If I know anything about doing these reviews, giving an 80s movie an "okay" score is going to go over poorly 😛

Movie #23: Dune: Part 2
Movie #24: Godzilla vs. Kong
Movie #25: Kong: Skull Island
@matt didn’t enjoy this one either, and still going to give the new one a shot 😂
@matt You finally got to see it! 🥳
@nileane FINALLY! Got to see it in IMAX too, which was definitely worth it.
@matt not to mention the epic sound design and score .. saw it today, that stood out the most for me.
@mako Absolutely! The music is great and there’s nothing like good sound design absolutely rocking your seats in a theater.
Hans Zimmer will tour US for first time in 7 years, hit 17 cities

Hans Zimmer will tour the U.S. for the first time in seven years, playing concerts in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle and more.

USA TODAY

@matt You want epic sci-fi that’s not Marvel? Foundation on  tv+. Truly amazing.

Plus @mako, the S2 score is something special. It topped my listening “chart” last year.

@michaelrjohnson @mako I’m actually finally making my way through that as we speak! Halfway through S1 and I wouldn’t say I love it, but it’s definitely good stuff.
@matt @mako That’s fair. S1 has some great world-building and character definition, but plot-wise is a bit uneven. S2 is a significant improvement all around.
@matt curious what your Villeneuve ranking would be. If that’s not too difficult

@brzz Oh boy, gut reaction would be:

Blade Runner 2049
Dune
Sicario
Dune 2
Arrival
Prisoners
Enemy

And I like them all 🙂

@matt nice. Blade Runner tops mine, too. Modern classic
@brzz Honestly that one seemed like it was impossible to make something respectable and he nailed it.
@matt loved it too. Most enjoyable in a dolby cinema, the sound on this one is 👌🏻
@matt I for sure am curious about your take on the 1998 Godzilla movie - I’m very nostalgic towards that one
@tchaten @matt There is no 1998 Godzilla movie. Nope. Nooooo.
@flargh @tchaten haha yeah I would say it’s unlikely I revisit that one. But we’ll see if I get the bug to watch a bunch of Godzilla movies!
@matt @flargh I wonder if 98 Godzilla would hit more for you than Jurassic World Dominion lol
@tchaten @flargh It’s a low bar but I am quite confident it could do it 😂
@flargh @matt Aww such a 90s classic lol
@matt With „Good“(Wonka) „Okay“ (Big trouble) you are really asking for the latter.
@fleg haha I've definitely learned doing these reviews that there is no more controversial review I can post than saying an 80s or 90s movie is anything less than amazing 😝
@matt You’re right, I disagree with this rating! :) It hit me when I scrolled up and saw what you gave Beverly Hills Cop. Rating these movies with today’s sensibilities is kind of unfair? I feel like Cop, especially, was a big deal in its time and probably broke new ground, but none of that is obvious today. It would be like criticizing Star Wars for mediocre plot and special effects. True, but…
@matt This is not to say your ratings are wrong or you should feel differently, but it’s hard to contrast these movies with 2021 Dune and feel like it’s a fair fight.

@DavidAnson So it’s an interesting question and it’s something I do try to be mindful of when watching anything. There’s definitely something to be said for watching something in its time that you just can’t get watching the same thing decades later.

That said, I don’t think movies invariably get better as time moves on, and some movies have a more timeless quality than others. Kinda like how some jokes are always funny, while others “you had to be there.” if that makes sense.

@DavidAnson On the Star Wars thing, if I ever criticize a 40+ year old movie for having poor visual effects compared to today, I’ve jumped the shark, stop me!

If the story is boring though, that’s more timeless IMO. FWIW I think Star Wars has a great story told well, which is a big reason is the most culturally significant piece of media created in the past 50 (100??) years 😁

@matt No arguments there! My comment about special effects is a little broader, though. Imagine trying to make Jurassic Park 10 years earlier or 10 years later. It would be a very different movie in either direction purely based on the quality of the special effects that were available. We are spoiled these days because anything is possible, but filmmakers decades ago had to work within tighter constraints. Dune 2021 vs Dune 1984 is a good example: same story, very different experience.

@DavidAnson Absolutely. I do think about Ghostbusters vs Ghostbusters (2016) or or new Star Wars vs old Star Wars as examples of newer *looking* better, but most people would agree the older ones were better.

I guess it all comes down to art being subjective. Hell, my mood that day can change how I respond to a movie! I thought Mad Max Fury Road was kinda blah the first time I saw it, but rewatched it last year and was like “this is remarkable!” 😝

@DavidAnson Also I gotta figure out how to better communicate that “good” means I liked a movie (maybe even a lot). I’m surprised how many times I give something a “good” review (like Beverly Hills Cop) and people are surprised how I reviewed it so “low”. I liked it 😂
@matt The Axel Foley movie is Great and I will not be taking questions. :)
@matt Can’t wait to rewatch in 3D in Apple Vision Pro!
@matt I’m so excited to see the sequel
@matt Rewatched it this week too and still had the same impression of appreciating how incredibly well made it is, without loving it.
@matt don't think I've seen this one!
@matt Still really want to see this. Never get around to it because it’s not on any of my streaming services.
@NateBarham If you like Rian Johnson, it’s worth every penny 😀
@matt the best. Did you like Creator? I’m a huge Gareth Edwards fan now, with those two he’s shown so much of what I miss in sci fi: new visions and characters.
@matt This is *the* best individual Star Wars film.
@matt Hands's down, my favorite Star Wars movie. (I've only seen the first of the new trilogy, & none of the other, newer stand-alones).
@matt What’s nuts about this one is that the entire Vader ending was a last minute addition apparently? And that there was a change in directors or something midway through? Incredible save. One of my most rewatched Star Wars films.

@joshginter Oh wow, I actually didn’t look up any trivia about this one, but that’s wild. I just looked up more deets and it sounds like Tony Gilroy came in and rewrite & reshot nearly half the movie.

Didn’t Ron Howard take over Solo midway through as well and have to save that one? The behind-the-scenes drama of making Star Wars films seems like a lot.

@matt definitely one of my favorites of the more recent movies
@matt Weird, must have missed something. Remember being annoyed throughout this movie about how useless it felt.
@matt yep … best of all theatrical releases. (Along with 4-6) it’s really all they needed.
