Okay, perhaps I’m start to get the hang of this platform. These hashtags and the new connections they have generated is making my timeline a whole lot more interesting. Thanks tooters! (Note to self: watch for autocorrect when typing tooters!)
@FionaGrayPhD At least you can edit things here. :)
@timrichards see! I’m learning more stuff today! I didn’t know you can edit a toot. I’m thinking the Mastodon app is pretty shite because I can’t seem to do it. Will try on PC. What app do you use?
@FionaGrayPhD Toot, it’s a great one for iOS devices
@FionaGrayPhD , I hate autocorrect, I never use.
@FionaGrayPhD About half of those hashtags float my boat… hello! 👋🏼
@paul Great to connect then! Looking forward to tooting with you!

@FionaGrayPhD
Sounds good to me! Though I do tweet a fair amount of politics too ...

Just one thing - you post some lovely images, but do add #AltText if possible, to make them accessible to those who use screenreaders. A lot of people here (including me) won't boost images without it.

@ClaireCopperman Thanks for connecting Claire. And thanks for gently pointing out that I have been remiss in not using #AltText. I care less about boosts but do care about accessibility so have no real excuse for not having done that here. Will do so from here on. 😊
@ClaireCopperman And politics is A-okay by me! Now more than ever we must be politically engaged.
@FionaGrayPhD
Absolutely. I do understand that some people may use Mastodon as an escape from the ugliness of politics, but for me it's a way of connecting with like-minded people too. With the right-wing becoming ever more vocal on denial of the climate emergency as well as the denial of human rights, we need to soeak out!
@ClaireCopperman Just a question - I was using the metatext app for but was finding it clunky to use so have switched to the mastodon app which doesn’t seem to have the same #alttext functionality. I have just tried to toot a photo and had to manually add #alttext. Am I missing something or is this a limitation of the mastodon app?
@FionaGrayPhD
Hmmm ... I'm afraid I don't know much about the app; I'm still using web-based Mastodon in my browser, and adding #AltText is fairly straightforward. Maybe others can help?
@FionaGrayPhD
Just to add that many people find #Tusky better than the #Mastodon app. Or there may be an easier way of using alt text on the app ... On my browser, this is what I see when I upload an image; I just click on "no description added" and add #AltText there.

@FionaGrayPhD @ClaireCopperman I tried all of the (many) apps, and settled on toot (not to be confused with tooot).

Toot not only makes adding a description to images easy, you can use a setting which won't let you post a message until all images have a description!

It's also quite pretty, especially on tablet.

@Anderson @ClaireCopperman Thanks! I wondered whether to go with Toot or Tooot. Will install and give it a go. 😊
@Anderson @FionaGrayPhD
That's really helpful; thanks so much.

@ClaireCopperman @FionaGrayPhD Speaking personally, I do find that Mastodon tends to put the "social" back in social media.

And an edit function means that I apparently don't make typos any more …

@Anderson @FionaGrayPhD
Yes, that's a joy, isn't it? I was so happy when the recent update to my instance included that feature!

@FionaGrayPhD ok you got me on the #Architecture #kindness and #reading primarily.

🙃

@RealSolo lovely to meet you 😊
@FionaGrayPhD pleasure is all mine. 😇

@FionaGrayPhD I will note for the record my first PhD happens to be in #Architecture.

Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture, landscape and design.

It's not my career however.

@RealSolo okay, I’m in. Tell me more! First PhD - you mean you were bonkers/brave/committed/inspired/ enough to do it more than once?

@FionaGrayPhD currently hike two PhD working on third.

Also hold 2 Oscar nominations and hoping for the third and an actual win.

A member of Mensa. Tested by US and UK standards.

My bio should help a bit 🙃👋😇

@FionaGrayPhD I love most of these things! So I’m keen - I’m following the #slowliving instance so keeps me up to date in the timeline. Also, this instance #feditips will help to find tips and tricks to navigating the fediverse. Lots of newbies due to the great twitter migration. Enjoy!
@Marinekko Thanks for following and the tips. Look forward to getting to know you in the fediverse.
