I took some time to think about the Ronna McDaniel hiring and firing.

The result is that I have written another blog post that has me going against the current.

https://terikanefield.com/the-ronna-mcdaniel-story/

If you get the error message, wait a minute and try again. It's Mastodon's fault! This doesn't happen with any other platforms.

Some news: I may be back in Nevada doing voter protection work with the Nevada Democrats after several cycles in Georgia. A little closer to home.

The Ronna McDaniel Story - Teri Kanefield

The announcement that NBC / MSNBC hired former RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel as a contributor prompted an “open revolt” by MSNBC “stars,” who went directly to their TV and social media audiences to denounce the hiring because (among other things) McDaniel supported Trump’s lie that the election was stolen. In response to the revolt, the network executives […]

Teri Kanefield

I think I changed my mind about wanting comments on my blog 😂

This one came from a subscriber. Oy.

(I removed her from the subscribe list)

@Teri_Kanefield what the hell - that comment is almost impressively dismissive and demeaning.
@Teri_Kanefield I really can't imagine anyone really finding you pro-MAGA. Oy is right!
@Teri_Kanefield Partisans on either side don't appreciate subtlety. They want click bait headlines and simple truths. It's like professional wrestling.

@Teri_Kanefield

Did they even read the article???

@Teri_Kanefield (I imagine a little dog chasing this person away dutifully)

@Teri_Kanefield 🤦‍♀️

I bet she's offended by your peppermint mocha latte, too.

@Stybba3019 @Teri_Kanefield I'll admit that was a bridge too far for me
@Stybba3019 @Teri_Kanefield I had some issues with that one too ...
But, it's easily solved by not making or ordering such a drink.
And leaving more for those who want that.
@Teri_Kanefield thanks the article is great. I keep hoping for a solution. How do we get good discussion and bring different views to the table? Are strong arm moderators with a team of real-time fact checker the answer? In Canada we’ve devolved to elected members who blindly follow the party line even when it negatively impacts their constituents. The leader and the party are sacrosanct.

@Teri_Kanefield Trying to wrap my head around “Your logic is sound but apparently your heart is not”.

“You’re bad for speaking the truth”?

@nazgul

Right. I took it as, "I see no flaw in your logic, but you are not slamming the people you are supposed to be slamming or repeating the approved talking points so you are not on our team therefore you are destroying democracy."

@Teri_Kanefield Today’s Oglaf rather nicely summarizes this approach to people who speak the “wrong” truths.

(Despite the 18+ warning, this one is perfectly PG. Just don’t follow any links.)

https://www.oglaf.com/wrath/

Wrath

@nazgul @Teri_Kanefield Or, maybe, "You're bad for speaking a truth I don't like"?

@Teri_Kanefield

Wow... uh...

You? a MAGAt? , *snerk* yeah right...

Some people are very special in some ways...

I am so sorry that there are so many exhausting people to deal with in the world.

My two cents: The Banhammer is your friend. :)

@Teri_Kanefield Sorry you have to deal with this. I thought your post was thought-provoking and full of good info.
@Teri_Kanefield Who knew that sound logic would make you a bad person??
@Teri_Kanefield Comments are seldom authentic. Typically, a chance to dogpile or just crap on someone else’s hard work. Disabling them won’t hurt your blog at all… might just keep your blood pressure down.
@Catawu @Teri_Kanefield Ignore the haters. He's likely a plant trying to demoralize you so you stop speaking truth. There really are people like that. Please don't succumb.

@Teri_Kanefield Don't you mean you changed your big beautiful brain about wanting comments? 😉

Seriously though, it was a really good article as usual, Teri. You reminded me why I didn't miss any of those accounts once I moved away from Twitter.

@Teri_Kanefield holy crap that's rude :(

I wanted to leave a comment on your post, but article was so detailed and depressing, I was lost for words by the end of it. I think "Burn it all down" would have covered it, but not been appreciated by you :)

Nothing personal to you - just anything to do with the media and the GOP tends to make me feel that way, and Ronna is just such a horrible, dishonest person.

@Teri_Kanefield
I was busy reading @dougjballoon 's New York Times Pitchbot account, and wondered how you got into the mix.

Some people are just ... special, aren't they?

@Teri_Kanefield I look forward to your insight and thought provoking arguments. Thank you.
@Teri_Kanefield this looks one of those drunk-texts I used to send years ago before I got sober. Pay no attention, but yes de-subscribe
@Teri_Kanefield If this was in response to your Ronna McD blog, it does seem a bit off balance (the reply, not the blog). I just finished reading the blog and, as usual, it was clear, concise, and didn't inflame me. I don't watch cable news, so this topic is always interesting to me. Thanks for clearing up a lot of what I missed.

@Teri_Kanefield

Nailed it Teri. Thanks for taking the time to put your thoughts into black and white.

@ewen

Thank you for this. I just muted a bunch of hate on another site :)

@Teri_Kanefield
"Firing a Republican after she made a plea for people to get out of the echo chamber and listen to each other seems problematic to me."

But MSNBC is full of ex-republican pundits and hosts including an ex-rnc chair. No symmetry on Fox to that. This is a shift I expected when I saw demographics change. A lot of R's will migrate and pull D further right. That's what Lincoln project is. That's why Liz Cheney is welcomed there. The D establishment wants business as usual.

@alper @Teri_Kanefield

Or, the Democratic establishment wants to work with everyone on #TeamDemocracy to #DefendDemocracy.

There's been little if any change in the laundry list of policies Biden ran on in 2020. Child tax credit restoration, more climate crisis actions, bolstering the care economy, voting rights ...

The only exception is the tactical move to undercut GOP attacks on immigration, which I agree with Anat Shenker-Osorio is the wrong move (see her Rolling Stone op ed).

@Teri_Kanefield

I resent you believe that people worried in the US about fascism are gullible. I refuse to "be reasonable" about people who planned, abetted, & supported Trump, a man who is determined to destroy US democracy. McDaniel supports 45. McDaniel is a fascist sympathizer.

Polarization is a myth. #ProDemocracy RW, Center, & Center Left haven't changed their PoV at all. The GOP Party has been radicalized.

Please read academic Thomas Zimmer's work on that: https://thomaszimmer.substack.com/p/the-treacherous-allure-of-the-polarization

The Treacherous Allure of the “Polarization” Dogma

On the limits and pitfalls of a narrative that obscures more than it illuminates – A Manifesto, Part I

Democracy Americana
@beccanalia @Teri_Kanefield Sorry, Bec, but it appears that, not only did you not read Teri’s analysis closely or with an open mind, you did not read much of Zimmer’s essay. Had you, you’d realize that he does *not* say that ‘polarization is a myth’. In fact he specifically says polarization exists, citing examples and pointing to a long history of ‘polarization studies’.

@Teri_Kanefield It’s a good explanation, and helps me understand why I’ve never cared for MSNBC’s commentators, even when they were right.

I do wish you had a one paragraph tl;dr at the start though. No receipts. Just “liberal media does this too: they said this happened, this is what actually happened. This is normal stuff.”

I think the people that need to hear it are glazing over before they get to the bottom.

And I say this with all the love and support of someone who writes huge posts that are far too long, and then spends hours shrinking them down to large posts that are still too long. At one job I literally started adding tl;dr’s to my email messages. It helped.

And yet, here I am at over 700 characters already.

@nazgul

I understand and I thought about that. For one thing, I spent way too long on it.

On the other hand, I just felt the need to document what I was seeing this past week to explain why I think it is broken.

Also, listening to Rachel Maddow literally turned my stomach. How do people not see through it all?

@Teri_Kanefield @nazgul

Oof.... what did Maddow say? I thought I could respect her...

@woozle @nazgul

I gave a summary in the blog post.

@Teri_Kanefield @nazgul
oops, my bad for skimming. Will reboot eyeballs...

@Teri_Kanefield @nazgul: Excellent question. I have friends who swear by Maddow, but she's not reporting on events, she's entertaining them. I think for many it's a serious case of confirmation bias. They agree with what she's saying, so they "like" it even though it enrages them. The cable talk shows certainly have that psychology down.

My question is will we ever be able to fend off the whole echo chamber phenomenon exacerbated by the information disruption we're living through? In all of it, truth is the casualty, and without enough people living in the real world, well, democracy is in danger.

Everyone needs to read your book - and I really hope the people who desperately need to the most will.

@nazgul @Teri_Kanefield
I bet this kind of thing is also behind the repeated accusations against Biden of being a war criminal for aiding Israel (when in fact, from everything I can tell, he's doing an excellent job of podracing the treacherous ravines of international diplomacy involving a powerful ally gone bad).

Somehow, we've got to do better.

@Teri_Kanefield Very helpful breakdown. The difference between a journalist and a commentator is especially important. Reminds me of the comment about how it’s interesting that there’s always something happening important enough to be on the front page of newspapers. I don’t mind some commentary, especially on the most infuriating occurrences. But I want to base my opinions on facts, not on someone else’s opinions. I don’t trust other people to be clear-headed enough!
@Teri_Kanefield (Not that I don’t outrage, but that’s in part because there are outrageous things happening!)
@Teri_Kanefield one thing that some people also fell for during this is that someone mentioned that NBC fired executive "Jack Donaghy" who was a "major donor to the RNC"

@Teri_Kanefield I don't have a problem with contrary opinions, I have a problem with bringing in people whose political strategy has been to lie about their own opinions and motives. The entire GOP operation, of which she was a leader, does not exist to promote honest ideas.

It's another case of awarding someone with a job when they should be one of the last people on the list.

@Teri_Kanefield
It seems to be acceptable to say things that are not true and even float conspiracy theories as long as the pundit offers an emotionally evocative performance of partisan identity.

I see your point. But on at least one level I think you miss a point. McDaniel was a player in post election maneuvering, including the fake electors. She might seem like a nice Republican mom from the suburbs, but she is an insider in that scheme.

@Teri_Kanefield I think it's important to remain focused on the framing of the McDaniels hiring as being an attempt by NBC News executives to fuel more partisanship.

The idea that she was there to provide nuance seems laughable.

NBC execs wanted her and wanted her on MSNBC bc they knew she would create outbursts. Viral moments where the outrageous things she said mixed with the righteous anger of their liberal celebrities and exploded.

@Teri_Kanefield Thanks for all your posts. I find you very informative and interesting. I saw again you mentioned the 500 error your blog gets when you post to mastodon and found in a different post somthing that might be helpful? https://fedi.simonwillison.net/@simon/112186000767358271 Looks like he caches that with cloudflare in a later reply.
Simon Willison (@[email protected])

@[email protected] Huh... it looks like it's the Mastodon effect, where sending out a link causes thousands of Mastodon servers to all hit /.well-known/webfinger?resource=acct:[email protected] at the same time - but I've survived these storms just fine in the past, not sure why it's hurting the site today

Mastodon
@jimmynash I'm pretty sure we tried that and it didn't work !!
@Teri_Kanefield
Standing against the current of over-sensationalized narrative is what we need right now. Thank you for your service.

@Teri_Kanefield being less than reverent towards and entralled by Maddow is gonna bring you some complaints ...

but, yes, those purveyors of outrage are destructive. Even if they're "on our side". Perhaps especially when.
