Do liberals understand that by enforcing the rule of law in the face of overt, confessed-to federal crimes, they are destroying norms we don’t care about and unleashing a retaliatory abuse of the system that we were planning to do if we felt like it anyway?
@Popehat I think a certain former Secretary of State would call it a resumption of reataliatory abuse of the system, but your point is well taken.
@Popehat mos of this telegraphing is directed at "independents", people, who might not like what GOP is doing, but are worried about liberals and leftists because they are seen as a threat. Nothing more, nothing less. They don't have to believe what they are saying. They are a cult. They will fall in line if needed to, no questions asked. Laws are against them? Laws are unjust, deep state, ecetera. Laws are helping us? We are lawful, everyone else is anarchist.
Goals are important.
@Popehat trying to even engage with what they are saying is just playing their game.
For them, end goal justify all means. That's what fascism is in nutshell. Every tool is valid. Justice, rule of law means absolutely nothing. Just a nuance to get over with with time.
@peteriskrisjanis The Donald was a Democrat in the early 2000s. Maybe he still is, a sleeper to get the GOP to unmask themselves. There is no longer any doubt as to what they stand for!
And surely no-one is such a perfect example of cartoon villain and village idiot.
@Popehat One of the main tenets of trumpism is accuse your opposition of the thing you've done or intend to do.
@Popehat Every accusation is a confession.
@Popehat Remind me again how that e-mail lady thing went. I seem to remember every non-RWNJ ducking away from asking questions and just assuming the worst when in the end there were some 3 e/ms with classified markings, all meeting schedules sent to her by third parties that were declassified by default the moment the meeting happened? Some rule of law they enforced that time.
@TonChryso @Popehat “0” classified. The “C” in the subject line was an error by the senders who thought it meant “Confidential”. Every elected official knew that, and the Republicans played it like a broken record just to smear her. Comey just had to get his sticky fingers into it and nail the lid shut while voting was happening.
@Catawu @Popehat Thanks for the clarification. Funny how none of the usual media outlets ever ran with that story. I’m sure I’d remember if I had read that.
@TonChryso @Popehat It didn’t serve their purposes. I saw it once. You can google it though. And know for a fact that despite what they say, all major media is invested in carrying water for the Fascist party

@Popehat “If you make me obey this “Go Directly to Jail” card I’ll take $500 from the bank next time I pass Go.”

“You do that anyway and threaten to physically beat me if I do it!”

@Popehat And we’ll happily launder some Russian disinformation to do it

@Popehat

It’s a challenge separating satire from truth these days…

@andrewsalter @Popehat Is this from NYTPitchbot? (I know it's not, but seriously, for crying out loud...)
@andrewsalter @Popehat Has anyone checked on how it’s impacting Hilary?
@andrewsalter @Popehat I am very tired of the word unprecedented.

@andrewsalter

I’m just happy to see that they’re trying different versions of, “Trump indicted again. Let’s explore how this is bad news for Biden and the Democrats.”

@andrewsalter @Popehat. "“It sets our country up for a bizarre moment, with a sitting president trying to put an ex-president in jail,” Brinkley said. “It’s super tricky. … It is a very fine dance that Biden has to do." NO, the sitting president isn't trying to do this. #WashingtonPost, if you offer a quote like this, please correct the disinformation in it. #media, for the love of god, please do better. No one is above the law. If he ends u p sitting in jail it's b/c of his acts, not Biden's.

@andrewsalter @Popehat

It's true!

President Joe Biden was laughing so hard, he missed the Amtrak stop in Scranton.

@andrewsalter @Popehat Such a brain dead piece, with "historian Douglas Brinkley" delivering authoritative platitudes. Nobody involved in that piece gave it more than 3 minutes thought, but they managed a "both sides." One guy is indicted for multiple felonies, the other guy is in a perilous position as a result."

@andrewsalter @Popehat

Amazing. This would be funny if it wasn't actively helping destroy Democracy.

@andrewsalter @Popehat Hey WaPo: "Republicans are lying, deflecting and projecting their crimes on their Democratic opponent to distract from their malfeasance and criminality" is not even a tiny bit unprecendented, but thanks for playing.
@andrewsalter @Popehat Oh fuck it's real! Matt viser is now on my fuckwit journalist list.
@Popehat I suspect you are going to get a lot of kickback by people that cannot recognize snark.

@Popehat

“Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit:

There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind,
alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

There is nothing more or else to it,
and there never has been."

The travesty of liberalism — Crooked Timber

@Popehat right?

Now we're going to throw a tantrum on top of the decade-long tantrum we're already in the middle of, because you're actually enforcing the laws that we claim we unabashedly support with all our hearts.

We're not playing nice already, but now we're REALLY not going to play nice and we're threatening to break even more laws in retaliation for you following the laws we say we support!

Liberals are so unhinged and on a witch hunt!

@Popehat I do. Alina Habba explained it to me over drinks the other evening...
@Popehat My favorite Easter egg detail in the Mar A Lago indictment is that even Trump’s lackeys at think he is an unwell, obsessed hoarder.
@Popehat “there must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside groups who the law binds but does not protect.” —Frank Wilhoit (no, not that Frank Wilhoit, this one: https://slate.com/business/2022/06/wilhoits-law-conservatives-frank-wilhoit.html)
The Pithiest Critique of Modern Conservatism Keeps Getting Credited to the Wrong Man

“Wilhoit’s Law” was coined by a different Frank Wilhoit.

Slate

@Popehat

"How confessing to selling critical national secrets to the Saudis is a savvy move that will propel Trump past DeSantis and into the White House. Join us as we explore this on our exclusive interview with 4 white boomers wearing 'blacks for Trump' shirts on our non-stop coverage of Trump's next rally. Only on CNN."

@Popehat the always relevant Wilhoit's law:
“Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."
@MattFerrel That's a fun and cathartic dig at conservatism and a built-in danger of it, but too reductive to be helpful for anything other than schizmogenesis. @Popehat

@Popehat They do! and then swallow it as a misguided point of pride.

They'd gladly let this ship sink before changing their ways.

@Popehat

I think the sarcastic response to this sarcasm is: "Well, duh."

@Popehat I had to reread this, but, yes, it's brilliant.
@Popehat had to read this a couple of times to understand your point…must be an age thing, mine.
@Popehat What exactly is your point?
@Craigrb If you have difficult following sarcasm this might not be the universe for you.
@Popehat It's right there in the Good Book: the meek shall inherit what's left of the Earth.
@Popehat — nice, snarky “there, I’ve fixed it” to WSJ editorial’s synopsis.

@Popehat Some are now saying it's impossible and that "he's done," BUT...if Trump gets re-elected, lots of norms will be on the chopping block. One of those norms is the rule of law itself.

The 25th Amendment provides that the Cabinet may deem the president “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office,” and thus remove him. That would have to be done ASAP.

@Popehat don’t quite see where you’re going.
@dikfraser it's satire of the position 'if we prosecute Trump the Republicans will use it as an excuse to prosecute Democratic candidates in the future'
@Popehat I'll ask at the next Constitution Burn
