I am still seeing tons of articles in the mainstream media about how Democrats need to win back disaffected Trump voters. This is despite the data which clearly shows that Trump's vote did not increase significantly over 2020, but rather that Democratic voters voted in substantially smaller numbers.

I see no articles about how Democrats need to energize their base to vote, which is what the data indicates. The mainstream narrative is pure bullshit.

I should point out that the number one way mainstream journalists say Democrats should win back disaffected Trump voters is by abandoning progressive values.

@dgoldsmith

Economic values, cultural values, or both?

@dgoldsmith Sigh, that is literally the German Green Party's "strategy" right now.

Measured by the actual laws they're voting in favor of (as part of our recently imploded government), they're leaning hard to the right (anti-poor, anti-refugee, pro-deportation, pro-surveillance), in a bid for right-wing voters, who will never decisively vote for them anyway.

Meanwhile, an *army* of Green Party evangelists is flooding the zone with messaging about how, as a left-leaning voter, you *must* vote for their fucking party, or you're basically a Nazi.

Of course, none of these ass clowns can explain why, as a left-leaning voter, someone would vote for a party that is non-stop enacting right-wing policy. 😑

Added: And most of them seem to believe that the Green Party could even *win* the election ("Habeck4Kanzler"), which is a complete fantasy at this point.

@alxndr @dgoldsmith if you're too moronic to understand "because the other actually existing alternatives are much worse", it's not useful to waste one's time. Enjoy your CDU, Merz is definitely not as right-leaning as Habeck.

You privileged Western clowns don't even understand what you have to lose. Entitled crybabies.

@dgoldsmith the most people don't want this Right Wing nightmare and we're not being given any options. The media is complicit in this, people have made choices.
@dgoldsmith exactly, Trump voters are absolutely gone. You might get them to agree on a policy but they legit think democrats are their enemy & their goal is to punish them. It's like trying to convince a chemtrails antivaxxer moon landing conspiracy nut to come back to reality. Leave them in their hateful reality & get democrats & the couch potatoes energized, that's the only way forward.
@dgoldsmith democrats that stayed home on election day are clearly idiots. So if the party appeals to some trump voters then, well, I think its worth trying to appeal to idiots
@Bredroll Not necessarily idiots, but definitely misinformed, primarily by said mainstream media.
@Bredroll @dgoldsmith idiots, but maybe not for the reason many think. Rather, for refusing to vote because their own party failed to represent them, and they thought they'd have it better by not voting. Meanwhile the other idiots found themselves with a victory.
@dgoldsmith Democrats lost by campaigning to the empty middle of the political spectrum when we needed to move Left.

@gooba42 @dgoldsmith

It's not so complicated. Americans weren't ready for a Black Indian woman who campaigned 105 days for president. Let's face it, #Harris is not as charismatic as #Obama .

If we are still allowed to vote, Democrats will take the House and Senate in 2026 and the White House in 2028.

@Stinson_108 @gooba42 @dgoldsmith

> If we are still allowed to vote, Democrats will take the House and Senate in 2026 and the White House in 2028.

And if we have the last thirty years to judge, then proceed to do nothing so that the Republicans regain Congress in 2030 and the White House in 2032.

Obama ran as a progressive and governed as a centrist, and that's why Hillary Clinton's "more of the same" campaign lost. Biden ran as a progressive and governed as a centrist, and that's why Kamala Harris' "more of the same" campaign lost.

The Democrats would rather lose and support their billionaire owners instead of winning.

I pray to a god that I don't believe in that I'm wrong about this.

@firebreathingduck I've voted Dem since '74 and have pretty much been screwed over every time by do-nothing when elected candidates.

@dgoldsmith Democrats are rational and believe in the purpose of this country. MAGA is a mob with a lot people who think the US is a tribe defined by genetics, that demons are real, vaccines are poison, and that the purpose of this country is making sure they can buy what they want when they want it.

Not every Republican is like that but many are. They need repair, not a useless pitch from Dems.

@Corb_The_Lesser @dgoldsmith The GOPers who aren't as you described are just Riches hoping for another tax cut.
@dgoldsmith democratic voters are like herding cats
@dogpile “I belong to no organized party. I am a Democrat.” — Will Rogers
@dgoldsmith …….. perception is reality.

@dgoldsmith

Democrats need to shun Nazis. I have no interest in befriending horrible, racist people.

@dgoldsmith I think the mainstream media has very little beneficial advice to offer democrats or the Democratic Party
@wendinoakland I wish more Democratic politicians recognized that.
@dgoldsmith The fcking NYTimes did everything in their power to normalize TFG while crushing Biden (apparently because he didn’t give them the private interview they wanted). And still, they somehow remain the paper of record?
@dgoldsmith even that narrative is insufficiently informed by data. To fill it out a bit https://www.semafor.com/article/11/15/2024/democratic-turnout-plummeted-in-2024-but-only-in-safe-states
Democratic turnout plummeted in 2024 — but only in safe states | Semafor

In four battleground states, Kamala Harris got more votes than Joe Biden. Donald Trump grew his votes even more.

@dgoldsmith tl;dr they stayed home in states that were already sure things. Zero net difference.
@aardvark Zero in those states, but clearly not in the battleground states.
@dgoldsmith I looked at the total number of voters for Dem, Repubs, and others from 2004 onward. FUNNY, but when a WOMAN is the candidate for President, the number of Dem voters drops significantly (prior/next election). At first, I thought that Hillary lost because she was the most hated politician in America. But the pre election polls in 2024 showed a majority thought that a MAN who has more financial failures than most families have kids was MORE effective for the Economy! As a pollster, I would have asked a follow-up question - WHY? Ditto for National security! Because he was more interested in sharing national secrets?
@dgoldsmith IDK, that sounds like an actual winning strategy and not just a continued plan to push the Overton window for the capitalist class.
@Debbie Goldsmith 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈⧖ The simple fact that Harris didn't win by almost 100% means that way too many Americans don't recognize a fascist when he spits in their faces, or are in fact fascists.
@dgoldsmith I think the Democrats have been floundering by failing to realize one simple fact: the electorate shifted in 2016 toward populism. There are two kinds of populism: the racist, xenophobic, hate-filled brand that the GOP embraced with Trump. The other is Woodie Guthrie fighting for labor/disenfranchised and against large corporate interests kind. By being scared of losing the big money donors, the Democrats have tried to walk a line that doesn't exist.

@Jeff_the_Geek @dgoldsmith

AND #Drumph received about 30% of eligible voters' votes. That's not a mandate, and it certainly isn't a justification for calls to "move the Democratic party to the center."

To Jeff's points, what if #Harris had invoked economic "justice" rather than economic "opportunity?"

@dgoldsmith ...one, I believe, sure way to launch a up rocket of enthusiasm to vote up every Dem's arse, IF THERE IS A NEXT TIME TO VOTE, will be living thru the utter hell that will be years of trumpy-musky-magy authoritarian governance, as they watch their country torn down to the delight & laughter of the MAGA cult. More likely there will be no future Federal elections, real ones, anyway. Welcome to the Fascist States of America....where you'll have to live & raise your kids..
@dgoldsmith The 2-party plutocracy disfavors the American people.
@dgoldsmith I also understand the potential political value of not calling Trump voters dumb, but as a non-American it's like, lmao they're so dumb. I don't normally write about politics but I have so many insanely funny stories, including getting cornered in an airport by a hundred-millionaire who was 100% on the Pizzagate train.
@dgoldsmith
Democrats: Let's campaign with Bush, Cheney, and all the other establishment war hawk Republicans. Then we abandon all progressive policy and promise to increase funding for Israel, and then finally we pressure everyone into voting for us by calling third party/non voters fascist.
Americans: *Doesn't bother to vote*
Democrats: Did we not go right wing enough?
@dgoldsmith
Hindsight is 20/20, but I don't think the general strategy of beating fascists (everyone else join together to stomp it out and return to normalcy later) was off base when looking at history. Unfortunately, the remaining Republicans have fully embraced fascism and there are a bunch of weak willed non-voters who are glad to tolerate such a regime if it means sticking it to someone they don't 100% believe in
@dgoldsmith It's the same in the UK, where lots of people, especially young ones, don't vote because they don't feel like any party represents them. Yet both Labour and the Tories waste time trying to get back the people who've gone to Reform, even though they're people whose view are outliers and extremist compared to most of the population and most Labour and Tory voters.
@dgoldsmith It’s been known since at least 2008 that trying to gain the center is a losing strategy. Reporting on gaining the center is an intellectually dishonest argument.

@dgoldsmith so, 3 million Democrats saw the risk of Trump getting elected, escaping justice for the Jan6 insurrection, destroying the very concept of Rule of Law, and just decided to stay home? How does that make any sense?

One has to wonder how many of those missing Dem votes were actively suppressed.

@hyc 3 million Democrats (at least) didn't see any of that in the mainstream media and so didn’t care.
@dgoldsmith I guess we're f#cked then. Democracy only works with a well educated and well informed population. At this point disinfo is so easily propagated that we'll never have either of those.
@dgoldsmith But the single cat ladies, the Swifties. They were angry and energised. They were gonna do this. Where were they? Record youth vote registrations. Record early vote numbers. And then, still…..millions and millions of women across America went and voted #trump.
