Let My People In: The Story of Immigration in the U.S. - Teri Kanefield

My sixteen-year-old Chilean nephew was curious about what’s going on with ICE. In Chile, the word “conservative” is associated with capitalism, and the word “liberal” is associated with communism. He observed that Donald Trump says he’s a capitalist but doesn’t act like one. I told him things are different here and labels have different meanings because […]

I could see he was curious, but I knew he had no interest in lengthy history lessons, so I said, “I can do it in 15 minutes. I can give you a 15-minute history lesson that will explain ICE and our current politics.”

“Can I use a timer?” he asked.

I said certainly.

I prepared the lesson, and my nephew started the timer.

Are there any librarians here with time to read something I wrote?

PM me.

😂
I learned that some people are using AI to generate a summary of my book!

I therefore decided to compete with AI by writing my own summary, which I am calling Over the Cliff Notes.

The Over The Cliff Notes are here:

I also linked to them on the main page:

But nobody ever reads just the Cliff Notes, right?

Over the Cliff Notes - Teri Kanefield

How Intolerance and Extremism Happen: Understanding our Deepest Divides   OVERVIEW This (short) book is based on the idea that the first steep to bridging our deepest divides is to understand those divides. PART 1: DEMAGOGUES AND ARTISTS Demagogues and dictators (a subset of demagogues) frequently lead extremist movements. They often enjoy widespread popular support. […]

For the book, I hired a copyeditor and proofreader, but errors kept creeping in because I had to manually enter the corrections, and sometimes I could swear my keyboard is haunted.

Mostly I depended on people who supported what I was doing and helped me out.

Thank you, to everyone who helped.

No surprise: I found all the helpers on Mastodon.

After more coffee (with caramel and chocolate because I do it right) I'll put this thread on other sites.

Thanks, everyone.

I recorded each episode a few times because I kept getting ideas for how to better present the material. When I finished, I sent the series to a sound engineer because I hated how I sounded. He performed his engineering magic, and it definitely sounds better, but, well, am I the only person who dislikes the sound of my own voice?

If you prefer to listen instead of read, you can find the YouTube series here: https://www.youtube.com/c/TeriKanefieldAuthor

I’ve written more than a dozen books and lots of articles, essays, stories, and appellate briefs. I hold a law degree from the University of California at Berkeley, a master’s in English with an emphasis in fiction writing from the University of California at Davis, and an undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania. My legal and political analysis has appeared in The Washington Post, CNN.com, NBC, and other mainstream news outlets. A list of my publications is here. My book prizes include the Jane Addams Book Prize, Carter G. Woodson Middle-Level Book Award, 2015, and California Reading Association Eureka Silver Honor Book. For twelve years I maintained a private appellate law practice limited to representing indigents on appeal from adverse rulings. I believe that democracy requires each of us to contribute. I also believe, with John Updike, that the purpose of literature is to expand our ability to sympathize.

I imagined I was speaking to a lecture hall filled with undergraduates who would rather be somewhere else.

That wasn’t difficult to imagine because one of the courses I taught before law school was basic college English composition. Very few students show up on the first day thrilled about English composition.

When I talked into the mic, I had to get my imaginary classroom’s interest, and I had to do it with words because breaking into a tap dance, under the circumstances, wouldn’t help.

“Why the heck did it take you 2 months?"

Once I started looking closely at the long blog post, I saw ways to improve it. I made stronger connections. I revised passages. I moved things around. I looked for better words.

You know, the kind of things writers do compulsively for hours, days, and weeks.

As part of the process, I “talked” the ideas into a microphone. I used the blog post for lecture notes. . .
