It'd only take a handful of moderate Republicans to ward off the many crises planned by extremists in the House, from a government shutdown to a debt default to ending aid to Ukraine.

But that's the problem, as shown by the McCarthy deal ratified by the House GOP: there are zero moderate Republicans. They're all extremists. They prefer manufactured crises to stable governance.

@maxkennerly Symbolism over substance 😉

@maxkennerly The only path #McCarthy had was #VoterSuppression. The only path the @GOP has ever had is still #VoterSuppression

Their aim is to topple our government and our country.

@maxkennerly they don't care about stable governance because the chaos doesn't affect them, they're rich enough to survive any downsides for a long time
@revolcom @maxkennerly Wall Street owns a few. Has their peckers (and they are mostly male) in a safety deposit box. They will not be allowed to crash Wall Street. Strange bedfellows, but Big Capital is an ally for stability.
@JeanJaures @maxkennerly they're far more shortsighted than that tbh
@revolcom @maxkennerly Some are. Some may not be. We’ll see. In the end, the choice is surrender or fight. We must fight Republican economic and political terrorism.
@JeanJaures @maxkennerly they're far weaker than most of us realize, the gop is held hostage by a bunch of cognitively deficient people incapable of understanding the public doesn't like them. The gop has a bunch of moderate governers who could easily wipe any dem in the general election, But they're too radical and full of themselves to pick those winning candidates
@maxkennerly Do they exist? Moderates. A handful.

@maxkennerly
Republicans exist only as reactionary, anti-gov opposition. Just look at the absence of a 2020 platform. So, of course there are no centrist left.

#DemsGovernRepsPlunder

@TCatInReality @maxkennerly the brakes on a car only exist as a reactionary, anti forward propulsion opposition.

Imagine what we could accomplish by simply eliminating those!

@maxkennerly
In my opinion, there was an opportunity several days ago for McCarthy to work with the Democrats to pass a rule change to change the vote from majority to plurality thereby forcing the hard liners to get behind him or cede to Jeffries. That would have put a chill on the FC’s perceived power and sent a message that the House would not be governed by petulant toddlers. Instead, he gave into their tantrums and this not only enabled but guaranteed future tantrums will be worse.
@maxkennerly
I reject the term Moderate Republican. McCarthy is no moderate and voting for him is not moderate.
The GOP is dead.
@maxkennerly Moderate Republicans would have started asking for concessions after the first or second vote! I agree, there are no moderate Republicansin the House. They will try to make Biden’s next two years a nightmare, but add nothing positive to the life of 95% of Americans.
@maxkennerly
Hopefully Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is a strategic thinker who can exploit the GOP's disunity. 🤞😎🤞

@maxkennerly
However, republican and democrat elected officers along with Pres Biden BOOKED a tremendous amount of bills last year.

Thanks to Pres Biden's Working with small groups of BOTH groups accomplished a TON of work.

@maxkennerly

I think our only hope is arrest, conviction and imprisonment of several of the GOP Reps complicit in Jan 6

@maxkennerly Ds in the #House should formulate a plan to have #McCarthy 's back (votes) to neuter the Freedom Caucus and the worst promises made to them. This could be good for Ds, McCarthy, Rs, and most importantly, #America ! If #McCarthy is a true leader, that is! #Politics
@maxkennerly Maybe those 'moderates' do exist. But the current power balance drives them to opportunist inaction. That doesn't say very much for their personalities, but what happens when they realise they are on the way out anyway?
@maxkennerly Given the Speaker's agenda control I'm not sure a few moderates could change the calculus. McCarthy would also have to be willing to bring legislation to the floor that would result in motions to vacate. He would need Dems to side with those moderate Republicans to survive, and even then he'd have to deal with constant attacks from the right.
@maxkennerly Didn’t they lose their primaries or retire?
@maxkennerly
Easier for them to raise foreign cash from our enemies when the country is in disarray
@maxkennerly
GOP=Seditious White Nationalist Party
The GOP are enemies of the state, and the DNC is part of the 40+ year cesspool of variables that brought us to our perfect storm catalyzed constitutional crisis. (Although the Dem Party is far better than the soulless GOP, given how low the bar has fallen)
@maxkennerly It's the us and them mentality coupled with the It's All About Me mentality. Screw the people.
@maxkennerly I don’t know, there were a bunch of really close wins over Dems (like a couple of hundred votes) and a lot of close wins in districts Biden won. When push comes to shove, and Social Security checks are frozen and the market is crashing because of the uncertainty, you bet they will vote to approve raising the debt ceiling to avert a govt shut down, or that will be the end of their careers. This happens every time there is a GOP majority in the House, since the early 90s
@maxkennerly
~200 of them voted against certifying the election. The only stop would have been not allowing the literal insurrectionists to hold office. I mean MTG could still be the one who planted the pipe bombs.
@maxkennerly maybe! If they’re mad enough they will revolt. After all, #McCarthy most likely bargained away their coveted committee seats.
@maxkennerly
They didn't step up last night or any time in recent memory. What makes you think they will now that the worst of them hold the power and the blessing of don the con, the real speaker . McCarthy is a front
@maxkennerly the exciting part – that is a testable hypothesis. (And I get to watch from the other side of the world.)
@maxkennerly let’s hope they all spontaneously combust.
@maxkennerly they want the poor even poorer, the elderly extinct and the fragile among us broken.
@maxkennerly All the moderate Republicans are keeping their heads down. Yes, I think there are still some.

@maxkennerly "Republicans aren't doing what *I* think is important" => "Republicans are evil"

This is how a child thinks.

@maxkennerly

Classic situation where liberals always choose to align with fascists over socialists.

And democrats aren't even socialists.

(With expections, ofc.)

@maxkennerly Do you feel that it makes them think that they are accomplishing something by self inflicting wounds, or are the majority of the Republicans just plain stupid. Hey , I can answer this one myself. It's the latter part !
