The #AngloPortugueseAlliance was invoked during World War II, & reiterated in the Bilateral Declaration of 2022, with more celebrations planned in 2023. It is said to be the world's longest-lasting peace treaty - & it got off to a good start when a young woman far from home made a success of her arranged marriage. 🧵 14/14

Thinking about #MedievalWomen also casts new light on the men. #JohnOfGaunt gave generous tips to messengers bringing news of his brother's babies, & not only for the firstborn son. When #AnneOfGloucester arrived he rode over to #Pleshey, bestowed lavish gifts, & tipped the 'rokestare' who rocked the baby in her cradle.
@ANDictionary notes this use of an old English word in the Anglo-Norman context of Gaunt's register: https://www.anglo-norman.net/entry/rokestare 🧵 12/

@ANDictionary Thanks for checking! FWIW my new post on #AnneOfGloucester focuses on the other end of her life, at https://h-net.social/@ClaireFromClare/109930112538205271 - but I am still chuckling at the unlikely juxtaposition of #JohnOfGaunt, baby and #rockstar.

The 16 children of #JoanBeaufort included 3 duchesses, 1 earl, 1 countess, 3 barons, 1 baroness, 1 bishop & a nun; grandchildren later included #WarwickTheKingmaker & 2 kings. Joan had been born illegitimate. Despite a lifesize memorial in #Staindrop alongside her husband #RalphNeville, she chose to be buried in #LincolnCathedral with her mother #KatherineSwynford, long-term mistress & eventually wife of #JohnOfGaunt. 🧵 11/

#rocker & #rockstar, most apt! 🤣
I’m curious which baby #JohnOfGaunt would have been celebrating in 1382, or paying for care? since now writing a thread about #GranddaughtersOfEdwardIII. #KathrynWarner mentions cash gifts to the nurse & squire who brought news of a son born to his brother #ThomasOfWoodstock & #EleanorDeBohun, but, “fille” - so maybe another baby in the household?
#JohnOfGaunt & his 2nd wife Costanza (Constance) gave up her claim to the throne of #Castile when their daughter Catherine married the heir to King Juan. She was 15; her husband Enrique was 9. Two years later the king died after falling from his horse & she became Queen Catalina, acting as regent during the minority of Enrique. When Enrique died leaving a 1yr-old heir, she was regent for their son. 🧵 6/

An arranged marriage to a younger boy was unconsummated when #JohnOfGaunt arranged a hasty annulment so that his 2nd daughter #ElizabethOfLancaster - already pregnant? - could marry the hot-tempered warrior #JohnHolland. Between overseas trips & crises they equipped #Dartington with a #jousting arena & magnificent Great Hall. Within months of his beheading she married another skilled jouster, briefly imprisoned by her brother #HenryIV... 🧵 5/

#PhilippaOfLancaster, eldest daughter of #JohnOfGaunt, is remembered as a devoted wife, mother, & Queen of #Portugal. She was buried in the monastery at #Batalha, founded by her husband King João I in thanks for victory there, & they were later reinterred together in a magnificent joint tomb. This reign was the beginning of Portugal’s rise to prosperity & global influence, their children renowned as the #IllustriousGeneration.

The name Philippa has been popular in England since the #14thCentury when Philippa of Hainault arrived to marry the young king Edward III. Three of their first four granddaughters were named #Philippa: daughters of Lionel of Antwerp, John of Gaunt, & their sister Isabella of Woodstock. 🧵 2/
