Went back on Twitter after about three weeks off.

Strong dying mall vibes.

Scrolling felt like walk past magic eye poster kiosks and Hot Topic while smelling the weird miasma of Mrs. Fields plus Yankee Candle.

@klonick it's weird cause there was once upon a time a pretense of bureaucratic procedure in how the platform was managed, and that's been completely vitiated, just totally wiped away
@klonick i think I've been to that mall.
@klonick And the bathroom disinfectant - so foul.
@klonick some solid jokes about Kevin Mccarthy on there tho
@klonick love the analogy 😁
@klonick This feels accurate. The trouble with dying malls is that they can hang on for decades. And there's always one thing or another that you can only get there.
@klonick That’s funny. From the Mastodon side, I get the sense there are a lot of people who can’t or won’t leave Twitter, and at this point it is hard to imagine what would convince them to if the past two months haven’t.
@jtlg it is so stark. the engagement is less, it *feels* emptier, like going to Sears at 11 am on a Tuesday.
@jtlg also let's not forget that malls *still exist* despite having been dying for the last 20 years.
@klonick @jtlg Hometown mall was left desolated by a wal-mart but I was shocked to see it relatively full again when I visited over the holidays. It's been converted from the indoor hallways with department store anchor tenants layout to the big box strip mall format.

@klonick @jtlg
I agree. Twitter feels much less engaging to me now... hollow and empty. I've been wondering if there are others who feel similar.

I think it would be hard for me to go back full time at this point (ie as the main space where I engage socially online)

@jtlg @klonick okay, I guess I'll write my "threshold model of collective action" post about leaving Twitter after all <grin>

@jtlg @klonick yeah, I see a lot of people who are obviously cross-posting but only actively engaging on Twitter. (Plenty of real, organic activity “here” too, but … definitely not the same.) And even some pretty anti-Musk people, who seemed to be pretty credibly in “this is my last tweet mode” in December, actively returning to Twitter?

(I’m still dipping my toes in over there right now because the ML and politics discourse over there is still much thicker.)

@luis_in_brief @jtlg @klonick It’s much more hollow there, but here doesn’t have all of the same resonance that it used to there before (waves hand) all this.
@luis_in_brief @jtlg @klonick I don’t mind a cross post that is just a duplicate. I’m annoyed by the direct link to twitter.

@jtlg @klonick #Twitter fatigue will be a thing. It'll crash like Tesla stock. More good people should make the migration, it's a shame.

#Mastodon might just become booming.

@jtlg @klonick yup and it’s deeply depressing. People saying they’ll stay “to fight!” But that’s bullshit unless you’re also building up a new platform here.
@klonick dying mall, anchor stores hanging onto their many followers
While the mall manager continues treating the help like expendable low life

@klonick

If you want your account suspended ask Larry Ellison about his campaign donations to Jan 6 insurrectionists.

I think it's what got my account suspended yesterday afternoon.

@Npars01 @klonick

I've been suspended there. I suspect it was because I linked to some Washington Post articles suggesting that Musk is, um, flawed.

@Npars01 @klonick Wow. They didn't tell you why it was suspended? That would be so petty but not surprising considering how things are being run over there. Do you have a link to a source tying Larry Ellison to the Jan 6th insurrectionists?

@RedwoodGirl @klonick

I put a comment on my post including 3 links to publicly available reporting on Larry Ellison's campaign donations.

He's hardly keeping it a secret.

@RedwoodGirl @klonick

No warning or temporary suspension. No email or text regarding my account. Just a suspension.

Just to be clear, Larry Ellison has been public about funding election deniers.

At this time, there's little reporting on who funded the malign influence campaign behind Jan 6.

There's little reporting on who paid for busing, car rentals, burner phones, hotel reservations, airfare, meals, etc for the insurrectionists themselves.

Ginni Thomas paid for buses.

@RedwoodGirl @Npars01 @klonick No. in my case, there was a dialogue box informing me that in order to deactivate my account, I need to appeal my suspension first.🤷‍♀️
@Npars01 @klonick or, simply try to deactivate your account. While having this page 😎 Although others have experienced the same. I had to abandon ship. Just deleted the app.
@klonick OK, you scouted and reported to us, thank you ma’am, now you are given a liberty. Get out of that hellhole!
@klonick Oh, that's where the Houlihan's used to be.
@klonick oh I would SO go to Music+. “ believe in us, we’re music plus”
@klonick That "Going Out of Business Sale!" Sears that has only empty shelves and a couple of original "Space Jam" tank tops...
@klonick
Plenty of haters, scammers and peddlers there. Very little meaningful "free speech". It's starting to feel like MySpace...
@klonick Don't eat the candles. On the other hand, the cookies burn surprisingly well.
@klonick I found the perfect photo for this. Forest Acres Mall in Columbia, SC. It has been dead for years with 2 stores keeping it open.
@klonick Felt the same. Experience was a popular shuffle that could be 20+ hours old and no one I follow or retweeted.
@klonick Yeah the mall really lost its cool when they removed the news stands and allowed the neo nazi’s, and the fake doctors back in. Not my kind of party anymore.
@klonick feels a lot like when the last anchor store was a Corvettes that was picked over with just a few scraps left on the shelves.
@klonick
I went to high school with Mrs. Fields, nee Sivyer. She was a hottie.
@klonick Do they still have a functioning Cinnabon over there? The least they could do is make the place smell nice, even though you can see rats walking around unabashedly.
@klonick I took a year off and returned to Twit briefly last September. What struck me was the inanity. Couldn't believe I spent so many years immersed in that nonsense.
@klonick These days, I’m only dropping in for a Cinnabon.
@klonick don't forget the GNC quack nutritional supplement stores!
@klonick All I see are, adds, tweeters with 100k followers and reporters. A lot of the personal connections are gone or silent.

@klonick

And the pretzel place. There's always a pretzel place.

@klonick I had the same reaction
@klonick @dandrezner On the bright side if you can smell Yankee Candle you haven’t got Covid.

@klonick

Now I want a chocolate chip cookie.

@klonick Wait till YouTubers start making the 'abandoned places' videos.
@klonick Sounds right. Tesla’s using a dying mall parking lot for its excess cars near my home. On the other side they’re actually filming Dawn of the Dead. All fitting.
@klonick popup Nazi Fashion booths everywhere
@klonick hanging on Twitter like Spencer gifts
