“My god. The weapon is armed, the countdown has begun, and the only known copy of the override code is stored on this old Nokia 5510 with an empty battery. We’re doomed.”

“Everybody chill the fuck out. I got this. Just gotta crack open the old cable drawer. Here you go.”

“You have a Nokia 5510 charger, but why?! That phone hasn’t been sold in over 20 years!”

“Let’s just say, I always knew this day would come.”

“Wow. Your decision to never throw away cables just saved humanity honey…honey…time to wake up honey…”

@SecureOwl As someone that just moved, I can feel this with my soul. “Just in case”
@SecureOwl I think my wife has this dream every night...
@SecureOwl I'm reading this while staring at a data cable for a Siemens S35 phone lying on my desk (the cable, not the phone).
@SecureOwl “I know it’s here somewhere”
@SecureOwl and more importantly after saving the world you can sit down and have a nice game of snake
@SecureOwl Cable drawer. Hah, such amateurs. At least two liquor store boxes of cables, because you never know. Iomega Zip Drive? I've got you covered right here.
@SecureOwl
I have crates of old chargers and wallwarts. I daren't dispose of them because one day...
@SecureOwl Mastodon bot idea: Every day it writes a post similar to this but every time it's a different old phone or a different old connector needed, and people would boost the post around until they find someone who had that connector who then replies with an image of it.
Maybe someone can even keep a score 😁

@SecureOwl I kept an old 5.25" floppy drive for years, just in case such a moment came to fruition and somebody desperately needed to get files off an old disk.

I was the hero nobody needed.

@analogfusion @SecureOwl this whole thread is giving me anxiety about finally turfing my floppy drives last year. 😂
@SecureOwl I feel personally attacked by this post (because I have such a charger and I know exactly where it is) 😅
@SecureOwl that's absolutely hilarious, you made my day!
@SecureOwl “noooo, I was just about to tell them that the same drawer also has a real hardware 56k modem they could use for the DEC Alphastation they have in a corner!”
@bss @SecureOwl
I've got a genuine Hayes 9600 V.32bis waiting for its moment…
@SecureOwl and here I'm, I don't even through the boxes away, like what if, I need to read up the manual of a 10 year old phone :D
@SecureOwl I’m dying!! My wife gets so annoyed with me about the cables I have stashed!!!
@SecureOwl @JoshHrach I feel seen. Of course, that has happened a few times at work. We do have a lot of legacy equipment hanging around. Parallel printer cable, anyone?
@SecureOwl Could happen, right? Best play it safe!
@SecureOwl I am just about to throw away all my VGA and DVI cables and adapters. Am I crazy? What if VGA cables are worth their weight in gold in a few years, when important systems that still use VGA or DVI need new cables?
@SecureOwl Heh. I just pawed through my cable collection the other day because a friend forgot his. Lol!
@SecureOwl
😂
But would you find it in time between the 617395543 (micro) USB cables 😉?
@SecureOwl power cable? we have the data cable for that device

@SecureOwl

Same but in my case it's multiple boxes up in the loft. Just got to get past all these cluster flies and the arachnid ecosystem that they support.

@SecureOwl That's precisely why I've got this huge box of ancient cables and electronics in the attic 😁

@SecureOwl I've got half a dozen 5-pin midi cables here, but can't work that into a world-saving scenario...

[Digs further]

This IE1394 FireWire cable however...

Ooh, and a scsi-to-analogue video cable. That'll come in handy...

Hmmm that cable to connect a landline handset to it's base... Why do I have 4 of these?

Now I'm crying

@SecureOwl More likely the world will blow up while I'm spending hours searching through boxes of obsolete kit trying to find the cable I definitely know I have...
@SecureOwl I found my old Sega Dreamcast in a box in the garage, and thankfully its very obscure AV cables were nearby too. Otherwise it would have been a piece of junk. Still boots, and saved games in the controller’s memory card still work too!
@SecureOwl It will be easy with Nokia and its quite standard 2.5mm plug.
If it happens to be old SonyEriksson with this crazy flat 'thing' (cannot say plug, it wasn't plugged into phone, more like attached to it) it would be different story...
Even if you get the cable, phone contacts probably get tarnished, so you need few extra minutes to scrap it with needle.
BTW, I have new devices (not phones) still using same 2.5mm plug as old Nokias.
Yes, I also have at leats one SonyEriksson cable, that has absolutly no imaginable use, somwhere in my drawer. Why are you asking?
@SecureOwl
I started giving away some of my cable collection, but only where redundant. Mostly giving away my myriad USB Micro-B cords. XD
@SecureOwl calling me out like that smh
@SecureOwl For real though, I have a set of packing cubes containing all kinds of cables, separated by approximate purpose (audio, video, USB, power, etc) - has already bailed me out several times and tamed the tangle in the cable box!
@SecureOwl I am *soooo* here for this.
@SecureOwl Should have been the plot of The Cable Guy.
@SecureOwl sounds like the "man's drawer" sketch by Michael McIntyre 😁
@SecureOwl I knew it! I’m not the only crazy person who can find a Nokia charger in his drawer with closed eyes!
@SecureOwl I may have to print this out and tape it to the door of The Closet of Obsolete Tech.

@SecureOwl Y'all laugh, but I'm reminded of a guy who cleaned out his cable drawer thinking he'd never need any of it again and like 2 weeks later found an otherwise useful retro device without its cable.

Which is to say, *grabs cable drawer protectively and hisses*

@SecureOwl

Yeah. But McGiver would have been able to piece a charger together from some Christmas tinsel, Chanukah geld and a dreidel.

@SecureOwl

You old enough to remember Mil Millington?

@SecureOwl i kind of feel like this is mean?
Not sure why though....
@SecureOwl
Every single time I need something from a stash I keep and it justifies all my other stashes, I add a cable to my cable filing cabinet
@SecureOwl Me in my tech junk closet: "Hold my beer" *rumages past 20 mb mfm hard drive and pcmcia cards.
@SecureOwl @jankhambrams Have you been reading my dream diary again?
