MarcFor the love of god can we stop anthropomorphising LLMs. No, ChatGPT did not "come up with an excuse" or "think about its mistakes". Gemini did not "lie about its reasoning" or "struggle to understand basic concepts". Grok didn't "decide to praise Nazis" or "express it's support for genocide".
They're mimics designed cynically to trick you into assigning them a humanity that they'll never have, and giving them false agency allows their designers and creators an innocence they don't deserve.
I dunno what happened but people now seem comfortable watching videos on their phones in public with the sound up.

@kottke I dunno. I think the mysterious work of the unconscious is undervalued by the hyper organized. I find I spend a bunch of time ingesting fuel- fiction, art, nonfiction, music, etc- and then I let my subconscious get to work on it. It pretty reliably finds ways to connect to my existing understanding for me.

The continued insistence in #highered that “AI” be integrated into *everything* is like handing a hammer to a toddler and telling them to go find things to do with it. Broken and dented shit everywhere.
