#PhilippaOfClarence inherited #ClareCastle in Suffolk, with its gardens laid out by her stylish great-grandmother Elizabeth de Burgh, #LadyOfClare. She also inherited #Usk, & it was among those title deeds that her husband's Mortimer family preserved a transcription of Elizabeth's furious indictment of tyranny, dictated in secret in 1326 & rediscovered in the 1950s. She had 4 children by age 21, & died not long after: her descendants include the #HouseOfYork. 🧵 3/

#PhilippaOfLancaster, eldest daughter of #JohnOfGaunt, is remembered as a devoted wife, mother, & Queen of #Portugal. She was buried in the monastery at #Batalha, founded by her husband King João I in thanks for victory there, & they were later reinterred together in a magnificent joint tomb. This reign was the beginning of Portugal’s rise to prosperity & global influence, their children renowned as the #IllustriousGeneration.

#JohnOfGaunt & his 2nd wife Costanza (Constance) gave up her claim to the throne of #Castile when their daughter Catherine married the heir to King Juan. She was 15; her husband Enrique was 9. Two years later the king died after falling from his horse & she became Queen Catalina, acting as regent during the minority of Enrique. When Enrique died leaving a 1yr-old heir, she was regent for their son. 🧵 6/

The father & husband of #MarieDeCoucy were both captured at the #BattleOfNicopolis & died in subsequent plague outbreaks: Enguerrand in prison, Henri on the way home after ransom. Marie inherited vast estates, including the mighty #castle of #Coucy, then spent years in land disputes with her stepmother & sisters as well as powerful outsiders. #PhilippaDeCoucy was married in childhood to #RobertDeVere, who became notorious for an 'obscene familiarity' with #RichardII & then for abducting a lady-in-waiting of the Queen: Robert's mother #MaudUfford invited Philippa to live with her at #GreatBentley. #ConstanceOfYork was pregnant with her 3rd child when her husband was beheaded by a Bristol mob after participating in the #EpiphanyRising of 1400; she later bore an illegitimate daughter to the Earl of Kent. After she declared the teenage Edmund Mortimer to be the true king & arranged for the Mortimer boys to be abducted from #WindsorCastle, her cousin #HenryIV confiscated her assets & confined her to #KenilworthCastle - but only temporarily. 🧵 9/

When #AnneOfGloucester arrived he rode over to #Pleshey, bestowed lavish gifts, & tipped the 'rokestare' who rocked the baby in her cradle.
