In & Out Burger was the first fast food chain to force employees to get a doctors note to be able to mask.

Panda Express followed & now we’re hearing that Starbucks may enact a similar rule.

If you stopped masking, you made this easier. We need visibility. We need to normalize masks.

@broadwaybabyto I would prefer that my food-prep people mask and hairnet
@howtophil @broadwaybabyto how are masks and gloves not standard requirements for food preparation anyway. I was happy during Covid to see them wearing those when preparing my food.

The Relative Scientific Simplicity Undergirding The Efficacy of Masks

@broadwaybabyto yes, all that.
And also, while I get it (it being all the "reasons" why our overlords wouldn't want masks), it's still astounding that our oh-so-superficial western world didn't jump on the chance to
style with an additional accessory.
@broadwaybabyto @ItsaMeWario As always it’s akin to swimming upstream. Look at all the places that are enacting mask bans, and you and I know that isn’t a coincidence. Sorry to be such a downer because I absolutely do agree with you.
@broadwaybabyto More businesses I will NEVER patronize.

@broadwaybabyto I quit my part-time job in the summer of 2021 when my boss decided that nobody had to wear masks anymore because Biden said so, but until I realized how gross everyone was going to be I was continuing to look for a new part-time job.

I kept seeing things in job descriptions like “the ability to smile at guests at all times” (I think that was a Hilton Hotel) and when a staffing agency emailed me about it out of the blue I replied and I pasted that exact line into the reply and I asked if this means that I would not be allowed to wear a mask on the job.

Their reply made me lol, because it was clear some kind of brain fog prohibited them from comprehending what they read because their reply said “There are no covid restrictions at all!” as if I would be delighted to hear this.

I just replied with a bunch of science links about how masks work and how dangerous Covid is. And thankfully they never contacted me again about any job ever.

@broadwaybabyto It's kind of nice that they are self-identifying where I will never shop again. I don't go to these places for other reasons, but it is another helpful reminder.
@broadwaybabyto oddly enough, Chick-Fil-A employees can still mask. I just saw a bunch of them last week.
@broadwaybabyto Soon, you'll need a doctor's note for a side of fries.
@broadwaybabyto That's ... very weird. Especially food places should benefit a lot from masked employees?
@broadwaybabyto

"you wear a mask? are you sick?"
"no but I don't want to get sick"
@trans_caracal
“I'm allergic to getting sick”

@broadwaybabyto I think Starfucks may provide some limited health insurance, but most fast food chains don't, so these employers are not only forcing workers to jump through ridiculous hoops for the right to choose how to protect their own health, they're telling people to go to a doctor when their business structure prevents them from having reasonable access to a doctor.
@broadwaybabyto And of course there are lots of minor temporary illnesses people get for which you would not normally seek medical care but the responsible course of action if you have to go to work in a job that involves face to face contact or food preparation would be to at least wear a mask to try to limit how much you spread it.

@PedestrianError @broadwaybabyto I worked for Applebee’s in the 90s and I remember being surprised and delighted they offered health insurance as long as we averaged 32 hours a week.

Then I realized it wasn’t really health insurance, I don’t remember being able to actually use it for anything I needed. Back then the only prescription I remember purchasing on a regular basis for birth control pills, and no insurance plan I had covered birth control pills until 2009 or 2010, so maybe that’s why I thought it was worthless insurance.

Being upset about worthless insurance being sold as a benefit by them was what motivated me to get out of restaurants and get a job where I could have real health insurance.

It was a difficult transition because I made a ton of money bartending, I could pay my rent with just a couple days worth of tips. But I really needed health insurance.
