@njudah absolutely outstanding, yet cursed
@jef @katieonviolin @njudah makes me feel old to point this out but there was a time when a used HP printer was a wonderful find. Ah but that was many years ago, & long before the war, to crib Stan Ridgeway.

@FeralRobots @jef @katieonviolin @njudah

I have an HP LaserJet 2100 that I bought in the late 90s that still works. Outlasted my first marriage.

@funcrunch
Must be before they started coding obsolescence into their machines.

I bought a printer at a Goodwill about ten years ago when I traveled for work all the time. Use it a dozen times or so before actually connecting it to the Internet. When I finally did that was the end of it. Never worked again. Hard for me to believe that it just broke as it was fresh out the box and only stopped working after its first update.

@FeralRobots @jef @katieonviolin @njudah @merileedkarr

@noyes
Oh man, HP used to make bulletproof, obsolescence-proof stuff. They were known for it, almost INFAMOUS for it. It earned them rock steady stock price increases year over year up until the dotcom/tech booms, when rock solid 15% growth wasn't good enough anymore. That's approximately when they went to the dark side.
@funcrunch @jef @katieonviolin @njudah @merileedkarr
@FeralRobots @jef @katieonviolin @njudah they were outstanding, and then the internet took off in the mid 90s and they decided to target the cheap masses as well, and then just a few years later it was all crap. brother laser printers ftw!
@rabcyr
IIRC that was all happening around the same time that HP shareholders decided that an unbroken, decades-long record of steadily increasing value wasn't enough - HP was a failure because it hadn't achieved overnight 1000% increases in valuation along with petfood.com.
@jef @katieonviolin @njudah
@FeralRobots their pro grade lasers are still decent. but I wouldn't touch any of their inkjets or consumer level lasers.
@njudah @katieonviolin @FeralRobots @jef I have a Laserjet 5P from my wife’s office which opened in 1993 or so. It is our main printer at home. Change the cartridge about once every other year or so, Connected by a little print server that has a parallel interface on one side.
@Bobsee @njudah @katieonviolin @jef
I installed a bunch of those print servers here & there over the years. I think they haven't fundamentally changed since mid-90s, though I'm sure they use faster (& cheaper) ethernet chipsets now.
@jef @katieonviolin @njudah Whenever I print from the staff room, I have to chant "This is our HP printer, there are many like it but this is by far the worst."
@njudah some people see a heartwarming human moment, and others see a darkening world of corporate hegemony
@datn @njudah why not both
@datn @whitequark @njudah A heartwarming darkening human moment of corporate hegemony?
@jeroen94704 @datn @whitequark @njudah a heart-darkening human moment of corporate hegemony in a warming world
@datn Exactly! It's great that people help each other, but linking a device like printer to online account is still disturbing😅
@njudah
@datn @njudah painstainkingly, we wrestled a piece of what should be ours anyway into our own posession. What a beautiful moment...
@datn @njudah what do you see?
@valadoms @njudah if I couldn’t see both, I wouldn’t have been able to make the post.
@datn @njudah It's kinda like those articles "6 year old sold lemonade to fund their mother's cancer treatment". On one hand it's heartwarming, on the other it's fucking dystopian ...
@datn @njudah Printer software has always been cursed. It was a Xerox printer that pissed off RMS so much he started the GNU Project.

@njudah

Tolle Nachbarn, aber scheiß HP

@njudah For @ai6yr because I thought for a moment that this might have been him - before I checked the location!
@njudah Amazing it wasn't smashed to pieces
@duckswithpants Yeah there are a lot of people with HP printer rage stumbling around any big city. You could probably raise a tidy sum for charity by having a "smash an HP ink printer with a sledgehammer" event.
⚒️ 🖨️

@ratgrrl @duckswithpants

You know that when it becomes popular, HP will sponsor it and insist that decent printers from Brother are smashed. That's after they change the EULA to ban users from smashing HP printers. The 'printer smashed' error sends and bills you for 10 years of ink that's coded to that printer.

@ratgrrl @duckswithpants There's a place in Oban, Scotland, where you can do this! "rage room", iirc.
@njudah
Isn't that how life should be?
@OutOfExile_IDR_Voice @njudah yes. I would like to live in that world.
There is hope for humanity.
@njudah So one is not really the owner of a tool now...
@njudah I will never buy another HP printer. My parents got latched into the monthly charge scam system they set up. They hit 100 pages for the month and my dad had to increase the monthly price so they could do more. Ridiculous.

@njudah wtf #hp literally does an account-based #DRM on their printers?

How's that even legal??

Thx for the info!

Now I know to never buy that shit ever...

@kkarhan @njudah they even have an account based online DRM for the ink

@Aglaia89 @njudah WTF!?
So people can't even sell their used ink??

Okay, that's it!
#Inkjet printers are now 100% #Scam at best if not #ReducedLifecycle-based, intentional #eWaste and every retailer selling that shit in lieu of #Toner is complicit in the grift!!!

Ink Cartridges Are A Scam

YouTube

@kkarhan @Aglaia89 @njudah

It's why I recommend anyone looking at inkjets to "save money" consider investing just a small bit more to get a black and white laserjet, something from like Brother or something. They're less than a hundred dollars more expensive but the toner doesn't expire and the printing is 10 times faster and 100 times sharper as long as you don't need color.

@orangejuche @Aglaia89 @njudah

Even colour versions like some WorkCentre are fine since toner can't dry up, they have a long support lifetime, can connect to literally everything and are just pleasant to use.

Not to mention that if you look at office surpliers, refurbishers and espechally on eBay, you'll get them for absurdly low prices as good working & used models...

In fact, I never saw them at MSRP - not even new!

@orangejuche @Aglaia89 @njudah And for those people that don't have the money to do that, their print volume is so low, they might just drive to the next copy- or printshop in the next town and get that PDF printed there since that's more economical than paying €€ for a new printer or €€€ for new ink.

@orangejuche @kkarhan @Aglaia89 @njudah Colour laser isn't that expensive either

@katrinatransfem @orangejuche @Aglaia89 @njudah

Eeyupp....

I've never seen one pay the MSRP for a Xerox WorkCentre, and often they're like half of that.

Also those devices are built to last so you can easily get a 10-20+ yr old laser printer and the manufacturer will likely still have drivers for current OSes or at the very least support something like "Print from Network" or "Print from USB"...

@katrinatransfem @orangejuche @Aglaia89 @njudah

Worst-Case you get some 90s hp LaserJet that you've to hoopup via Centrocics to USB adapter to on a @Raspberry_Pi #RaspberryPi or other Linux SBC and set it up as network printer...

@orangejuche @kkarhan @Aglaia89 @njudah ❤️ my Brother printer.
@derickr @kkarhan @Aglaia89 @njudah I absolutely stan Brother printers, never had issues with them in over 10 years of using them, meanwhile HP was a mess and xerox was expensive when it broke.
@orangejuche @derickr @kkarhan @Aglaia89 @njudah This. My #Brother DCP-J125 #printer is now 12(!) years old. It still prints, and there is still ink for it. Best purchase ever.
@Aglaia89 @kkarhan @njudah this is why I'm clinging to my printer as long as possible

@lori @Aglaia89 @njudah The only reason I still have my #DeskJet6122 up and running is because it refuses to die and it's ink cartridges refuse to dry up.

@kkarhan @Aglaia89 @njudah I have a Canon MP250 printer/scanner and have yet to have a reason to replace it. And it has taken an absolute beating over the years (and has some puppy teeth marks now too). I would definitely not give it up for weird ass DRM ink.
@lori @kkarhan @Aglaia89 @njudah I have a canon tank based printer and I was very particular about not getting any of that DRM shit it's so ridiculous

@himbovoorhees @lori @Aglaia89 @njudah

I'm just gald that #hp stuff works with everything out of the box - including even ancient and latest #Linux distros...

The only machines with better compatibility are #NeedlePrinters and #Xerox #WorkCentre Laser machinces, cuz those even come with #MSDOS, #OS2 and #Unix drivers for obscure stuff like #Solaris 7.x #HPUX and #AUX...
