Quick Reviews

Movie #12: American Fiction
Movie #13: The Family Plan
Movie #14: Beverly Hills Cop
Movie #15: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Movie #16: 21 Jump Street

Movie #17: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

This is the sort of thing that makes me a Star Wars fan.

Movie #18: Looper
Movie #19: Dune

Movie #20: Big Trouble in Little China

If I know anything about doing these reviews, giving an 80s movie an "okay" score is going to go over poorly 😛

Movie #21: Wonka
Movie #22: Godzilla (2014)
@matt With „Good“(Wonka) „Okay“ (Big trouble) you are really asking for the latter.
@fleg haha I've definitely learned doing these reviews that there is no more controversial review I can post than saying an 80s or 90s movie is anything less than amazing 😝
@matt You’re right, I disagree with this rating! :) It hit me when I scrolled up and saw what you gave Beverly Hills Cop. Rating these movies with today’s sensibilities is kind of unfair? I feel like Cop, especially, was a big deal in its time and probably broke new ground, but none of that is obvious today. It would be like criticizing Star Wars for mediocre plot and special effects. True, but…
@matt This is not to say your ratings are wrong or you should feel differently, but it’s hard to contrast these movies with 2021 Dune and feel like it’s a fair fight.

@DavidAnson So it’s an interesting question and it’s something I do try to be mindful of when watching anything. There’s definitely something to be said for watching something in its time that you just can’t get watching the same thing decades later.

That said, I don’t think movies invariably get better as time moves on, and some movies have a more timeless quality than others. Kinda like how some jokes are always funny, while others “you had to be there.” if that makes sense.

@matt Can’t wait to rewatch in 3D in Apple Vision Pro!
@matt I’m so excited to see the sequel
@matt Rewatched it this week too and still had the same impression of appreciating how incredibly well made it is, without loving it.
@matt don't think I've seen this one!
@matt Still really want to see this. Never get around to it because it’s not on any of my streaming services.
@NateBarham If you like Rian Johnson, it’s worth every penny 😀
@matt the best. Did you like Creator? I’m a huge Gareth Edwards fan now, with those two he’s shown so much of what I miss in sci fi: new visions and characters.
@matt This is *the* best individual Star Wars film.
@matt Hands's down, my favorite Star Wars movie. (I've only seen the first of the new trilogy, & none of the other, newer stand-alones).
@matt What’s nuts about this one is that the entire Vader ending was a last minute addition apparently? And that there was a change in directors or something midway through? Incredible save. One of my most rewatched Star Wars films.

@joshginter Oh wow, I actually didn’t look up any trivia about this one, but that’s wild. I just looked up more deets and it sounds like Tony Gilroy came in and rewrite & reshot nearly half the movie.

Didn’t Ron Howard take over Solo midway through as well and have to save that one? The behind-the-scenes drama of making Star Wars films seems like a lot.

@matt definitely one of my favorites of the more recent movies
@matt Weird, must have missed something. Remember being annoyed throughout this movie about how useless it felt.
@matt yep … best of all theatrical releases. (Along with 4-6) it’s really all they needed.
@matt Matt I’m leaving my 2 hour viewing window in your hands, which am I watching and why- The Marvels or the new Aquaman??
@jasonrak haha well I haven't seen either Aquaman, so I don't know how good those are...I can't recommend any of them stongly 😂
@matt Regarding your app, is there a way to automatically pull in the image from a third party? I like the idea but I usually don’t want to take the time to copy paste the images
@matt Dr. Richard Kimble did not kill his wife!
@matt What app are you using to generate this review graphic?
@amerpie Sorry, I should call it out more often. https://isfeeling.social/@matt/111684135598451292

Feeling Social
@matt going to rewatch this myself as it's one of my absolute favourites of all time.
@matt Was my favourite film for a long time. Still right up there and one of Nolan’s best
@matt Oh, I should rewatch this! The only time I’ve seen it (loved it, btw) was so long ago.

@matt This is my favourite film. This review is *EXACTLY* how I feel about the film (except I watch it a couple of times year). Have you read the short story it’s based on?

Memento Mori

Two brothers had an idea for a story. One brother turned it into the most original movie of the spring, Memento. The other wrote this short story."What like a bullet can undeceive!" --Herman Melville

Esquire
@matt Spring Break...Spring Breeeeeeaaaaaak....Spriiiiiing Breaaaaaak forevaaaaa.
@matt Naturally a rewatch of Hugo is next?!
@tchaten Maybe! Hugo is underrated for sure.
@matt Definitely try to watch other films by Méliès. They are amazing. Quite the pioneer!
@Granneman Oh yeah, he was a genius! I took a bunch of film classes in college, so I’ve seen a bunch of his stuff, but it’s been quite a while…
