Elon Musk and the right’s war on Wikipedia

The world's richest man has joined a growing chorus of right-wing voices attacking Wikipedia as part of an intensifying campaign against free and open access information.

Recent tweets by Elon Musk, Libs of Tiktok, Mario Nawfal, and others have claimed that Wikipedia is spending “$50 million for DEI”, misrepresenting Wikipedia’s actual budget and financial statements to claim Wikipedia is now “Wokepedia”.

#Wikipedia #ElonMusk #USpolitics #USpol

Then, Musk amplified an erroneous and months-outdated claim that Bill Clinton had been deleting information about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein from Wikipedia.

#Wikipedia #ElonMusk #USpolitics #USpol

Musk’s recent Twitter rampage reveals a man with a grudge against Wikipedia, looking for anything to support his position, regardless of whether it’s true. But why have Musk and others on the right chosen Wikipedia as a favorite punching bag?

#Wikipedia #ElonMusk #USpolitics #USpol

Attacks on press freedom and free expression have become commonplace, even among the right’s self-described free speech champions. But neither Trump, Musk, nor anyone on the right can control Wikipedia as they wish.

#Wikipedia #ElonMusk #USpolitics #USpol

The right’s frequent claims that right-leaning sources and viewpoints are “banned” on Wikipedia are also either misguided or intentionally deceptive.

#Wikipedia #ElonMusk #USpolitics #USpol

Most of Musk’s ire towards Wikipedia stems from his anger that articles about him do not repeat his own attempts to write his personal and professional history.

#Wikipedia #ElonMusk #USpolitics #USpol

Only after failing to rewrite his own history on Wikipedia did Musk’s criticism expand to broader complaints, such as Wikipedia’s supposed systemic bias.

#Wikipedia #ElonMusk #USpolitics #USpol

However, even many of his complaints about supposed widespread bias still boil down to disgruntlement at how he personally is covered on Wikipedia.

#Wikipedia #ElonMusk #USpolitics #USpol

Musk has occasionally brought up the question of why the Wikimedia Foundation needs such a large budget. (The Foundation’s annual budget for 2024–2025 is 0.3% of Musk’s proposed pay package, by the way.)

#Wikipedia #ElonMusk #USpolitics #USpol

There certainly can be reasonable conversations about whether the Wikimedia Foundation needs to spend as much as it does, and the community has these conversations regularly. Most of the conversations I’ve seen from Musk and allies, however, are not such conversations.

#Wikipedia #ElonMusk #USpolitics #USpol

Attacks on Wikipedia from Musk and his allies aren't just about an online encyclopedia — they're part of a broader assault on any information source that refuses to be controlled.

Also, don’t forget there are audio versions of all of my newsletters (100% real human, no robo-voice)! You can listen on the article page linked at the top of the thread, or in your favorite podcast player.

Molly White's Citation Needed

Keep up with the happenings in the tech world without all the boosterism. Cryptocurrency critic, technology researcher, and software engineer Molly White publishes Citation Needed, a newsletter that features weekly explainers of developments in the cryptocurrency industry, with summaries of the latest disasters featured on her well-known project Web3 is Going Just Great. She also does deep dives into important events in the broader technology industry, with added critical context that is too often missing.

@molly0xfff you voice them yourself?! Whoa!
Sadly I can't stand the fake-robo voices (at least most of em), so I finally can listen to some news-posts
@bison I do! I hate the robo-voices too, they’re too uncanny.
@molly0xfff articles like this are the reason I'm so happy you also record the audio version. It's fantastic for accessibility, and I'm sure that's your primary drive, but for me there's also something extra gained in hearing someone who is very knowledgeable talk passionately about a topic they care deeply about versus reading the text. Thank you
@molly0xfff that’s really cool. I had totally assumed it was a robot-voice reading because the UX matches what many big name publishers are doing. Might be worth calling that out in the caption underneath.
@molly0xfff thank you for everything you do in raising awareness for the open web, Molly! I just listened while making dinner.
@molly0xfff Thanks for mentioning this, subscribed! Seems you’ve been doing the recorded versions since Nov 2023. Did I skip the audio player without realising it every time?! Maybe it needs more visual differentiation, I’m used to these inline players being some 3rd party TTS widget so I must naturally scroll straight past. Could make the footer text more prominent + add a podcast icon (does a free one exist or does everyone just use Apple’s?)
@molly0xfff thank you for writing this, it’s been a very fun read! Will definitely be checking out more content from cn and considering what I can personally support with.
@molly0xfff great write up! I’ve been wondering why they were going after Wikipedia recently but didn’t want to spend the time looking into it.
@molly0xfff I had been meaning all this time to support Wikipedia; but better late than never. Thanks for the reporting as it is getting me to finally start a monthly donation to a project that's been around nearly my entire adult life.
@molly0xfff Wow, pretty sure I’ve seen your edits. Thanks for all your work!

@molly0xfff I did not realize you were GorillaWarfare. I respect your work but still disagree with your decisions around the Ars Technica Sakura Samurai / Robert Willis debacle, the article was not credible and should not be used as a reference. That said, overall your editing record is outstanding. I understood the decisions but it was one of those cases where discretion regarding a generally credible source was needed.

“Hacker X”—the American who built a pro-Trump fake news empire—unmasks himself

He was hired to build a fake news op but now wants to put things right.

@molly0xfff I don't get whats Musk's argument about Wikimedia spending too much. It is a private foundation, not a government institution that needs a cap on it's spending.
@auser @molly0xfff Argumenst don't matter - it's an Enemy Institution as far as he's concerned so he's just going to brainstorm whatever lines of attack he can against it to convince other rightwingers that it's a tool of whoever's running The Conspiracy this week.
@pstewart @molly0xfff Shit sucks. It's even worse that people that although ideologically opposite can't even make logical sense on their own beliefs for themselves.
@molly0xfff that's exactly it. Fascists rely on a populace losing faith in the notions of "truth" and "facts", so that the populace doesn't question all the fallacies and contradictions in what the fascists tell them. Wikipedia has become a good source for truth and facts that the fascists can't control, so the fascists want to destroy it.

@molly0xfff

Pour être franc, Musk m'intéresse à peu près autant qu'Hanouna. Mon intérêt pour ce type de personnages est proche du néant !

@molly0xfff the traditional complaint about bias on Wikipedia was that it's mostly written by white males from rich countries, exactly the people you'd think MAGA would approve of.
@molly0xfff Musk is a manipulator no doubt about it, but Wikipedia is very censored
@molly0xfff Wikipedia doing the good thing, now this is something that deserves donation
@molly0xfff He's probably working on X Pedia.
@molly0xfff He can get his nose out of Wikimedia. None of his business.
@molly0xfff Delaware Court of Chancery go brrr.

@molly0xfff This post is the Inception of alt text.

The main text is a summary of the image — of text — and the image’s alt text describes the text of the image and the alt text of the image — of text — in the image.

😵‍💫

@molly0xfff Is it this freedom of speech he claims to love so much?

@molly0xfff

Elon Musk is a very dangerous person and he needs to be stopped.

#uspolitics #uspol #fascism #wikipedia #musk

@molly0xfff Almost like science and truth in general is biased against the right
@molly0xfff they are intentionally deceptive. We can and should be blunt.
@molly0xfff destroying free press is the number one rule of a dictatorship; censorship and owning their version of the truth along with keeping their people uneducated enough not to oppose them are the steps that follow. Wikipedia happens to be a thorn in the side in both cases, it’s not surprising it’s in their sights.
@molly0xfff cuz he fears anything he can’t control

@molly0xfff My recent donation to #wikipedia was inspired in large part by #Musk being such a tool. I'd love to see Wikipedia outlast Musk's leadershit* at Tesla. Like many others, there's no way in hell I'd get a Tesla at this point.

*Not a typo ;)

@molly0xfff On the right, whining about restroom names became long of tooth. So, now Wikipedia is on the whining list.
@molly0xfff
Musk wants to control facts.
@molly0xfff I made a small donation just to spite Musk. There must be some self serving reason Musk is doing this.

@molly0xfff

It is
1. A voluntary human source
2. It is free
3. With no market interests.

@molly0xfff #elmo 's afraid of open source entities, Wikipedia (& #Mastodon for that matter) are way more "of the people " than x has become or will ever be
@molly0xfff the working class being educated is a threat to them
@molly0xfff they literally just want to establish control over information. that's it.

@molly0xfff

It is kind of scary how few prominent non-profit public interest projects there are on the internet. It wouldn't take much to shut then down 😦

We already saw archive.org shut down just before the US election, including its wayback machine that is often vital for fact checking.

We need more sites like this so that we aren't so dependent on each one.

ALSO: Streaming with DRM is putting posterity/history in the hands of the streaming companies, who can edit and wipe whatever they want. The only safe options are physical media & DRM-free digital media. If those disappear, piracy will be the only safe place for history.

@molly0xfff they dont like the truth
@Viss @molly0xfff my gut tells me we should be doin little research and check tesla's wikipedia traffic...
@molly0xfff 'Cause he is right 🙂
He suddenly give a perfect Streisand effect 🙂
@molly0xfff A great reminder that today is a great day to donate to Wikimedia.
