NCHS estimates of #LongCovid—based on Household Pulse Survey—next update due April 18.

Activity limitations and significant limitations at highest levels since Oct 2022.

As more and more folk experience Long Covid, fewer and fewer have been staffing our hospitals.

Capacity Level has been elevated since independence from the virus was declared three summers ago—as fewer & fewer professionals have been available to staff hospital beds.

Critical Staffing Level, though down from 2023 high, has been well above 2022 lvl for over a year—w/ one in nine reporting hospitals at critical shortage.

Pediatric staffing never recovered to pre-omicron levels. Rather, now near enough one in five pediatric beds reported May of 2022: now missing.

PICU Capacity Level (not shown): 70%.

Weekly average ~70 PICU beds were covid patients.

We're failing our kids. The emergency is over.

Some 298 (-43) counties reporting pediatric care near or over capacity (≥ 90%).

Of 272 (-5) counties reporting any PICU capacity, over one in five are near or over full.

So many places where there ain't enough staff for sick or injured kids to receive required care.

"Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH)…continues to struggle daily with unprecedented overcrowding – particularly in its Emergency Department (ED)."

Statistics, as always, are structural.

Data reported to HHS don't include ED patients awaiting inpatient beds. Moreover, weekly data can easily obscure daily overcrowding.

If MGH can be in 16-month unprecedented crisis w/out ever topping 100% reported capacity, just imagine degree of crisis in hospitals ≥100%.

Some 46 (+7) counties are reporting ≥ 100% capacity per HHS data.

Reporting ≥ 90%: 217 (+7)—over 9% of those w/ any capacity.

This includes surge & overflow beds—near full can mean E/Rs with hours-long even day-long wait times.

For counties w/ ICUs—near one in six are full or near full.

To give a sense of how badly our #hospitals are doing: A friend went to emergency room recently. She had to be treated in her street clothes, because they were out of hospital gowns. But, you know, cases are down, so everything fine, right? #CovidIsNotOver

Occupied beds in excess of staffed beds indicates that patients are not receiving adequate care.

For comparison, Suffolk County, MA is at 93% adult hospital capacity, 89% adult ICU.

Mass. General—at 95% capacity/93% ICU—largest of some dozen Suffolk hospitals already 18 months into "unprecedented capacity crisis".

Sixteenth week of Pirola BA.2.86 grankid JN.1 wave. Per GISAID, entering April, easily three quarters of this is likely attributable to subvariants.

CDC breaks out JN.1.16 (~1% in GISAID), after JN.1.13 (~3%) & JN.1.18 (~7%); continues to muddy data with variants moot for months.

JN.1.4, not broken out by CDC, still near ⅐ of JN sequences in GISAID.

#ThisIsOurPolio #Covid #Covid19 #SARS2 #CDC #variants #CovidIsNotOver #CovidIsAirborne #WearAMask #BetterMask

Into April, JN.1 family has diversified sufficiently for designation of nine new pango aliases: KP through KZ (excl. KT); & six recombinants: XDD, XDK, XDN, XDP, XDR & XDV.

After starting to reemerge from GISAID dataset early March, non-JN.1 lineages are now all but absent. No doubt this is related, at least in part, to low reporting across states (next toot).

#ThisIsOurPolio #Covid #Covid19 #SARS2 #variants #CovidIsNotOver #CovidIsAirborne #WearAMask #BetterMasks

NY/NJ and Southeast regions fall off map due to insufficient reporting, leaving Great Lakes as sole reporting region.

JN.1.13 estimated 3.8% in Great Lakes region, JN.1.18 at 3.4%, JN.1.16 at 2.7%.

Nothing to compare it to, because state-level public health agencies have just stopped collecting sufficient data.

Folk are dying at record numbers, of comorbidities of severe acute covid that are also implicated as post-acute sequelae of covid infection. ↺

Of course, ongoing hospital staffing attrition also contributes to elevated death tolls. Said attrition continues. ↺

Given evidence linking covid infection to sudden onset liver damage, recent increased liver disease mortality's hardly surprising.

Final mortality data for 2020—released in Sept—reveals spike in accidental deaths driven by poisonings & exposure to noxious substances.

Per WHO, every 12 minutes four people die of acute covid. Three of those deaths are in U.S.

As of Apr 2023, for every three covid deaths, U.S. saw another excess death not attributed to covid.

Feb 2024 WHO & Economist estimates reflect same trend globally.

[Global advances two weeks as new data comes in.]

Here's hoping—as we learn of Dexter Reed's murder and Anthony Goulding's eviction, Nicaragua opens at ICJ, Urals flood, groceries are "splurge", Vatican doctrine anti-trans, Cass reports, British farmers want UBI, cow H5N1 renamed, House votes more FISA, Pelosi whips for genocide, DE police raid conference & arrest Jews, & Usians buy seized land—that all those reading this are having a week wherein they & theirs are putting health & welfare of those they love—and share air with—first & foremost.
@beadsland I understand there will be artefacts in this data because not every country is recording this data..... But for a country that has only 5% of the global population (7% of G20 countries), tracking 75% of all recorded Covid deaths is... an unfathomable choice.

@beadsland

I wish more people were aware of the extent to which nominally non-Covid mortality remains stubbornly elevated, perhaps then they wouldn’t be so cavalier about risking yet another bout.

Increasing risks of hypertension, cerebrovascular disease, circulatory disorders, accidents, sepsis, renal failure all sound like things I’d like to avoid.

@DavidM_yeg

As much as we might wish otherwise, health supremacism doesn't work that way.

For those who are #perquisitive #classposture heroes of their own health supremacist narrative, plot armor is taken as given. They're the good guys, thus good outcomes are guaranteed by social contract.

When such #FrosteanBargain genre convention ripped away, is far too late, as #disaccommodation classposture affords no do-overs—even as #GriefTaboo ensures they say nothing else be ostracized and shamed.

@beadsland
Hmm. I thought the American epidemic was contracting. What's happening?

@noyes

Good question.

Whatever it may be, it has been a windfall for the Usian sickworking industry (⚚aglithaculture), with over one in four new jobs over the past twelve months being in "health" care:

Over the past 12 months, healthcare has lead job growth, with three-quarters of a million healthcare jobs added across the industry, at the same time as hospital capacity (staffed beds) has remained stagnantly below 2020 levels: https://disabled.social/@beadsland/112203071626016864 Followed by local gov't, at over a third of a million jobs added, majority of which were non-education jobs. Leading non-education jobs in local governments (per 2022 Census): police and hospitals. So March job growth is healthcare & police. 🤔
