A couple of weeks ago, the European Broadcasting Union (#EBU) asked us to write a guest article about our experience with #Mastodon / the #Fediverse, explain the basics, and point out the advantages.

Challenge accepted. πŸ‘

So here's the finished post by @lxplm, hot off the #blog press. ⌨️

Public Broadcasters of Europe, Let's All Join Mastodon!

In this guest post, Alexander Plaum, Innovation Manager at Deutsche Welle (DW), writes about his team's exceptionally positive experience with microblogging in the Fediverse. He also explains why all public broadcasting professionals should try out Mastodon.

@dw_innovation Hey, next step - Deutsche Welle's own server?

@lxplm

@drq we'll see who's server get more attention, DW or BBC :)

@dw_innovation @lxplm

And another journo gets it wrong again.

@tallship What do you think they get wrong? There are other (significantly lower) estimates of the number of users on Mastodon (or the Fediverse ???) than the one referenced in that article but other than that I thought it was all pretty reasonable.

I look forward to DW setting up their own instance.

@dw_innovation @lxplm

@dw_innovation @lxplm Nice summary of where we’re at πŸ˜€
@dw_innovation @lxplm I think a reluctance exists because people have forgotten how to actually be social in a non curated sense of self. To actually make friends with strangers online, or to actually take the time to be part of a community by engaging with people on a level that may be less parasocial.

@rotfarm thank you πŸ’―

I wanted to hear that from someone again. This is the reason for me and all what fediverse is about that I'm advocating to people for.

@kahakai I think there's a level in de-escalating yhe ways that social media takes space in our lives, both as a viewer, and a user. I don't think it's an easy flip at all. It's not flashy, the people aren't either. We are just being little weirdos by ourselves and with eachother lol.
@dw_innovation Since you're posting mostly articles, do consider (cross-)posting to #lemmy as well, as it's way more set for these sort of posts. You can even post in to lemmy from mastodon by @-ing the community you want.
@db0 @dw_innovation is there a @FediTips explaining this?
Fedi.Tips (@[email protected])

Years ago I used to recommend a Fedi platform called Lemmy. However, in 2021 some very disturbing stuff about Lemmy's developers came out which totally changed my mind. Because of this, I did a thread to warn people about Lemmy and then never mentioned them again. Today a mod on this account's old server deleted the 2021 thread, without any explanation but apparently by mistake. If you're looking for the thread, it's on the Internet Archive: ➑️ https://web.archive.org/web/20230603001819/https://mstdn.social/@feditips/106835057054633379 #Lemmy #HumanRights

@mapache @db0 @dw_innovation @FediTips As you can see this rabbit hole can get a bit deep but some search terms which might be a bit more promising are: #Threadiverse #Kbin #PieFed #sublinks . This part of the Fediverse is a bit less well developed than the microblogging part but there has been a lot of activity in recent months and I have every reason to expect further development (both technically and in terms of things like moderation tools and standards).

@mapache @db0 @dw_innovation Lemmy works similar to guppe groups, if you are posting to them at least, by mentioning the group handle

Following a Lemmy community from Mastodon unfortunately will fill your feed with any comment posted to the group :/

I’d love to either find or make a project that cleans up following Lemmy communities on other fediverse platforms tho

@grant @db0 @dw_innovation I know! I subscribed to a memes thread, and altho the memes are nice, the comments were adding a lot of noise to my feed so I decided to unsubscribe.

@dw_innovation @lxplm read and found this interesting and positive. Followed you as a result.

@dw_innovation @lxplm I do not see this post in LinkedIn! I would like to repost it!

DW Innovation and the EBU will probably post/share this tomorrow or on Friday (there's a schedule).

Traditional, centralized, for-profit social media are a problem. We all know why. Sure, there are more civilized platforms (like LinkedIn) and outright…

Hallo@dw_innovation
@dw_innovation @lxplm thanks for this excellent summary! i work at a large public university and will share this as i try to convince them to jump here from ex-Twitter πŸ‘πŸ½

@dw_innovation @lxplm

Reminds me of a reddit-post where a smallish game developer noted that while their game sold a fraction on linux than it did on windows, 95% of bug reports came from linux and almost all were applicable to improving the windows-version. Better yet: the bug reports were detailed and easy to replicate.

So they upkept the linux-version not for the sales, but for the feedback that allowed the improvement on Windows -- which in turn led to sales.

@dw_innovation @lxplm Wonderful post. emerging social media platforms are a difficult beast but Mastodon really is one of the best, with the best community I've found since the days of the dial-up BBS. It's inspiring and hopeful, and platforms like DW are vital to its success, so thank you for the report.

@dw_innovation @lxplm

That was a switch I wasnt expecting. Glad to have you here.

@dw_innovation @lxplm great article, I hope it gains traction and resonates with a wider audience.

@dw_innovation @lxplm Interesting article!

I've been lobbying Norwegian public broadcaster NRK for a couple of years now and have mainly been met with a lack of interest.

I think the main reason is that they see it as "just another twitter wannabe" and I have been unable to communicate what ActivityPub means.

I.e. "you don't have to be dependent on anyone else's infrastructure. You can set up your own server in your own domain and people will follow you there" doesn't register.

Oh well!

@dw_innovation @lxplm Hmm... what I've been trying to sell in is almost exactly what you say in the last paragraph there "The Mastodon Moment" (tried to link directly there but there was no id or anchor on the element to link to. Maybe an idea to make that section directly linkable?)

@steinarb @lxplm this post could be a good reason for NRK to give it a try.

On the other hand, DW doesn't seem to have an account here, only @dw_innovation

@nazar @lxplm @dw_innovation I first tried lobbying NRKBeta, which used to be the equivalent of dw_innovation.

Thought it would be right up their alley, but no luck yet.

https://nrkbeta.no

NRKbeta

@steinarb @lxplm @dw_innovation and how popular mastodon among Norwegians?

@nazar I honestly don't know. πŸ™‚

I am the only one I've met that has talked about it in real life and I know about a handful of others.

So probably not very popular (or "known" for that matter).

I wonder if there are statistics out there?

@steinarb people usually create accounts on local servers. I've found this instance but it seems to be offline:

https://icedtux.no

But I think there should be more of them.

Mastodon

Mastodon instance from Norway, open to everybody.

Mastodon hosted on icedtux.no

@nazar Oh there are several servers.

Biggest one is https://snabelen.no/explore I think.

But there is also https://oslo.town/explore and probably others.

(but I don't know much, if anything, about them)

snabelen.no

Ein norsk heimstad for den desentraliserte mikroblogge-plattformen.

@dw_innovation @lxplm Great blog post! I agree that more broadcasting companies should join. I for one would really like seeing more European companies, especially. Being Swedish myself, I wish SVT (Swedish Television) and SR (Swedish Radio) would join and post about news and events, but even better if YLE, DR and NRK joined, too (unless all/some of them already did) πŸ™‚. I only see random, unofficial bot accounts trying to fill that gap right now.
@Arcticulate does NRK have mastodon account? Another toot above says they aren't here. At least, officially

#quote | Β«A lot of Mastodoners also seem to be very tech-savvy (or geeky), and – as an NDR social media manager famously said – "nobody really cares about football"Β».

no football? i'm in, gimme two!

Do you know if there will eventually be a dedicated instance for media companies and journalists?

@torspedia @lxplm

Good news: They already exist. :)

Two prominent examples:

Journa.host

The server for working journalists and news outlets on Mastodon. Home to active & retired journalists, media scholars, and a variety of news and journalism adjacent professionals. #Newstodon

@gsymon @dw_innovation

Thanks.

Looks like somebody at EBU HQ changed the URL. :)

I just fixed the link.

@dw_innovation @lxplm Broken link, it seems: β€œGeneva, we have a problem!”…

@dw_innovation @lxplm

" an NDR social media manager famously said – 'nobody really cares about football' "

Football = tribal / right-wing
Mastodon = community / left-wing

In short, it defines humanity.

As long as money doesn't get involved (and many will try) it will remain a community.
