardware store for some home repair supplies and to my local NCG “co-op” to buy sake and beer for the weekend, and to test the smells of some essential oils for my amateur fragrance blending hobby. If I go out during the heatwave, it will only be at night, for food.

@ascentale @bikenite A1. Toots from Atlanta as usual. The weather's finally drying out a bit, but it's getting HOT. I need to go client side a bunch next week and I'm not looking forward to highs over 100F.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite #bikenite A1: Melbourne, Australia, where it's been a beautiful sunny winter's day. After visiting family I went for a ride up the Lilydale-Warburton rail trail ... Pleasant but had to head back early as I forgot my lights and sunset is about 5pm today!
@ascentale A1 Santa Clara, California , USA. I had Thursday off from work, so I took the time to put new tires on a new to me road bike and went for a 25 mile ride. First ride for pleasure in over a year; it’s been hectic with a new job. I was surprised how much softer the ride is on a carbon frame compared to my previous aluminum frame despite the same 25mm wide tires at 100 psi. Tired and sore, but in the good way. 70F-ish, I did not actually check the weather before heading out. #BikeNite
@ascentale @bikenite A1. Santa Clara, CA. It was pleasant yesterday, but a bit windy, late spring and summer is when the California Central Valley heats up and the much cooler air over the ocean rushes through the golden gate to replace the rising hot air. #BikeNite
