There was yet another Twitter API policy change last night: “good" bots may have light write-only API access.

This was instigated by, checks notes, someone Tweeting a picture of their cat.

I wish I was clever enough to make this stuff up…

@paul

I hope he comes back tweetbot 🥲

@paul Maybe an account that posts 420 at 4:20am & 4:20pm would do well. Maybe even from different time zones.
@paul to be fair: A very cute cat with a long history on Twitter. But still 🤦‍♂️
@paul You could write a Black Mirror episode about all this, except that it wouldn’t be believable.
@paul Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn’t.

@paul It’s almost as if someone was like “OH NO…if we don’t have content then there is nothing for people to actually consume!”

@paul

We are on the strange timeline, methinks.

@paul Starting to* think that running a company on the whims of reactionary right-wing billionaire is a bad idea.

* Not actually just starting to

@paul Honestly I’m just running under the assumption that any announced change will be walked back in some way or completely abandoned shortly after it is stated.
@sladewatkins @paul my first thought on hearing official “No Free API Usage” policy is that They would be making exceptions, because that is an exercise of Royal Prerogative
@paul Who decides if you've been a good bot?
@mastodonmigration probably botsentinel and it’s as reliable as a weatherman with a blindfold and earplugs in
@NomadicNerd @mastodonmigration I like that ‘as reliable as a weatherman with a blindfold and earplugs in’.
@paul I don’t understand what the point of having an API is if they’re going to lock it down so restrictively.
@paul What the fuck does "good" even mean?! Someone seriously just needs to kill Twitter entirely already.
@remixman @paul He's going as fast as he can.

@paul I think that they'll just end up grandfathering current API users because A) they're always late or B) nobody knows how to do what Elon wants.

Every decision Twitter makes has been delayed or walked back in some way. I think this'll be the same.

@paul I guess this is for things like WordPress and tweet scheduling apps. The can’t see them cutting off all the millions of Wordpress blogs, including many big media brands.
@paul guessing crossposting bots from #Mastodon to #Twitter will not be considered good…
@paul “Good” bots was inevitable. Almost all Brands use third-party bots to automate their Tweets. That’s pretty much all that’s left on Twitter: Brands.
@radley It’s 2024, Twitter stumbles on it’s only users are a few far right bots who shout at each other and brands tweeting into the void.
@paul @mikec415 SO glad to be out of that place.
@gedeonm @paul he’s breaking everything that depends on Twitter.
@mikec415 @gedeonm @paul
Or alternatively:
"he's breaking everything that Twitter depends on."
@gedeonm we're still getting daily questions about when we're coming back. I feel bad because people miss us. But I don't feel bad about not missing Twitter 2.0.
@paul Yeah I think some people can’t grasp what actually took place when Musk pulled what he pulled. I don’t blame them really but the reality of the situation is akin to being in an abusive relationship. Even if we COULD come back at this point would we? No damned way.
@gedeonm that one would be a really tough decision for me. I'm not personally going back, I like it here better. But can’t honestly say if we got unsuspended that I wouldn't go back. I can't see me ever trusting them again, under current management.
@paul @gedeonm How many percentage of the Tweetbot subs switched over to Ivory?
@jan @gedeonm it's not purely a financial decision, its more about supporting a bunch of people who won’t/can't leave Twitter for whatever reason but have been supporting us for 10+ years.
@paul @gedeonm it’s great here Paul. And totally agree, can’t trust #spacekaren one inch.
@gedeonm @paul
Musk (and many like him) think in programming term: if it doesn’t work, we’ll just revert the change and will be back to the initial state.
He doesn’t get that people don’t work like that and that reputation and trust don’t have an Undo.
@paul Tweetbot was a good bot… may it rest in peace

@paul I was joking to a friend last week that the API terms would get tweaked when the narcissistic asshole realized that accounts posting boob pics would go away.

So close.

@chockenberry @paul It also means the Elon fanbots can continue boosting his ego.
@chockenberry @paul Smh 🤦🏾‍♂️
This would be funny but too real.
@chockenberry I often wonder if the decisions are made based on what he’s smoking that day. Indica vs Sativa…
@paul @chockenberry it’s harder drugs than that
@paul @chockenberry more like weed vs meth

@covercash @paul @chockenberry Someone with the type of money he has isn’t doing meth. He’s doing “medical grade” cocaine.

Weed’s legal here in IL, I smoke a LOT of weed. Never once do I have the urge to change my life on a whim or destroy an infrastructure built by 1000’s. I also have no desire to shout out “420” into the void… He’s still wanting to live that college life.

@paul @chockenberry Alimony payment day or not. Which you think wouldn't be that often.
@paul @chockenberry he is a deeply unserious person who runs on pure impulse.

@chockenberry @paul I'm a big fan of this recent study from Sweden:

Extremely rich people are not extremely smart. Study in Sweden finds income is related to intelligence up to about the 90th percentile in income. Above that level, differences in income are not related to cognitive ability. https://academic.oup.com/esr/advance-article/doi/10.1093/esr/jcac076/7008955?login=false

@paul I wish they'd make a policy change about the insane CEO.
@paul now i'm curious about this cat that changed the course of internet history xd
@paul …you missed it. It’s one of those long standing API rules.
