Nikki Haley recently said how life was so easy back then...we can get there again if we vote them out blah blah blah or something like that.

I remember needing my husband's signature for a credit card.

I don't want to do "back then" again.

Let's make sure it doesn't happen.

@Skepticat Back when Nicky wouldn’t be allowed to immigrate.
@Skepticat
When conservatives say things were better "back then", it seems to me that they mean their childhoods when they got served and taken care of by people they didn't have to pay a living wage to.
@GreenFire Maybe Nikki yearns for the days when women served in "traditional" roles. Just so long as she doesn't have to, of course.

@GreenFire @Skepticat

When they were carefree children. Full stop.

@Skepticat "Back Then" she couldn't have run for office...or..you know...had a job.
@ShredderFeeder bingo! We could actually work, but just be quiet and don't make any waves. Our pay was always minimal.

@Skepticat and you had to be open to the random groping from time to time...

Maybe that's it...maybe she's longing for the days when someone might want to grope her?

@ShredderFeeder always the groping. It was disgusting. In the 70s, I took off one of my heels and hit my supervisor upside the head while he attempted to sexually assault me. Needless to say, I was fired.
@Skepticat Good for you. Good thing, that's not a job you wanted to keep long-term...

@Skepticat @ShredderFeeder

But don't forget to smile, π‘Œπ‘œπ‘’'π‘Ÿπ‘’ π‘ π‘œ π’‘π’“π’†π’•π’•π’š π‘€β„Žπ‘’π‘› π‘¦π‘œπ‘’ π‘ π‘šπ‘–π‘™π‘’!

Ugh..

@Skepticat @lisamelton
Since we know, and they admit, Republicans aren’t progressives, that can only mean they’re regressives. Americans should not be made to be afraid of the future. Growth requires change.
@Skepticat If it was so easy back then, she could change her name back and see how popular she is with her fellow Republicans, eh?
@Skepticat Right! I remember trying to close and open new bank accounts after my divorce, and they wanted his signature. Despite him not being on the account, and it being my business account. I literally had to call an attorney to get my money back. I swear before Bob that I will start a guerrilla group of cranky crones to save another generation from becoming chattel.
@MissConstrue
I will always resist! And yes, I recall the checking account bs too.
@MissConstrue @Skepticat It wasn’t until recently that I realized that my grandpa’s name was still on the utilities at my grandma’s house because they divorced in the 70s and it was probably a giant hassle for her to have her own accounts.
@Skepticat agreed! It’s bad enough that when my wife and I apply for a loan it’s automatically my name first and when I joined her credit union, my name went first on the account and.... yeah, keep moving forward, not back.
@Skepticat . I remember being told I’d be let go from teaching if I got pregnant.

@makkhorn @Skepticat My maternal grandma eloped out of state and kept her marriage a secret for 6 months so she could finish out the school year instead of getting fired from teaching.

My paternal grandma eloped because my grandpa didn't want her to go to college and meet somebody else.

No effing thank you on both counts.

@Skepticat @lisamelton as late as the 1990s, my first wife was told I had to approve for her to use our joint account.

Like 1996.

If she thinks those days were so great, ask her why she uses an Americanized version of her name.

@Skepticat

In college I worked in the Sears credit office. A couple could both be listed on a store credit account but the only way the wife could get any info was if the husband gave his approval/permission. This was over 40 years ago and I knew how wrong it was then. Now I want nothing to do with the Repub/evangelical version of society. They want a dystopian state. I want more justice for all.
#VoteBlue

@Skepticat even as the husband who would have to sign, and thus my wife would be more a slave if I wanted, I knowenough how it really was to not want to go back. Sure I could have a slave, but computers cost millions of dollars, and used tens of thousands dollars of electric per month (prices not inflation adjusted). Things were simpler, but that is because there were so few nice things to have at any price.

Then again, as I told my girlfriend (now wife) I'm not looking for a slave.

@Skepticat I remember being a teacher, and having to buy a car in my husband’s name, because I β€œdidn’t have enough credit.” I made the house payment and paid utilities.

@Schfinkes @Skepticat

That hasn't changed.

Private institutions have no obligation to lend you money if you don't have a record of paying it back.

@royaljim @Skepticat I forgot, I had purchased a motorcycle years before, and the house was supposedly in both our names. Texas was bizarre back then. 1994.

@Skepticat

Guessing your birth certificate has a place for your father's occupation, but not for your mother's occupation as well. That's how mine is.

@Skepticat yes EXACTLY. It wasn't all that fantastic for a lot of people.

@Skepticat

Nikki Haley is rabidly anti-union just like planet frying oil industry donors & gets her campaign funding from coup plotters

Plus Nikki Haley has a decision making disorder. She flip flops on Trump.

@Npars01 @Skepticat Nikki Haley is awful. Just read anything she's said in the past ten years.
@Npars01 @Skepticat The RWNJ base is going to vote for Trump unless bows out to serve his sentence. Even without Trump, if they knew her name is really Nimrata they'd never vote for her in a million years, but MAGAts are the poster kids for "low-information voters" so they just know what Fox and Newsmax and Russian twitter-bots tell them.
@Skepticat You don't have to. She can go right back to primordial ooze.
@Skepticat strange how none of them talk about how one income was enough "back then", healthcare didn't take all you spent your life building "back then", What an education or a house cost "back then". They only refer to back then when it retracts rights we acquired over time. She knows nothing about "back then".
@TAI @Skepticat 'Back then' we were what today's right would consider socialist, as far as economics for blue collar workers who could with steady work own a home, be sole bread winner of family of four, and send a kid or two to the state college. That is, if you were male. The wealthy paid taxes through the nose. Far cry from today.
@TAI @Skepticat Today's right will beat down women, LGBTQ and BIPOC, lift the rich up on a pedestal, and do NOTHING to raise taxes on the rich, make college affordable, encourage unions, make home ownership achievable. They will take us to the bad place.
@Skepticat
Mom remembers how nice it was to finally get on the pill.
@Skepticat I remember a simpler time, when the HIV virus was identified and Ronald Reagan made jokes.
Now -- SHOCKINGLY -- is better.
@Skepticat they are already giving police access fo high school girls health records. This is no back to anything that ever happened before. This is "de-rights"ing women in society.
@Skepticat
The semantics , twists and turns of the jungles predation is a mixed bag. It's the twists and turns, stacking of any times system foundations where the people perpetually lose. One thing has gone ahead thru it all- Minority pig Wealths standing and security. An ever expanding gangster that demands the public whole sings of it under terms that it is humanities cause.
@Skepticat it's weird that the same people who want to go back to a "better" time never talk about the 70/80/90% tax rate for the rich that funded all of the biggest socio economic investments into our society the country had ever seen, they always forget that one. It's almost like they are dewey eyed for the violence and oppression of minorities & women, but not the thing that actually did improve vast swathes of the population & built the infrastructure we still rely on today.
Janel Comeau (@[email protected])

if we’ve brought back global pandemics, titanic disasters, railroad strikes, a King of England and Russian coups, we should also get to bring back the parts of the 20th century where they had cocaine in the soda and a minimum wage earner could buy a family home

mas.to
@Skepticat
Haley was not referring to the need for womenfolk to get their owner's consent to pass wind or own a credit card, she was talking about owning slaves, lynchings and burning witches.
@Skepticat the crowd she is trying to appeal to loved the rules they built around white supremacy and the colonial systems of stealing resources from everyone they could and then selling the country out to China and Vietnam. β€œThe greatest generation β€œ that pulled the ladders up from everyone except their entiteled kids.
@Skepticat It is so much easier when you can be openly racist, sexist, homophobic and ignorant.
@Skepticat conservatives want to go back to a time when everyone knew their place, when there was no integration, women stayed home and did not work, blacks stayed at the back of the bus, child abuse, spousal abuse were not talked about, cancer was a taboo word. There is a lot of sentimentality over the 1950s when white men controlled the purse strings and no one took issue with it.
@Skepticat Remember during the census, the "Head of household" had to be a man? I had to argue with them relentlessly because I've ALWAYS been top $$ earner in my household. I'm the effing head of my household!!
@Skepticat Yeah, life was pretty easy for me too when I was four years old.
@Skepticat You notice the parts they won't bring back is the ability to support a family on a single blue collar workers salary? Or strong unions?
@Skepticat the gop is nothing but criminal garbage. They don’t want the country to be great, these Christofascist farkokte assholes want the majority of people to shut the fuck up. They don’t actually care about going back to anything, because what they want never freaking existed.

@Skepticat

Thank you to all the women who came before us .. let's keep working for all the women coming after us.

@Skepticat We can't go back, our situation has changed. The population is bigger, technology is different, and it did come at the cost of others in the world.

Instead, we should work to make something better. Something that the more-distant future will have these same conversations about. Instill the idea that better is always ahead, and the past can only ever be a benchmark.

@Skepticat Ahhh, life was such a breeze for little Nimarata.
@Skepticat There’s always a tweet…

@Skepticat

Oh, really? You've been married since you were 12 years old?
