I would like to request a “hug” button on Mastodon that I can tap when someone posts something sad or emotionally delicate, for when there are no words and tapping a star seems like a weird thing to do.
@squeevening Hey, that’s a nice one!
@sebastianmalloy it's on my android phone, but I couldn't find it on the desktop mastodon in chrome.
@squeevening Looks like Apple has one too on the phone 🫂
@sebastianmalloy Yay, your wish has been granted! :-D
@sebastianmalloy : that's actually a good idea. I don't know that it's vastly different from posting a hug gif or a heart emoji (my go-to options) but it might be the beginning of a virtuous cycle.
@ladyteruki I think I’m just kind of looking for a way to normalize being nice to people online, you know?
@ladyteruki @sebastianmalloy yeah, part of the reason I never implemented reacts on my blog software was that I wanted to encourage a little more context on the comments, and I think I need to take this as a reminder to be more profligate with "❤️hugs❤️" responses.
@sebastianmalloy This is why I love the  emojo. It would make a great icon for this feature. <3
@Rheall I hadn’t even seen that icon until today! I’m terrible at thinking in emoji.
@sebastianmalloy might as well request emoji reacts, which several others already have
@sebastianmalloy I usually use a black heart for those; but I like your idea.
@sebastianmalloy I was able to emoji react with a hug emoji on my instance. Does that not show up on Mastodon?

@calvin It isn't showing up on my end. Maybe it's instance-specific or something?

I appreciate the effort though!

@sebastianmalloy @calvin definitely instance specific - but it at least demonstrates that it is possible.

@calvin
Your instance is a "pleroma" instance which allows emoji reactions.
Mastodon reads them simply as a fav

@sebastianmalloy

Pleroma - Join the Fediverse

@calvin @sebastianmalloy No, emoji reactions are a thing in misskey/pleroma and maybe some mastodon forks, but not a mainline feature.

@mxk @sebastianmalloy ah, okay, thanks. I know that Pleroma is like Mastodon Lite ™️, so I thought for sure Mastodon would have it.

I use such a feature all the time in the various chat apps that I use.

@sebastianmalloy Some of the other Fediverse servers have implemented federated emoji reactions instead of just stars. FireFish, Misskey, and (I think) Akkoma all support it. Who knows, Mastodon might soon if it isn't in the works already!
@sebastianmalloy 🖤🤎🩷🩵🩶🤍❤️🧡💛💚💙💜💟
@sebastianmalloy One reason why I use #Firefish instead of Mastodon. Problem is, when I react, it goes through to Mastodon as a star 😅
@mark I just added a hug too! 😺 (but yes sadly it will be seen as a star )

So much to love about Firefish, but the reactions are definitely one of my favourites. The time I posted something personal and somebody reacted with a hug rather than a star - it made a real difference to my mood to feel them expressing that emotion.

Agree with
@sebastianmalloy - would be nice if Mastodon introduced reactions too, not just stars! Sometimes a star just doesn't convey the right feeling, and sometimes even feels really out of place.
@sebastianmalloy You mean something that provides a  🤗 or similar like #SupportiveHugsIfConsent ?
@sebastianmalloy At such moments, I've settled for, "no words, sending compassion." Feels inadequate but it's something.
@ChristineMalec @sebastianmalloy and sending 'thoughts and prayers' has been greatly devalued by Republican politicians.
@sebastianmalloy
Someone will complain that you hugged them without their consent. Otherwise: Nice idea.
@sebastianmalloy interestingly, other Fediverse platforms do have emoji reactions.
@oblomov @sebastianmalloy and we need better hug emojis all we have is this very close one 🫂 or 🤗 ... 😬 .. I like the care one FB because it's used can be pretty diverse
@sebastianmalloy yes, as it always seemed weird to click 'like', on the other site, when someone posts something emotional.

@sebastianmalloy Aye. There are lots of things I read that I do NOT want to 'like' or 'favourite' and don't particularly want to boost, but nevertheless want to be able to say to the poster 'you have been heard'.

It would not be difficult, either from a software or a UX point of view, to have a range of simple responses.

@simon_brooke @sebastianmalloy

> want to be able to say to the poster 'you have been heard' <

Easy.

Just respond to the post using a private message containing an emoji such as 🙂 or 👍

@sebastianmalloy a star means all those things to me -
Appreciation of crafted works
Acknowledge that I read something
Sending a wishing star to a person who could need a wish

It's a person to person communication here. It's just me saying to someone, that I see them, feel with them or appreciate what they wrote .

@sebastianmalloy In the words of Seamus Blackely, ♥️🤜
@sebastianmalloy @Gargron c’mon how about the full suite of reacts!
@sebastianmalloy
Switch to #MissKey it's still part of the fediverse, and lets you use emojis instead of just the star
Akkoma

@sebastianmalloy At first glance it seems a silly request, but you’re right. Something that expresses comfort & empathy.
@sebastianmalloy I use heart emoji a lot for this. I'm not much of a hugger in person either.
@Lotje I was more of a hugger back pre-COVID, but ya know.
@Lotje @sebastianmalloy I have always wanted an “I feel ya” or “I hear ya” button - some sort of sympathetic emoji face (not a hugger either).
@sebastianmalloy Firefish has this...you can react to posts with whatever emoji you like without having to post said emoji as a comment. Hopefully this will come to Mastodon in a future version.
@sebastianmalloy I’d like to be able to react to posts like in Slack.
@sebastianmalloy There's no less than 11 different hug emojis on this implementation of Firefish, plus that weird smiling-with-both-hands-palm-outward emoji, which I think means "oh how lovely!" or something.

👇
@sebastianmalloy Oh and in case you can't see them, here are the reactions to your own post. Four of them are hugs! 😁
@BarrenPlanet Excellent! Thanks for the screen cap.
@sebastianmalloy It would be nice. I'd like the "favorite" button to be changed to an "I see you" button... but I doubt that will happen.
@sebastianmalloy Let me give you a Miiverse "Yeah!" on this post.

@sebastianmalloy

All the misskey derivatives let you react with all kinds of emojis! ActivityPub counts all of them as a Like, but the misskeys at least show you what the reacts were.

firefish, and there's another derivative that I can't remember the name of.

@sebastianmalloy Misskey and its derivatives (Calckey/Firefish) have this capability. you can actually react with any emoji you want for the occasion. I think Mastodon rejected the proposal to do so because it'd be "confusing" (and probably "not in line with the professional brand" or whatever)

@AmyZenunim @sebastianmalloy akkoma (pleroma fork) has this as well.

Baseline pleroma has reacts but it limited to unicode emoji, with no instanc ecustom emoji
