Movie #1: Dream Scenario

This is a thread I’ve done 2 times before, sharing short reviews of every movie I watch in a year. My goal is to watch about 100 movies this year.

Movie #2: Blockers
Movie #3: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

It's 17 minutes, but I'm counting it since this is how long films were in the very early days.

Movie #5: Spring Breakers

A24's first release wasn't great…

Movie #6: Memento

Minor spoiler in the review text if you don't know the general setup for this film.

Movie #18: Looper
Movie #19: Dune

Movie #20: Big Trouble in Little China

If I know anything about doing these reviews, giving an 80s movie an "okay" score is going to go over poorly 😛

Movie #40: Madame Web

Reminder that I don’t believe in “I know it’s a bad movie but…”

I had fun, but I totally see why if it doesn’t click, you’re gonna hate it.

Movie #41: Godzilla Minus One
Movie #42: The Fist Omen
@matt do you have any affinity towards the original Omen trilogy? Curious as a fan of those
Movie #42: Anyone But You
Movie #43: What You Wish For
@matt very excited to watch tonight for the first time!
@tchaten I think you’ll dig it!
@matt agree, really enjoyed this one
@matt And yet, an undeserved fx Oscar (unless the true reward was the best budget/results fx in a movie).

@ideimos Who would you have given the award to?

Not disagreeing, as the effects had some lower technical quality bits, but artistically I thought it was great.

@matt this could be improved with some padding.😄
@matt saw it last week, loved it! Started reading up on Japanese overacting afterwards. 😅

@matt

What’s this bit about then? I don’t get it.

@matt Did you ever watch Benedetta? Incredible Paul Verhoeven film that continues to ratchet up making for a very satisfying finale -https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6823148/
@matt It never clicked with me that this was Spielberg! One of my all-time favorite films.
@matt One of my favorites!!! I get very teary most times watching this one - amazing John Williams soundtrack too!! Amazing to hear him play with jazz and saxophones the way he does. So glad it clicked with you too!
@tchaten Oh yeah, this is at least the 3rd or 4th time I’ve watched it over the years, so I knew I’d at least like it. It had been over a decade at least though, so I wasn’t sure how well it would hold up…very happy that it did 😁
@matt I keep getting Facebook reels of this movie. Worth the watch?
@bennusekabel I thought it was good! If you have even a passing interest in cars or racing, I can't think of many better ones in recent years.
@matt Can’t believe you’ve watched three Godzilla movies, none of which are Minus One! 🤷
@ravi It's not available anywhere! 😭
@matt Nothing compares to Peter Jackson’s King Kong gets me all teary every time - have great nostalgia for that one too watching the online video journals he released during production
@tchaten I remember liking that one!
@matt So glad to hear that! You could tell Peter Jackson had a similar respect for the source material for this one as he did the LOTR.
@matt didn’t enjoy this one either, and still going to give the new one a shot 😂
@matt You finally got to see it! 🥳
@nileane FINALLY! Got to see it in IMAX too, which was definitely worth it.
@matt not to mention the epic sound design and score .. saw it today, that stood out the most for me.
@mako Absolutely! The music is great and there’s nothing like good sound design absolutely rocking your seats in a theater.
Hans Zimmer will tour US for first time in 7 years, hit 17 cities

Hans Zimmer will tour the U.S. for the first time in seven years, playing concerts in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle and more.

USA TODAY

@matt You want epic sci-fi that’s not Marvel? Foundation on  tv+. Truly amazing.

Plus @mako, the S2 score is something special. It topped my listening “chart” last year.

@michaelrjohnson @mako I’m actually finally making my way through that as we speak! Halfway through S1 and I wouldn’t say I love it, but it’s definitely good stuff.
@matt @mako That’s fair. S1 has some great world-building and character definition, but plot-wise is a bit uneven. S2 is a significant improvement all around.
@matt curious what your Villeneuve ranking would be. If that’s not too difficult

@brzz Oh boy, gut reaction would be:

Blade Runner 2049
Dune
Sicario
Dune 2
Arrival
Prisoners
Enemy

And I like them all 🙂

@matt nice. Blade Runner tops mine, too. Modern classic
@brzz Honestly that one seemed like it was impossible to make something respectable and he nailed it.
@matt loved it too. Most enjoyable in a dolby cinema, the sound on this one is 👌🏻
