In climbing, people use the noun "beta" to refer to the correct solution to a bouldering problem. It's polite to ask "do you want the beta?" before offering someone advice. I never knew where that came from till now, assuming it was related to the Greek alphabet for some reason.
Lynn Hill is a legendary climber who set lots of records and won loads of comps back in the day. She explains that use of the term "beta" comes from the format beta max - to get the beta is to watch the tape of the climb to know how to do it.
