Please stop planning conferences, workshops, and events in states where pregnant people cannot safely travel
@m_scribe Plus, if organizations are not able to shift preplanned #conferences etc, then they need to ensure that they have in place a virtual component. All such #meetings need to be hybrid
@VerranDeborah Agreed! Though I think all conferences should have a virtual component in general for accessibility reasons
@m_scribe women in the US now live under GOPTaliban Sharia Law rule . It is more like Handmaid's Tale everyday Now pregnancy makes us fugitives.
@MJmusicinears Actually, Islamic teachings on abortions are quite varied!

@m_scribe

Definitely boycott if your association or professional society insists. They will claim they are not being political, but all support for these extremists is political
#BoycottFlorida

@m_scribe we mentioned this to #ATS American Thoracic Society and we were shown the contracts that are in place for the next five years. One year in an antiwoman state but only one and there was a fairly enormous cancelation fee which they won't pay and can't reschedule anyway. So the org is taking a hit in attendance that year but they acknowledged the problem and won't schedule there again if those laws stay in place (we are told).
#OrgsThatTry #FeetToTheFire #prochoice #NazisRaus
@m_scribe so if you have a miscarriage in Texas at a trade show, you may be arrested for murder. Good point.

@edmaxwell @m_scribe

Yup!

I have a list of states that, as a woman, I will not be treated as a person and would be open season on my child. I will never step foot in/spend money in those states.

@m_scribe same, for trans and queer people, and for disabled people who cannot afford to catch covid

@m_scribe

Another suggestion:

If a woman is pregnant, do not plan to vacation in a State who has restrictions on abortions AKA: Medical care.

It's sad that women even have to think about this now but it's a reality.

@MiaLis79 @m_scribe Welcome to Michigan, where our governor, AG, and secretary of state are women, where the state's citizens embedded reproductive rights in the state's constitution this past year.

We have great winter sports and lovely lakefronts for summer fun. We look forward to hosting your conferences and your vacations.

Michigan Proposal 3 supporting abortion rights wins big | Bridge Michigan

With nearly 85 percent of the statewide vote in, support for Proposal 3, which would enshrine abortion rights in the Michigan Constitution, led 55.5 percent to 44.5 percent.

@femme_mal @m_scribe Proud or MI and happy for everyone who appreciates the positive changes being made to protect women & others!

We were actually looking into vacationing in MI this spring- I know the UP is nice but hard to find a place that is reasonably priced on water front. Any other suggestions?

@MiaLis79 Really have to book well in advance. VRBO would be one place I would check for listings, it's the site my cousin used for her place outside Marquette. Do try looking at some of the smaller inland lakes and not just the Great Lakes.

@femme_mal I was looking at VRBO in Muskegon but haven't found what I'd like.

Where are some nice smaller inland lakes? We only traveled thru UP once but Wow, so pretty.

@MiaLis79 I'd have looked near Sylvan Beach north of Muskegon and Norton Shores south of Muskegon. Try looking at an entire county at a time so you don't miss out locations just outside the target municipality.

Here's a list of nice inland lakes, but if you check by county you'll find popular lakes based on the number of rentals around them.

@femme_mal Thanks SO much, I'm going to check it out now!

@MiaLis79 @femme_mal @m_scribe

If you are looking for a nice beach with a small town flair check out Port Austin on Lake Huron right at the tip of Michigan’s thumb. Our entire extended family (60 some people) stayed at the Lake Vista Resort for a week last year and are returning in July. Quaint, clean & walkable to town which has several dining and bar options.

@Seith21 @MiaLis79 Not quite 3 hour drive from Detroit's DTW airport, 1.75 hours from MBS airport. I've stayed in the Caseville area to the southeast along Lake Huron's shore, another small town with many lakefront accommodations.

Sleeper State Park and a county park are located between Port Austin and Caseville. There are several golf courses within a 45-min drive as well.

I love plugging my state. :-)

@femme_mal @Seith21 Wow, many great suggestions. Thanks. I'm going to have to check these areas out later tonight. So many of you sent me info, you guys rock! Thanks again.
@Seith21 Thanks for suggestion, appreciate it !
@femme_mal @MiaLis79 @m_scribe Same with New Mexico, we also have great winter sports and beautiful scenery: https://www.governor.state.nm.us/2022/08/31/gov-lujan-grisham-signs-executive-order-expanding-access-to-reproductive-health-care-in-new-mexico/ Except for some nutjobs along the border with Texas, we're all reasonably sane!

@isotope239 @femme_mal @m_scribe

I want to thank EVERYONE for giving me great ideas RE: A possible vacay in MI & isotope239 for sharing fun info about visiting New Mexico too.

I have found that there are so many on #Mastodon who are willing to give very helpful advice, unlike the bird app & other apps I've used.

#Vacation spots with lakes or the #Ocean are always at the top of my list.

#throwbackthursday

@MiaLis79 @femme_mal @m_scribe Oh there's plenty of lakes around New Mexico: https://www.newmexico.org/things-to-do/outdoor-adventures/lakes-rivers/ I think Abiquiu is particularly nice and you're quite close to Santa Fe there. Maybe some white water rafting on the Rio Grande?

@m_scribe 👏 sick of cis men just wanting to go to the cheapest beach and totally disregarding the safety of their peers.

@m_scribe

People can grow accustomed to strange things. Test it. I once tried to survive using only other people's ideas & paths...no money...no friends...no car...

I ended up babbling to myself in the streets filthy and shoeless...then I thought...ok...this is enough.

@m_scribe gonna need to start adding trans people, too.
@m_scribe I'm interested in learning more. Are you referring to physical access issues, attitudes around public health, or something else completely different?
@menosec If pregnant people need health care -- for miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, preterm delivery, etc -- restrictions on reproductive health could endanger their lives. In some places, simply having a miscarriage can be suspect.
@m_scribe Thanks for the perspective, as you can tell, I missed it even with two guesses above. It's why I asked, I figured I had a blindspot.
Or, you know, anyone who might plausibly become pregnant or be mistaken for someone who could become pregnant and therefore be denied necessary medical care because of the theoretical impact such medical care could have on the real or imaginary fetus.
@m_scribe sadly that would mean no conferences in my own state 😢
@m_scribe @Incognitim
Yes, this!!! Why aren't people thinking?!
@noondlyt @m_scribe
💯💯💯. Not only are they *putting people's lives in danger*, they're also providing indirect financial support to the governments responsible for doing so!
100%!!!! This post-Roe era impacts all of us. I’d love to see organizers take a stand like this, for the safety of their attendees.
@m_scribe or gays, or people of color, or journalists, or…
@m_scribe I completely agree. Please bear in mind that conference organizers are currently planning where their 2027 events will be; their 2023 events were likely scheduled in a pre-Roe era. Not that that helps much for marginalized people in 2023, just try to have empathy for the people trying to set this all up. Stay safe.

@m_scribe

and cut people in the south off from everything?

southern organizers organize in the south. and we need to do those things too.

@m_scribe @cocoadog what states are not safe for a pregnant person? This does not compute for me…

@joe @m_scribe @cocoadog
It doesn't compute for a lot of men quite frankly.
States with heartbeat bills.
Here's one article for you.

https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/abortion-ban-exceptions-life-threatening-pregnancy-rcna36026

What overturning of Roe v. Wade means for life-threatening pregnancies that may be exceptions to abortion bans

New abortion bans enacted after Roe v. Wade was overturned make exceptions when the mother’s life is at stake. But doctors are unsure which threats qualify.

NBC News
@m_scribe More attention should be paid to this and all of the fallout post-Roe. I think if the media focused more on this and less on Ticketmaster (for example) a lot of people would be stunned.
@m_scribe This puts Blue City in Red State conferences like St. Louis' Strange Loop in a bind. STL overwhelmingly oppose the state's ban, and the conference has brought some badly needed attention and commerce to an economically depressed region. But at awful expense of helping normalize the state legislature's fatal bigotry. (STL, like many cities, is also badly exploited economically in other ways by the state government. Its agency to fully divest from the state is sharply limited.)
@westbywest It's not just a normalization of a state's policies. It's simply not safe for pregnant people to travel to certain places, and event planners must be thinking about accommodations that won't harm their careers and opportunities
@m_scribe and without covid safety requirements!
Somewhat bizarre to read this from across the pond.
